North Shore

250A Dundarave/Vancouver

  • Increased Saturday service from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

253 Caulfeild/Park Royal

  • Increased Sunday and holiday service to operate every hour, up from every two hours.

254 British Properties/Park Royal

  • Increased Sunday and holiday service to operate every hour, up from every two hours.

255 Dundarave/Capilano University

  • Increased weekday service to operate every 20 minutes, up from 30 minutes, from 7-9 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

Seasonal

28 Phibbs Exchange/Joyce Station (Seasonal)

  • Service between Phibbs Exchange and Capilano University is discontinued and will resume in September.

If you’re travelling between Phibbs Exchange and Capilano Univeristy, take the 239 Capilano/Park Royal.

130 Metrotown Station/Hastings/Kootenay/Phibbs Exchange (Seasonal)

  • Service between Phibbs Exchange and Capilano University is discontinued and will resume in September.

If you’re travelling between Phibbs Exchange and Capilano University, take the 239 Capilano University/Park Royal.

210 Upper Lynn Valley/Vancouver (Seasonal)

  • AM trips leaving Burrard Station operate at 6:20, 6:50, and 7:20 a.m. then every 15 minutes until 8:50 a.m. to better reflect seasonal ridership.

236 Grouse Mountain/Pemberton Heights/Lonsdale Quay (Seasonal)

We’re doubling service on the 236!

  • Weekday service runs approximately every 15 minutes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the summer to improve passenger connectivity with the SeaBus.

239 Park Royal/Lonsdale Quay/Phibbs Exchange/Capilano University

  • Capilano Open service to and from Capilano University during peak periods is discontinued and will resume in September.

258 UBC/West Vancouver

  • All trips will end after April 28, to coincide with the end of semester at UBC. Service will resume in September.

Travelling between West Vancouver and UBC? You can either take the 250 Vancouver/Dundarave or 257 Vancouver Express/Horseshoe Bay, transfer at Burrard at Georgia to catch the 44 UBC/Downtown.

Burnaby – Seasonal

25 Brentwood Station/UBC (Seasonal)

  • The 7:53 a.m., 7:56 a.m. and 8:05 a.m. trips arriving at Willington Ave/Canada Way are discontinued starting Monday, May 29, 2017 and will resume in September.

28 Capilano University/Phibbs Exchange/Joyce Station (Seasonal)

  • Service between Phibbs Exchange and Capilano University is discontinued and will resume in September.
  • Passengers can use the 239 as an alternative to travel to Capilano University.

Well, let’s just say if you live, work or take transit in and around New Westminster, this Bus Route Buzz is for you!

As a reminder, many of our Spring Service Changes bus improvements are made possible by the 10-Year Vision and part of a three-year roll out of bus expansion to reduce crowding, improve service frequency and capacity issues as well as expanding routes into underserviced areas.   • We’re adding more service during peak periods to reduce crowding and pass ups.

We’re increasing service to better meet the needs of our riders! Many will experience shorter wait times for buses and between transfer connections, as well as  less crowding on buses and reduced pass ups.

    • We’ve added additional service from 6-9 a.m.
  • Weekday PM peak improvements:
    • We’ve added additional service from 2:30-7 p.m.
  • Saturday improvements:

311 Scottsdale/Bridgeport Station

  • Improved weekday service to operate every 15 minutes, up from every 20 minutes, from 6-7 a.m.

301 Richmond Brighouse/Newton Exchange

  • Improve weekday service to operate every 15 minutes, up from 20 minutes, from 6-9 a.m. and 3-5 p.m.

401 Garden City/One Road

We’re improving service during the AM and PM peaks to provide a more reliable service to our customers. These changes will better match customer demand and reduce crowding and pass ups.

  • Improved and consistent morning service to every 8 minutes from 7-8:30 a.m., every 10 minutes between 8:30-9 a.m. and every 12 minutes from 9-9:30 a.m.
  • Improved and consistent afternoon service to operate every 8 minutes from 4-6 p.m. and every 12 minutes from 6-6:30 p.m.
  • Improved late night service to every 30 minutes from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m.

  • Last trip to UBC Loop is at 7:50 p.m. and the last trip from Bridgeport Station is at 7:01 p.m.

Regular service will resume in September.

601 South Delta/Boundary Bay/Bridgeport Station

  • Provides service every 20 minutes (up from 30 minutes) on the weekend between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • We’re increasing service to better match customer demand and reduce wait times for buses and transfer connections.

620 Tsawwassen Ferry/Bridgeport Station (Seasonal)

Additional trips to the Tsawwassen Ferry terminal are back!

Service increases to two buses every hour, up from one per hour, to coincide with the summer ferry schedule. Be sure to check the BC Ferries schedules!

  • Seasonal service runs from April 24th until September 4th (Labour Day – inclusive).

Regular service will start on September 5, 2017.

Today we’re taking a look at some of the changes coming to Tri-Cities routes plus a seasonal favourite returning for the highly anticipated summer weather!

There have been instances of overcrowding and pass ups on a few routes in the Tri-Cities since the opening of Evergreen Extension.

We have been monitoring these routes closely and taking your feedback via social media, feedback forms and community events very seriously. Thank you for being a part of the conversation and helping us deliver the best service possible!

Our planning department has assessed the issues and have made changes to better serve the riders of these areas.

153 Braid Station/Coquitlam Central Station

  • We’re adding more service during peak periods to reduce crowding and pass ups.
  • Service every 12-14 minutes from 6-9 a.m. and from 3-6 p.m.

180 Lougheed Station/Moody Centre Station

  • We heard you. We’re adding more service to improve mid-day travel and reduce crowding and pass ups.
  • Service runs every 15 minutes from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

182 Moody Centre Station/Belcarra

  • Improve weekday service to every 30 minutes, up from every 60 minutes, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Customers will have access to more mid-day trips with less wait times and crowding.

 184 Noons Creek/Moody Centre Station

  • We’ve added one additional westbound weekday trip to meet the 6:15 a.m. West Coast Express train at Moody Centre Station.

Seasonal Changes

150 White Pine Beach/Coquitlam Central Station

Travelling to White Pine Beach? Get your swim trunks ready because the 150 White Pine Beach/Coquitlam Central Station is back!

  • The 150 operates every 60 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • May 6-June 9: weekend and holiday service only.
  • June 10-Sept 4 (including Labour Day): daily service!
  • Customers will benefit from direct service to Coquitlam Station, Newport Village and White Pine Beach.

Bus Route Buzz – Spring Service Changes

In December, we introduced Bus Route Buzz to the blog; your one-stop-shop for bus service changes.

Service Changes are here again, just like clockwork, and so is Bus Route Buzz! In this series, we will continue to provide an in-depth look at maps, schedules and route changes as well as explainer videos with our in-house planning expert, #DenisThePlanner.

We have so many exciting changes this spring to increase frequency and efficiency across our bus network, particularly in Surrey, Langley, Richmond and the Tri-Cities.

These changes, additional service and added transit areas is have been made thanks to the funding secured for the 10-Year Vision.

You may have already had heard the news, but in case you missed it, the provincial government recently announced that they are matching the federal government’s $2.2 billion transit funding commitment dollar for dollar! This funding will improve and expand transit in Metro Vancouver. You can view the press release about the announcement here.

In the coming weeks, stay tuned to Bus Route Buzz right here on the Buzzer blog for a closer look at some of the changes coming to buses starting April 24.

Safety barriers are coming to CMBC buses

For TransLink, safety is a top priority for all people travelling on transit, including our bus operators.

Assaults on operators are unacceptable and can put the lives of our riders at risk.

After a two-year process of piloting various barrier designs, assessing effectiveness, collecting user feedback and modifying designs, we are now ready to equip our buses with bus safety barriers.

Safety barriers allow operators to do their job, getting you where you need to go efficiently and safely, while maintaining driving sightlines, communicating with riders and protecting themselves against attacks.

Other tools CMBC currently utilizes to keep staff safe include security cameras, GPS radio system, emergency button, Transit Security, Transit Police, Violent Incident Prevention training and campaigns like “Don’t touch the operator.”

Bus barriers by the numbers:

  • All future orders of new 40′ and 60′ buses will come with safety barrier already installed. Buses will start arriving by early 2018.
  • 208 air-conditioned New Flyer Excelsior buses will be retrofitted with safety barriers.
  • Six trolley buses will be retrofitted as part of the expanded pilot program.
  • Retrofit of 214 buses will be underway by the end of 2017 and completed within two years.
  • Within 10 years, about 75 per cent of the fleet will have safety barriers installed.

Design features:

  • Sliding front portion allows easy customer communication and controls glare.
  • Fixed solid portion means barrier prevents attacks from behind—even when the sliding portion is open.
  • Offers protection from assaults including jumping assailants, thrown objects, climbing over and spitting.

What does this mean for riders?

Nothing changes! The bus barriers don’t affect your commute at all.

You will still be able to talk to and communicate with your favourite bus operator!

World Water Day 2017

Today is World Water Day 2017!

This annual event is about taking action to tackle the world’s water crisis and this year’s theme is wastewater (aka as the water that runs down the drain and we aren’t actively using) and how we can utilize this resource.

At CMBC, water conservation and using wastewater is an important part of our operations.
DID YOU KNOW?!?
Starting in 2016, CMBC has committed to reduce bus washing by at least 50% each summer between June and the end of September!A bus in the car wash at Surrey Transit Centre.
Plus! Anytime Metro Vancouver introduces Stage 2 water restrictions, CMBC will voluntary stop all bus washing, except in special circumstances.
 
These changes yield BIG water savings! At Burnaby Transit Centre alone, suspending bus washing translates to saving up to 35,000 litres of water each day!

At all transit centres, we use recycled or “wastewater” for the wash and fresh water is used only for the final rinse.

These water recycling systems reduce the amount of water required to wash each bus by about 75 per cent!

UBC bus exchange changes are coming March 6, 2017

If you travel to or from UBC, you will probably have noticed that we’ve been doing a fair bit of construction to your bus loop (exchange).

That’s because we need to modify this area to allow for the construction of the future UBC Exchange and Gage South Student Residences.

To accommodate this work, your bus stop is changing!

As of March 6, 2017, buses will operate along Student Union Boulevard, University Boulevard and Wesbrook Mall.

Passengers will now be dropped off in the newly finished part of the new bus exchange – providing upgraded shelters and lighting!

**Please note** Stops in the former bus exchange will be discontinued.

The rest of the new exchange, along with the new residences, will open in summer 2019.

Better bus connections are coming for West Coast Express riders!

Attention all West Coast Express riders!

Some of the bus schedules that connect to the West Coast Express were changed on December 19 as part of our regular service changes.

Since that time, you’ve reached out by phone, email, Twitter and other channels to tell us that the changes to some routes made for tight connections between bus and West Coast Express.

We are listening and we’re making changes to reflect the feedback!

Starting Monday, January 30, 2017 the schedules of the following routes will change:

171 Fremont trips departing Coquitlam Central Station weekdays at 6:57 a.m. and 7:27 a.m. will now leave 2 minutes earlier at 6:55 a.m. and 3 minutes earlier at 7:24 a.m.

171 Coquitlam Central Station trips departing Fremont and Dominion weekdays at 7:20 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. will now leave 2 minutes earlier at 7:18 a.m. and 7:48 a.m.

172 Riverside trips departing Coquitlam Central Station weekdays at 6:54 a.m. and 7:24 a.m. will now leave 2 minutes earlier at 6:52 a.m. and 7:22 a.m.

172 Coquitlam Central Station trips departing Dominion and Fremont weekdays at 7:10 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. will now leave 2 minutes earlier at 7:08 a.m. and 3 minutes earlier at 7:37 a.m.

180 Moody Centre Station trips departing from Lougheed Station weekdays between 6:18 a.m. until 8:05 a.m. will now leave 2 minutes earlier.

180 Lougheed Station trips departing from Moody Centre Station weekdays between 5:42 a.m. until 7:32 a.m. will now leave 2 minutes earlier.

182 Moody Centre Station/Belcarra All weekday trip times have been adjusted to better reflect conditions and to connect with the West Coast Express.

184 Moody Centre Station trip departing from Panorama at Lansdowne weekdays at 6:20 a.m. will now leave 5 minutes earlier at 6:15 a.m.

185 Lansdowne trip departing Coquitlam Central Station weekdays at 6:05 a.m. will now leave 5 minutes earlier at 6:00 a.m.

In some cases the bus will arrive earlier than it does today so be sure to check Trip Planner or Bus Schedules for specific route schedules.

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with parades and events around Metro Vancouver

2017 is the year of the rooster

Cock-a-doodle-doo! It’s almost the year of the rooster in the lunar calendar.

The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival in China, is this Saturday, January 28 and there are lots of activities around the region to ring in this new year.

One of the bigger celebrations is in Richmond at the Aberdeen Centre which boasts the largest Chinese New Year celebration in North America and is easily accessed from the Canada Line!

The events at Aberdeen are already underway with the Chinese New Year Flower and gift fair. Next up is the countdown on Friday then the Golden Dragon and Lion dance on Saturday.

For more Chinese New Year fun, head to Lonsdale Quay on the North Shore, a special Chinese New Year dinner at the Cloverdale Rec Centre in Surrey or check out FlyOver Canada’s special showing of Flight of the Dragon at Canada Place until February 26.

Another popular celebration is the 44th Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival Parade at 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 29.

Bus stop changes at 29th Avenue Station

 

Phase one bus stop moves

Route 16 and 33 bus stops will temporarily move as of January 24.

TransLink will be upgrading the 29th Avenue Station Exchange to improve customer access, safety and security.

During this upgrade work, temporary traffic patterns and bus stop location changes will occur.

Until mid-February, the regular stops for the 16 and 33 buses will be moved outside the bus loop.

The number 16 bus bay has been relocated to north side of 29th Avenue.

The number 33 bus bay has been relocated to south side of 29th Avenue.

The upgrades for this exchange will include:

  • A new bus bay to allow all buses to pick up and drop off within the bus loop.
  • Improved lighting, glass shelters and lower profile landscaping to make the bus loop more visible and safer.
  • Three new crosswalks to improve safety and access tot he bus loop and station.
  • New bus stop ID poles with braille and tactile strips to meet accessibility standards and better direct customers.

The entire project is set to wrap up Summer 2017.

(Video) TransLink launches Phase One of the 10-year Vision with more SkyTrain and SeaBus service

Today is a great day because it marks the beginning of more transit for our region!

More transit means expanded region-wide bus and HandyDART services, improvements to major roads to reduce congestion and address bottlenecks plus more SkyTrain and SeaBus to reduce wait times and overcrowding.

These services will be rolled out this year as part of Phase One of the 10-Year Vision for Metro Vancouver Transportation.

“Metro Vancouver’s public transportation system is finally turning a corner after nearly a decade without significant region-wide investment in transit services,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “With completion of the Evergreen Extension in December, and this week’s launch of the first transit enhancements included in the 10-Year Vision, Metro Vancouver is starting to see the long-overdue transportation improvements that will get our region moving again.”

What’s new

  • SkyTrain
    • On weekdays – peak service will end 15 minutes later in the morning and last one hour longer in the afternoon and evening rush.
    • On weekends – trains will increase to match weekday off-peak frequency meaning trains will run every 3 to 6 minutes.
  • Canada Line
    • More frequent service during weekday peak hours.
    • 11 per cent increase in passenger capacity during the busiest periods – that means an extra 3,700 passengers in each direction every weekday.
  • Bus and HandyDART
    • 10 per cent increase in bus service.
    • 15 per cent increase for HandyDART meaning 85,000 more available trips annually.
  • SeaBus
    • Doubling SeaBus Service on Sundays and holidays to sailings every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

What’s next

In the coming weeks and months, more improvements of Phase One will be rolled out, including:

  • New or expanded transit services for neighbourhoods that currently have few – or no – transit options today;
  • Safer walking and cycling routes; and
  • Improvements to the Major Road Network.

Meet Denis. Denis the planner.

Haaaaaaaaave you met Denis?

Denis has been with TransLink for three and half years and in the planning department for the past two and half.

When the Evergreen Extension opened, that meant a lot of bus route changes and Denis offered to help us explain a little more about some of the route modifications to our riders who reached out on Twitter.

These responses have been so successful that Denis has agreed to be our “go-to” planning guru across our social channels!

With Denis’ help, this will allow us to delve deeper into service changes and explain more about specific routes and modifications to service.

Not only does Denis help plan things like your favourite bus route, he’s also a transit fan, transit rider as well as a cycling enthusiast. Let’s get to know “Denis the Planner” a little better!

Why did you choose planning as a career?

I originally got into planning because I was concerned about big issues like climate change, preserving farmland, and health. Buuuuttt also I love maps and I love cities. Planning allows me to address those big societal issues AND spend my time working with maps and cities. It’s great!

What drew you to transit planning in particular?

I want to make transit (and walking and cycling) attractive to more people for all of the big reasons mentioned above. This would be a really straightforward job if we had the ability to just put buses everywhere. But, since we can’t just put buses everywhere, we have to have conversations about where those buses should go. And these are really interesting, challenging conversations!

What’s the best part of your job?

The most exciting part is early in the planning process when we get to have blue-sky conversations about different designs for the transit network. It’s a cross between art and science because you need to be creative, but your ideas also have to be based on real data!

What is the most difficult part of your job?

Saying no! I love transit and I want everyone to have great transit access! Until someone invents a money tree, it’s not going to be possible to run a bus to everyone’s doorstep. A big part of my job is explaining the tough transit trade-offs, and that we’re trying to provide the best possible service to the region with the resources we have.

What are your favourite modes transportation besides transit?

I don’t own a car but I recently got an electric bike and I love it! I feel like I can go anywhere on it! Hills are no match for me now.

Why did you want to be #Denistheplanner and personally respond to people’s concerns about service changes?

I’m excited to tell the story of transit. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes and I want to help people know more about that stuff! We’ve always answered tweets and messages; but videos are just more fun, and so hopefully more people will see them!

What do you hope to achieve by being able to directly respond to our riders?

I would love to convert everyone into a transit nerd. If we get more people thinking about transit, hopefully that will mean more public participation, and ultimately better transit!

Vancouver Technical Secondary students warm hearts and bellies of bus operators!

Not even the Grinch could keep Vancouver Technical Secondary Students from warming the hearts, and bellies, of our bus operators on the last day of school before the holiday break!

For 20 years now, VanTech students have been braving the rain, the snow, and this year, the extreme cold to show their appreciation for our bus operators.

Students arrive at the crack of dawn outside the bus stop in front of their school to set up their beverage station.

Bus operators are greeted with a smiling face and a carol or two, a hot chocolate and a small token of students appreciation.

There may have been a chill in the air, but the enthusiastic holiday cheer was truly heartwarming.

A very special thank you to all off the Vancouver Technical Secondary students who took part and helped to make this another wonderful event and for treating our bus operators to some holiday cheer!
