Running Rail Replacement work May 25–May 30, 2017

We are continuing with our work to replace 7,000 aging rail pads and 5,000 linear metres of running rail on the Expo Line.

This phase of the Running Rail Replacement Project began this February and will continue through summer 2017.

This batch of work will include single tracking later in some evenings as well as some morning and afternoon work on the weekend.

On May 27 and May 28, two sections of track west of Main Street–Science World Station will require extended times to accommodate the necessary special treatment to pre-bend the 60 foot rail sections before installation.

Please take note of the schedules below and know before you go!

Thursday May 25 & Friday May 26

  • From 9:30 pm until the end of service

Saturday May 27

  • From start of service until 2:00 pm AND
  • From 11:30 pm until the end of service.

Sunday May 28

  • From start of service until 3:00 pm.
  • There will be no single tracking Sunday evening.

Monday May 29 & Tuesday May 30

  • From 9:30 pm until the end of service.

For all affected service days:

  • Expo Line trains will use one track in both directions at Main Street–Science World and Commercial–Broadway stations.
  • Expo Line passengers should allow for 15-20 minutes extra travel time.
  • All Expo Line trains will operate between Waterfront and King George stations.
  • Expo service to Sapperton, Braid, Lougheed Town Centre and Production Way–University will be replaced with trains operating between New Westminster and VCC–Clark. Passengers from other stations on the Expo Line can change trains to this service at Commercial–Broadway, New Westminster and Columbia stations.
  • Millennium Line and Canada Line will operate normally.

This work schedule is subject to change.

Experience your own ‘art on transit’ Jane’s Walk

The festivities and walking tours associated with the worldwide Jane’s Walk are over for another year, but that doesn’t mean we should stop discovering our communities!

With that in mind, we’d like to share the walk and talk that TransLink’s Debra Rolfe lead during the festival.

Below is a step-by-step guide to art found on and around the Expo Line with a few stops in Vancouver and New Westminster.

Stadium–Chinatown

Alinka Echeverría’s Precession of the Feminine

Located on the unused platform at the station, and visible from the main platform or from eastbound trains, temporary project 2017-18

This artwork is part of the Capture Photography Festival, a non-profit annual festival devoted to exhibiting local and international photography. Alinka Echeverría’s Precession of the Feminine is a series of three-dimensional simulations of ceramic vases fused with archival photographs of women and presented against vibrantly coloured backdrops. Echeverría shows her viewers the process behind the creation of these images in order to invite them to look at the unconscious beliefs we bring to viewing photographs, particularly of women. Within the transit context, this project demonstrates one of the goals of TransLink’s public art program to surprise and delight customers, with the layers of meaning in this artwork manifesting differently whether customers pass through the station only once or whether they pass through the station daily.

Main Street–Science World

The Watch Seller is a bronze sculpture of a watch seller that functions like a deconstructed public clock. Covered in 720 watch faces, the Watch Seller has every possible minute of a 12-hour analogue clock visible on his figure. He is always out of time, but he also always shows the correct time. These aspects of the artwork reference the shared history of train travel and standardized time, which were invented together in the 19th century. Indeed, standardized time was once called ‘railway time’ and public clocks are a ubiquitous feature of old railway stations. Set at the pedestrian level right outside the station entrance and across Thornton Park from Pacific Central Station, the Watch Seller is the size of a real person. It invites interaction and engagement with the station and the history of rail travel.

Commercial–Broadway

Intersections mural on Broadway and inside the south stationhouse, temporary project 2015-18

This series of murals was commissioned in order to improve the experience of the station during renovation and reduce graffiti on the construction hoardings. It was a partnership with the City of Vancouver’s Integrated Graffiti Management Program. Due to the complex nature of the construction process at this station and the expectation that we would have to move the construction hoarding around over time, we asked the artists to create a series of small murals that could be displayed together or separately. Although the artists all worked together and worked with a shared theme and colour palate, they each led on a 12×8 foot section of the mural. The mural’s name and the motif of the SkyTrain windows repeating throughout remind us of the nature of Commercial-Broadway Station as a place of meeting and of departure.

Joyce–Collingwood

Found on Vanness Avenue, outside the east station house, temporary project 2016-17

This project was a partnership with the City of Vancouver’s Integrated Graffiti Management Program and the Collingwood Neighbourhood House. The artists worked with youth who are newcomers to Canada, including Syrian refugee youth, to develop designs related to the concept of home. Individual children produced drawings that the artists then integrated into the overall design. The word ‘home’ in blue, like a river, binds the entire mural together.

New Westminster Station

The mural at New Westminster Station is a collage of archival photographs of New Westminster and elsewhere in BC overlaid with brightly coloured shapes. The flow of images in the artwork references the nearby Fraser River and, as the artist has described it, ‘the simple paradox that [the river] is an ever-changing yet constant presence’. The artwork examines the history of New Westminster and British Columbia as one in which ‘nature’ is transformed into ‘resources’ and how an economy, political power and culture develops from that process. It also brings a beautiful stream of multi-coloured light and images into the station, whereas before the view from this staircase was of the concrete wall next door.

More station upgrade progress at Joyce–Collingwood!

Joyce–Collingwood Station is looking more refreshed by the day as work continues on upgrading our fourth busiest Expo Line station outside of downtown Vancouver.

These upgrades seek to improve safety and security for riders as well as accessibility to the station.

Completed work

  • Escalator installation work is complete.
  • Timber ceiling installation in the new east stationhouse is now complete.
  • New lighting on the platform improves safety and security.
  • Bus shelter footings are now installed. Look for two new bus shelters at the station later this summer!
  • Newly installed glass panels improve visibility on the platform.

What’s next?

  • Elevator testing and commissioning
  • Public art installation
  • Ceiling panel installation on the platform
  • Installation of glass walls for the east stationhouse
  • Bike Parkade work is ongoing and when complete, customers can access the parkade using their Compass Card.

The Running Rail Replacement Project continues with work that started on Sunday, April 30.

Fun fact!

As part of this project we have already replaced 6851 rail pads, and expect to install a total of almost 7000 rail pads by the end of the project.

May 7 to May 9 May 22 to May 24

Single tracking – when trains travel on the same track in alternating directions – will happen at Royal Oak and Edmonds stations from 9:30 p.m. until the end of service.

  • Expo Line trains will operate between Waterfront and King George stations, with additional trains until midnight between Waterfront and Metrotown
  • Expo service to Sapperton, Braid, Lougheed Town Centre and Production Way–University will be replaced with trains operating between New Westminster and VCC–Clark. Passengers from other stations on the Expo Line can change trains to this service at Commercial – Broadway, New Westminster and Columbia stations.

Take the SkyTrain survey, April 24–May 21, 2017

BCRTC (SkyTrain) has joined the Nova benchmarking group that is operated by the Imperial College in London.

This group is sister to the benchmarking bus group (IBBG) of which CMBC is a member. The purpose of these groups is to share experiences, compare performance, identify best practices and learn from one another in order to improve performance.

Much like the IBBG survey, this survey looks at overall customer satisfaction, service quality, performance and more!

2017 Vancouver Sun Run

On Sunday, April 23, over 40,000 people will lace up their runners to take part in Canada’s largest 10k road race, the Vancouver Sun Run.

Considering the size and scope of this race, lots of bus routes will be affected to clear the way for runners. This may affect your transit trip on Sunday, so make sure you know before you go!

Our alerts page has the full list of detours and route changes.

For runners and cheering squads, the Expo and Millennium lines will start service a half an hour earlier. Canada Line will run at its usual time at 5:02 a.m.

West Coast Express will run a special Sun Run train arriving at Waterfront Station at approximately 8:15 a.m. This train is expected to be quite busy, so please arrive at your station at least 20 minutes before your departure time. After the race, the train will leave Vancouver at 2:30 p.m.

SeaBus will begin running at 7 am running every 15 minutes until 6:30 pm, when it will return to a regular Sunday schedule.

Running Rail work continues near Metrotown Station on April 10 & 11, 2017

**UPDATE** Work has finished early on this phase of the Running Rail Replacement Project. There will be no modifications to service on Tuesday April 11th. 

The Running Rail Replacement Project marches on with work taking place on Monday, April 10 and Tuesday, April 11 near Metrotown Station.

The modified service for this work will similar to the current modified service, but the single tracking – when trains travel on the same track in alternating directions – will happen at Royal Oak and Edmonds stations.

Expo Line trains will operate between Waterfront to King George Station. Please be aware that during this work, there will be no Expo Line trains to Production Way–University.

There will be a shuttle train operating between New Westminster and VCC–Clark. You can change trains to this service at New Westminster and Columbia stations.

Surrey Central buses are on the move!

Calling all Surrey Central bus loop users!

Starting Monday, April 10, Bay 12 will temporarily close for construction of a new entrance at Surrey Central Station. As a result, the 502, C71 and C73 will change pick up and drop off locations.

What you need to know:

**Update May 11, 2017**

  • Stop move: The 502 Langley Centre/Surrey Central Station will move to Bay 6 (stop #55714) Bay 9.
  • Stop move: The 503 Aldergrove/Surrey Central Station will move to Bay 6
  • New stop: The C71 Surrey Central/Scott Road Station and the C73 Guildford/Surrey Central Station will move to a new drop off and pick up location at Bay 15 (stop #60153) in front of SFU on 102nd Avenue, or board at Bay 5A.
  • Stop move: The C71 and C73 will pick up SkyTrain passengers connecting to the bus at Bay 14 (stop #61787).

From 9:30pm until the end of service, Expo Line trains will be single tracking – when trains travel on the same track in alternating directions – between Main Street-Science World and Commercial-Broadway stations.

Expo Line trains will operate between Waterfront to King George Station. Please be aware that during this work, there will be no Expo Line trains to Production Way–University.

There will be a shuttle train operating between New Westminster and VCC–Clark. You can change trains to this service at New Westminster and Columbia stations.

Tips for a faster trip using Special SkyTrain Service

  • If you are travelling from downtown Vancouver and your destination is Sapperton, Braid, Lougheed Town Centre or Production Way–University stations, take an Expo Line train to Commercial–Broadway station and change trains to a VCC–Clark – New Westminster train operating from platform 2.
  • If you are travelling from Commercial–Broadway to Braid, Sapperton, Columbia or New Westminster stations, board a VCC–Clark – New Westminster train operating from platform 2.
  • If you are travelling from New Westminster Station to a destination along the Millennium Line, including Commercial–Broadway Station, take the New Westminster – VCC–Clark train.
  • If you are travelling from Surrey to a destination along the Millennium Line, including Commercial–Broadway Station, ride the Expo Line to Columbia and transfer to a New Westminster – VCC–Clark train.
  • If you are travelling on the Millennium Line Evergreen Extension to New Westminster Station or beyond, transfer at Lougheed Town Centre as you normally would and catch the VCC–Clark – New Westminster train from Platform 2 at Lougheed Town Centre. If required, change to the Expo Line at New Westminster to continue west.

Schedule Adjustments due to events

  • Sunday April 2: Service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30pm, to accommodate the Canucks hockey game.
  • Wednesday April 5: Service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30pm, to accommodate the Canucks hockey game.

Surrey Central is getting an upgrade!

Some of the busiest stations on the Expo Line are getting much needed upgrades and that includes Surrey Central Station; the busiest station in Surrey!

This bustling transit and community hub will be upgraded to meet the needs of the fast-growing municipality as well as our overall region, bringing more accessibility and create easier commutes for riders!

New features of the station include:

  • A new north stationhouse with two new entrances at the north side of the existing station to make it easier and more convenient for people to take SkyTrain.
  • Design elements such as improved lighting and glass walls to make the station safer and more secure.
  • Three new escalators and a new elevator to improve access for customers with disabilities and make it more convenient for all customers to access the platform easily.
  • New station design for the north stationhouse to better integrate with the surrounding community.
  • 920 square metres of extra space will help improve passenger flow through the station.

Don’t worry about connecting to the library, mall, Surrey City Hall and all the amenities around the station because access is not changing!

Customers will continue to use the existing exits and entrances to the station. However, those who previously used the emergency exit on the north side of the platform will exit from the south entrances as the emergency exit will be demolished as part of this project.

Work will begin this spring and is expected to be complete by the end of 2018.

Running Rail replacement continues near Stadium–Chinatown Station

As part of keeping our system in a state of good repair, we are replacing 5,000 linear metres of running rail at four main locations close to Metrotown, Main Street–Science World, Stadium–Chinatown and Waterfront stations.

The next area of running rail replacement is near Stadium–Chinatown Station and is taking place from today, February 23 to  March 9 16 22. Work will not be done on Fridays and Saturdays and is weather dependent.

Customers can expect modified service between Waterfront and Stadium–Chinatown stations during the specific work times.

A Special SkyTrain Service shuttle will provide 10 minute service in both directions between Waterfront and Stadium–Chinatown stations.

Details:

  • From 9:30 p.m. until the end of service, Expo Line trains travelling towards Waterfront will terminate at Stadium–Chinatown station.
  • Expo Line trains travelling towards both King George and Production Way-University will operate normally from Stadium–Chinatown stations.
  • Expo Line passengers connecting at Stadium–Chinatown should allow for 5-10 minutes of extra travel time.
  • Millennium Line and Canada Line will operate normally.
  • Schedule adjustments due to special events:
    • Tuesday, February 28: service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30 p.m., to accommodate the Canucks game.
    • Thursday, March 2: service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30 p.m., to accommodate the Canucks game.
    • Sunday, Mar. 5: service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30 p.m., to accommodate the Whitecaps game.
    • Tuesday, Mar. 7: service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30 p.m., to accommodate the Canucks game.
    • Thursday, Mar. 9: service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30 p.m., to accommodate the Canucks game.
    • Monday, Mar. 13: service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30 p.m., to accommodate the Canucks game.
    • Tuesday, Mar. 14: No work will take place on this date.
    • Thursday, Mar. 16: service change delayed one hour, beginning at 10:30 p.m., to accommodate the Canucks game.

Riders should also be sure to watch destination displays and listen for train destination announcements.

Upgrades to the Commercial–Broadway pedestrian walkway are underway!

We’re making major improvements to the pedestrian walkway at Commercial–Broadway Station to better connect you to Millennium Line platforms from the Expo Line.

To do this work, the pedestrian walkway to the Millennium Line trains (Platforms 1 and 2) at Commercial–Broadway Station will narrow.

Construction crews will partially demolish and reconstruct the existing walkway over the Grandview Cut.

The crossing will be narrowed through various phases. At the narrowest, the walkway will be reduced by 1.5 metres.

When construction is complete, the new pedestrian walkway to Platforms 1 and 2 will be 14 metres wide, roughly doubling the existing space for one of our busiest stations!

Details:

  • Access to the station and from the platform will not change. Customers can continue to use the stairs, escalators and elevators to access the platform.
  • The walkway narrowing will not affect SkyTrain service.
  • Hoarding has been put up along the entire length of the walkway. Additional lighting will be installed to ensure the area is well lit.

Station upgrades include:

  • New east platform serving westbound Expo Line trains.
  • New pedestrian walkway over Broadway, connecting the platform to the Millennium Line platforms and the westbound 99 B-Line stop.
  • Permanent queuing system and bus shelter for the 99 B-Line stop.
  • Widening of the walkway that provides access to the north station platforms (Platforms 1 and 2).
  • Two new elevators and four escalators (two going up and two going down from the platforms).
  • Expanded Broadway concourse.
  • Widened Broadway entrances to the Broadway Station.
  • New retail spaces in Broadway Station.
  • Replacement of mesh panels with glazed panels at platform level.
  • New lighting design to respond to specific conditions in the station.
  • New bike storage room that will accommodate 70+ bikes.

Crews will work around the clock to minimize the impact of this construction but passengers should allow for extra travel time – especially during peak periods – until the walkway work is completed.

Running Rail replacement begins February 5, 2017

**UPDATE** Due to snow and ice, this work for February 5 to February 8 is cancelled. Work is set to begin on February 13 if weather permits.

An important part of delivering transit service to the region is keeping our system in a good state of repair.

Sometimes that means rewiring trolley wires, station upgrades, bus refurbishments, rail work or a variety of other necessary maintenance projects.

The Running Rail Replacement Project on the Expo Line will begin on February 5 to February 8 and February 13 to February 15 starting at 9:30 p.m. as part of the SkyTrain Rail Asset State of Good Repair Program.

So far, we’ve replaced 15,013 linear metres of running rail!

  • 800 linear meters west of Main Street Station (1997)
  • 1,575 linear meters between 22nd Street and New Westminster Stations (2001)
  • 1,506 linear meters between Waterfront and Burrard Stations (2001)
  • 1,282 linear meters between Main and Stadium Stations (2003)
  • 1,200 linear meters at the curve west of Broadway Station (2006)
  • 1,400 linear meters at the OMC Gatehouse curve (2008)
  • 1,500 linear meters at the curve west on New West Station (2009)
  • 1,200 linear meters at Edmonds outbound curve and OMC2 inbound curve (2011)
  • 1,650 linear meters at OMC2 outbound curve and Edmonds Station inbound curve (2015)
  • 2,900 linear meters at Broadway Station “S” curve (2015)

During this phase, we will be replacing 5,000 linear metres of running rail at four main locations close to Metrotown, Main Street–Science World, Stadium–Chinatown and Waterfront stations.

What to expect

Due to the complex nature of scheduling this required maintenance project, we will complete this work in various phases at each location.

In order to complete this work, single tracking will occur around where the work is being done.

To help customers get where they need to go during this time, SkyTrain will also be slightly modified.

  • From 9:30 p.m. until the end of service, Expo Line trains will be single tracking (trains travel on the same track in alternating directions) at Main Street–Science World and Commercial–Broadway stations.
  • During this time Expo Line trains will only operate between Waterfront and King George stations. There will be no Expo Line trains to Production Way–University.
  • Expo Line trains between Columbia and Production Way–University stations will be temporarily replaced with Special SkyTrain Service trains operating between New Westminster and VCC–Clark stations.
  • Passengers from other stations on the Expo Line can change trains to this service at New Westminster and Columbia stations.
  • Millennium Line and Canada Line will operate normally.

Construction work continues on the SkyTrain system

**UPDATE** Due to weather conditions, the work at Commercial–Broadway Station was delayed. The pedestrian walkway to the Millennium Line trains (platforms 1 and 2) at Commercial–Broadway will narrow starting this Sunday, February 19th.

We are working hard to ensure our system meets the needs of our customers. You may have seen, or heard, crews at Stadium-Chinatown and Commercial-Broadway stations working over the last few days and weeks.

You’ve told us that you wanted more signage on the system and we are working away to make this happen. We’ve installed new signage at virtually every platform at Expo and Millennium Line stations.

What fencing and signage will look after completion

Right now, construction crews are installing a new fence to mount new directional signs at Stadium–Chinatown Station.

To ensure our customers know where to go when they are on the train, we’re installing trackside rails and fences to mount large signs.

If you’ve been on the Evergreen Extension, you’ll see similar fencing and signs installed between platforms.

These signs are essential so customers can see what station they are arriving at and the route of the train. This work will continue on Sunday to Thursday nights between the hours of approximately 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. over the next couple of weeks.

Residents in the area may hear nighttime noise as this work can only be completed when trains are not running. If we did this work during the day, this would mean we couldn’t provide service to Stadium–Chinatown Station.

We recognize that this work has an impact on residents who live near the station and we thank everyone for their patience while we make these improvements.

Upgrades continue at Commercial–Broadway Station

Beginning in early February, the pedestrian walkway to the Millennium Line trains (platforms 1 and 2) at Commercial–Broadway Station will narrow.

Construction crews will partially demolish and reconstruct the existing pedestrian walkway over the Grandview Cut.

The crossing will be narrowed through various phases. At the narrowest, the walkway will be reduced to just over four metres wide. When construction is complete, the new pedestrian walkway to platforms 1 and 2 will be 14 metres wide!

Details:

  • Access to the station and from the platform will not change. Customers can continue to use the stairs, escalators and elevators to access the platform.
  • The walkway narrowing will not affect SkyTrain service.
  • Hoarding will be put up along the entire length of the walkway. Additional lighting will be installed to ensure the area is well lit.
  • Please allow for extra travel time when connecting through Commercial-Broadway Station. Customers should expect some additional crowding at the station during peak times.

When complete, the station will include:

  • An additional platform for Expo Line trains, a widened crossing over the Grandview Cut and a new pedestrian walkway over Broadway.
  • New elevators and up and down escalators to improve access for customers with disabilities.

Together with the contractor, we are making every effort to minimize the impact of this construction activity. Crews will work around the clock to ensure that the upgrades are completed as quickly and safely as possible for the benefit of residents and users of the SkyTrain station.

Construction is expected to be complete by next winter.
