Bus stop changes at 29th Avenue Station

 

Phase one bus stop moves

Route 16 and 33 bus stops will temporarily move as of January 24.

TransLink will be upgrading the 29th Avenue Station Exchange to improve customer access, safety and security.

During this upgrade work, temporary traffic patterns and bus stop location changes will occur.

Until mid-February, the regular stops for the 16 and 33 buses will be moved outside the bus loop.

The number 16 bus bay has been relocated to north side of 29th Avenue.

The number 33 bus bay has been relocated to south side of 29th Avenue.

The upgrades for this exchange will include:

  • A new bus bay to allow all buses to pick up and drop off within the bus loop.
  • Improved lighting, glass shelters and lower profile landscaping to make the bus loop more visible and safer.
  • Three new crosswalks to improve safety and access tot he bus loop and station.
  • New bus stop ID poles with braille and tactile strips to meet accessibility standards and better direct customers.

The entire project is set to wrap up Summer 2017.

(Video) TransLink launches Phase One of the 10-year Vision with more SkyTrain and SeaBus service

Today is a great day because it marks the beginning of more transit for our region!

More transit means expanded region-wide bus and HandyDART services, improvements to major roads to reduce congestion and address bottlenecks plus more SkyTrain and SeaBus to reduce wait times and overcrowding.

These services will be rolled out this year as part of Phase One of the 10-Year Vision for Metro Vancouver Transportation.

“Metro Vancouver’s public transportation system is finally turning a corner after nearly a decade without significant region-wide investment in transit services,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “With completion of the Evergreen Extension in December, and this week’s launch of the first transit enhancements included in the 10-Year Vision, Metro Vancouver is starting to see the long-overdue transportation improvements that will get our region moving again.”

What’s new

  • SkyTrain
    • On weekdays – peak service will end 15 minutes later in the morning and last one hour longer in the afternoon and evening rush.
    • On weekends – trains will increase to match weekday off-peak frequency meaning trains will run every 3 to 6 minutes.
  • Canada Line
    • More frequent service during weekday peak hours.
    • 11 per cent increase in passenger capacity during the busiest periods – that means an extra 3,700 passengers in each direction every weekday.
  • Bus and HandyDART
    • 10 per cent increase in bus service.
    • 15 per cent increase for HandyDART meaning 85,000 more available trips annually.
  • SeaBus
    • Doubling SeaBus Service on Sundays and holidays to sailings every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

What’s next

In the coming weeks and months, more improvements of Phase One will be rolled out, including:

  • New or expanded transit services for neighbourhoods that currently have few – or no – transit options today;
  • Safer walking and cycling routes; and
  • Improvements to the Major Road Network.

An update on Joyce–Collingwood Station upgrades

If you are one of the thousands of riders passing through Joyce–Collingwood SkyTrain Station each day, you will have noticed some features of the upgrade work have already been completed!

Project Update

  • New roof and side panels for the east stationhouse are now installed.
  • Newly installed lighting improves visibility on the platform.
  • Steelwork framing for the new east stationhouse is underway.
  • Glass panel installation on the north side of the platform is now complete.

These upgrades will improve accessibility, safety and security at the fourth busiest Expo Line Station outside of downtown Vancouver.

VIDEO – 28 new SkyTrain cars ordered to improve rapid transit service in Metro Vancouver

Today is a historic day as pen was set to paper in a deal that will improve transit in our region!

A $93 million order for 28 new SkyTrain Mark III cars from Bombardier Transportation was made by TransLink and the provincial government.

This is part of the $2 billion Phase One of the 10-year vision that is funded 50 per cent by the federal government, 33 per cent by the province and the rest from our region and TransLink.

The new SkyTrain cars will provide additional service and capacity on the Expo and Millennium Lines increasing the rapid transit fleet to 314 cars.

With these new cars coming into service, more people will be able to rely on public transit, helping to reduce road congestion, greenhouse gases and improve efficient movement of people and goods across the region.

“With the critical support of our federal, provincial and regional partnerships, TransLink is ready and eager to start implementing service and infrastructure improvements outlined in Phase One of the 10-Year Vision. Today’s announcement is just one in a series of steps we’re taking to expand service for our customers and reduce wait times and crowding.”

The new train cars are scheduled to start arriving in 2018 and after extensive testing, enter into service by early 2019.

Starting in January 2017, TransLink will begin service improvements using the existing fleet for the Expo, Millennium and Canada Lines and SeaBus, with additional bus and HandyDart service improvements beginning in April 2017.

Transit and transportation improvements in Phase One

  • 10% increase in bus service
  • 15% increase in HandyDART service
  • 20% increase in rail service following delivery of new rail cars (Expo Line, Millennium Line and Evergreen Extension, Canada Line, West Coast Express)
  • Pre-construction and consultation on Broadway subway and Surrey-Langley light rail
  • New funding for improvements to the Major Road Network
  • Expansion and improvements to cycling and pedestrian networks

More connectivity for SkyTrain passengers!

Today TransLink and Rogers announced the next phase in its partnership to enhance wireless connectivity and customer experience for SkyTrain passengers.

Rogers and Fido customers will now have access to Rogers LTE wireless coverage through the Edmonds Tunnel, helping commuters stay connected across Metro Vancouver!

This next phase expands on the LTE and voice access first made available to SkyTrain customers through the Dunsmuir Tunnel in July 2016 – a significant milestone that connects passengers along one of the busiest stretches in the SkyTrain network.

“This is just one way we are working to improve the transit experience by improving cellular coverage for our customers at no cost to taxpayers. We will continue to work with Rogers to build out wireless coverage along the SkyTrain, including Evergreen, Columbia and New Westminster.”

Rogers and Fido wireless customers can now surf the Internet, make and receive calls, send and receive emails and text messages, stream video and music, and more on their mobile devices while travelling on the Expo Line between 22nd Street and Edmonds stations.

Attention Metrotown SkyTrain riders!

Some more changes are coming to Metrotown Station as we upgrade one of our busiest stations outside downtown Vancouver.

Beginning November 16, a portion of the centre stationhouse will open!

To allow for demolition to begin on the existing east entrance, the pedestrian walkway at Metrotown Station connecting the mall and bus loop will permanently close.

The station upgrades allow space for an overhead walkway to be built, however, TransLink does not own the property and it will be up to the discretion of the City of Burnaby.

We are currently working with the city to agree upon design, construction, funding and timing for the a new walkway.

Not to worry, the station is still accessible for riders! You can exit the platform via the brand new stairs in the centre stationhouse towards the east of the platform or the emergency staircase at the west end of the platform.

The future bus lane will be used for passengers to travel east or west along the south side of Central Boulevard. Concrete barricades will be installed to separate pedestrians from traffic in that area.

Compass Vending Machines and card readers will be located just outside the station, so remember to tap in and tap out to ensure you are paying the correct fare!

To help direct riders during this construction, additional staff will be on hand, but you should still allow for an additional five to 10 minutes of travel time when using this station.

**Please note** There will be no escalator access into the station, only stairs. The HandyDART and Community Shuttles will continue to run between Metrotown and Patterson stations until the new elevators open this spring.

What’s all this construction for? Let me tell you! When fully complete, the upgraded station will include:

  • A rebuilt east stationhouse and the addition of new centre and west stationhouses
  • New stairs and escalators
  • A replacement of the original elevator with three new elevators accessible via a new central entry
  • An upgraded bus exchange on Central Boulevard
  • New secure bike parking

Transit for Remembrance Day

Lest we forget

Lest we forget

Once again, TransLink and its operating companies will provide free transit to veterans and members of the Armed Forces and Coast Guard this Remembrance Day, Friday November 11, 2016.

“Providing free transit service is one small way we can honour and thank the brave men and women who protect freedom for not only every Canadian, but our neighbours around the globe.” – TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond.

Here’s how it will work:

One accessible fare gate will remain open at all SeaBus, SkyTrain and Canada Line stations from the start of service to 6:00 p.m. and transit will be free all day on buses.

Ordinary and Life Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans, Korean Veterans Association, Armed Forces and Coast Guard are invited to ride free on all conventional TransLink services, HandyDART and Canada Line YVR Add-Fare.

*Please note* the West Coast Express will not operate on Remembrance Day.

Veterans and eligible members are not required to tap their Compass Cards but please have your membership card ready to display or appear in uniform when boarding buses or entering a fare-paid zone.

For the rest of the public, transit is operating on a holiday schedule and you will only need a one-zone fare for travel across the network.

We will also be observing a moment of silence at 11:00 am, with all SkyTrain, SeaBus, and buses observing this moment at the stop reached closest to the hour.

All TransLink and operating company properties will fly their flags at half-mast.

Service returns to regular weekday schedules for all modes on Monday, November 14.

TransLink prepares for stormy weather

Storms, they are a-brewin’!

As always, TransLink’s top priority is to ensure the safety of our customers and employees. So, in preparation for the inclement weather set to hit our region over the next few days, we are taking a number of steps.

Our Emergency Management group is participating in Emergency Management BC and Environment Canada conference calls to stay apprised of the forecast and expected outcomes as well as communicating within the organization to ensure necessary preparations are made.

Bus

Tree branches falling into our trolley overhead wires can be an issue during high-wind conditions, so we are checking known risk locations to prepare.

We also sometimes face road debris, which can result in detours for our bus service. Transit Supervisors and other support staff out on the road, such as Transit Security, in order to proactively identify such problem areas and communicate them out. Once identified, we can react quickly by contacting the municipality responsible for clearing the trees or debris.

SkyTrain

In case of high winds, SkyTrain service over the SkyBridge between New Westminster and Surrey may operate at reduced speeds.

If wind speeds exceed 100 kph, service could be temporarily suspended.

We’ve also proactively reached out to construction projects adjacent to SkyTrain to ensure items are properly secured, to prevent anything being blown onto the tracks.

Here’s what you can do to prepare yourself:

  • Sign up for Transit Alerts so we can let you know if there are any service issues or changes
  • Follow our fabulous Customer Information team @TransLink on Twitter or phone 604-953-3333.
  • Plan ahead with our Trip Planner and give yourself extra time on your commute
  • Be aware! More people than usual tend to take transit during nasty weather – common transit courtesy applies even more on days like these!
  • Be visible! A bus operator has a lot to be aware of in AND outside of the bus. Make yourself visible to them! Wear bright, reflective clothing and stand close to the bus stop poll.
  • Be patient! Traffic lights may not be working properly that could cause detours for buses, same goes for debris on routes.

We will continue to monitor the weather and get the word out to all customers if there are any service impacts. Until then, stay safe, stay dry and happy transiting!

Consultation begins for Phase One of the 10-Year Vision for Metro Vancouver Transit and Transportation

TransLink and the Mayors’ Council are looking to the future to meet the challenges of growth and congestion in our region.

Last month, the council agreed upon a proposed plan and presented Phase One of their 10-Year Vision to the public.

Now it’s your turn to weigh in!

From October 11 to 31, 2016, TransLink is inviting Metro Vancouver residents to provide feedback on the approximately $2 billion plan that would increase transit services and improve roads, cycling, and walking infrastructure across the entire region.

Phase One details

  • Increase bus service by 10% across the region, starting in early 2017, including five new B-Line express routes
  • Purchase 50 new SkyTrain cars for the Expo, Millennium and Canada Lines, plus five new West Coast Express cars and a new SeaBus
  • Increase SkyTrain service in early 2017, by providing more service during mid-day and early evening hours
  • Improve the region’s major road network
  • Improve and expand walking and cycling infrastructure across the region;
  • Improve access to transit stations and stops
  • Continue planning and design work for the Broadway subway and Surrey light rail
  • Continue investing in system maintenance and performance.

The Phase One Plan would be paid for through a fair and balanced funding formula – leveraging an initial federal contribution of $370 Million, a provincial government contribution of $246 Million and a regional contribution of $1.3 Billion.

The regional funding would be raised through a number of existing and new sources including modest increases to transit fares and Metro Vancouver residential and business property taxes.

Holiday service for Thanksgiving

Gobble, gobble, friends!

Thanksgiving is almost upon us and that means holiday service for the transit network on October 10, 2016.

Thanksgiving Monday transit:

  • BusSkyTrain, and SeaBus services will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule.
  • West Coast Express and TrainBus service will not operate.
  • Holiday fares are in effect meaning you only need a one-zone fare to travel across the region!

Please note that the Compass Customer Service Centre and Lost Property Office will be closed.

Regular weekday schedules for all modes return on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

Investing in Metro Vancouver’s transit future: The 10-Year Vision

10 Year Vision

In Metro Vancouver today there is overcrowding on the transit network, increased traffic congestion and another one million people moving here over the next 25 years.

It’s pretty clear that our transportation network needs new investment and we need it now.

That is why our local mayors created a 10-year Vision and today, the Mayor’s Council released some more information about Phase One of this vision.

This plan sets out the new services and infrastructure needs of our region now and down the road.

Phase One of the 10-Year Vision is funded through regional funding sources to match investments by the provincial and federal governments.

Phase One details:

  • Increase bus service by 10% across the region, starting in early 2017, including five new B-Line express routes
  • Purchase 50 new SkyTrain cars for the Expo, Millennium and Canada Lines, plus five new West Coast Express cars and a new SeaBus
  • Increase SkyTrain service in early 2017, by providing more service during mid-day and early evening hours
  • Improve the region’s major road network
  • Improve and expand walking and cycling infrastructure across the region;
  • Improve access to transit stations and stops
  • Continue planning and design work for the Broadway subway and Surrey light rail
  • Continue investing in system maintenance and performance.

The Phase One plan includes regional funding sources so that, if approved, we can begin rolling out new services and projects in the Vision starting in January 2017.

The goal is to reduce traffic and make transit commutes faster and more comfortable for all riders in communities across the region.

The public will get a chance to weigh in on the plan during public consultation that will take place in October.

I Love Transit: LEGO my SkyTrain!

For 80’s kids (and decades either side), LEGO was a way of life.

You’ll remember building the next Empire State Building, CN tower or the complete Star Trek Enterprise and, of course, the sound your parents made as they stepped on the extraordinarily painful blocks!

William Fong was a childhood fan as well but didn’t actually buy LEGO until he decided to make a SkyTrain!

We got a chance to ask Will some questions about this intensely detailed project.

What made you want to make a SkyTrain?

As someone who is a daily user of the transit system, and as someone who has a minor interest in design in general, I found that the 2009 Skytrain stock extremely intriguing. It’s the most modern and well designed piece of equipment in the fleet (although Xcelsiors are pretty excellent buses and the new Bombardier 300’s probably trump that claim, too).

The colour scheme of the exterior and interior, streamlined shape as well as adding user friendliness, like destination boards, updated system maps, better seat layout and air conditioning. Everything was done right on the 2009 trains!

I think the main reason I wanted to recreate some of the great design features in LEGO was because I had the passing realization that there were some new LEGO pieces that had striking resemblance to the angles on the trains. I designed the LEGO train mostly around the windscreen due to its identical curved shape to the real life train. I didn’t start building it until I was satisfied with the accuracy of the curvature of the roof as well as finding a way to have doors that could slide open. I also chose this specific train because of the number of seats. Three seats and an aisle is about as wide as you can make a train in LEGO before it starts looking too wide.

The details are so perfect, how did you get the stickers and other minature details of the actual train ON the LEGO model?

I made the stickers in Photoshop. Interior graphics like the system map and the safety and security sign were entirely drawn from scratch using photos as a reference. I didn’t want to print photos as stickers because they didn’t scale to the LEGO very well.

The exterior livery was based off of and extremely altered from the information sheet that was shown alongside the 2009 presentation of the new Mark II stock, which I found online. The corporate and government logos as well as official fonts were found on the internet. I then sent the artwork off to a printing company named Model Decal Depot at Adlion Printing to have the graphics put onto vinyl stickers. The stickers are especially important because they complete the train more than people may realize, mostly because the doors are stickers that have been applied onto LEGO window panes.

What are some of the cool features of your model?

The model is as accurate to real life as I could build it. It has an identical seat count to its real life counterpart. Curved handrails, which may not seem remarkable, but when building out of lego, it is! It has an articulated corridor joining the two cars. It has the same number of ceiling lights as in real life. Orange “Door open” lights in the door jambs that can be toggled on the left or right doors. The doors can also be slid open and are not just decorative placeholders. Directional lights, so that when the headlights are on at one end of the train, the taillights are on at the opposite end. The advertising boards are illuminated using something called electro-luminescent tape (a strip of copper that is coated with phosphorus and glows when an alternating current is applied to it).

It’s also not just a stationary model. Each train is also powered by two 9V DC motors, so it can move along track. Hopefully by next BrickCan, I’ll have built enough elevated guideway for it to run a decent length.

How long did it take you to create?

I think I finished the digital model in 2011. I wasn’t satisfied with the accuracy until late 2013 and held off building it until early 2014.

The digital model continued to go through several revisions which slowed me down, but it was mostly the cost of the model that made me build it on and off for a while. Building one car was costly enough, but when I found out that there was going to be a LEGO convention in Vancouver, I decided to spend the extra money and twin the first car and build some overhead guideway for it to sit on. It wasn’t right up until April 2016 during BrickCan that I completed both cars and the two sections of track.

Technically, I’m still not done yet. I just finished gutting and reinstalling all of the electronics this month. I want to reprint the stickers to more closely match some colours in the livery as well as correct some inaccuracies. I’m also going to install digital destination boards, although I’m running into technical issues with the hardware for that right now. Maybe later on, I’ll also install speakers inside the train, too.

How many pieces are involved?

Each train car has approximately 1900 lego pieces and 60 LEDs. 2000 pieces for the track and supports.

Have you done any other notable Metro Vancouver model recreations?

This is my first ever model, but I am planning to build others in the future. Next one might be a trolley bus from Vancouver’s not-too-distant past. I’m also trying to figure out how to recreate the new Innovia 300, but it’s been tough to get started because the angles are so different.

What is the most complicated project you’ve made out of LEGO?

This train. From trouble shooting how to cram in all the wires to trying to find workarounds for discontinued and extremely expensive pieces, it was a headache. Not to say that I won’t build something again. Maybe just something cheaper that is less technical. At least I semi-know what I’m doing now. Prior to this, I hadn’t picked up a soldering pen since grade 8.

99 bus stop at Commercial–Broadway returns to its original home

Good news, 99 users!

The bus stop for the 99 B-Line at Commercial–Broadway Station will move back to its original location, outside of Shoppers Drug Mart, on Friday, September 2.

Earlier this year, we moved the 99 stop location so construction crews could use the area to relocate utilities and build support columns for the new walkway over Broadway.

We are happy to report that this work is now complete!

Queueing lines will also be repainted, making it easier for passengers to board buses and keep sidewalk space available for pedestrians.

We recognize that bus stop moves have an impact on our customers and we thank everyone for their patience while we improve Commercial–Broadway Station.

**Please note** The 9/N9 stop will remain in its current location on the other side of Commercial Drive.

  • An additional platform for Expo Line trains, a widened crossing over the Grandview Cut and a new walkway over Broadway to enable the system to expand for future customers, particularly as our region grows.
  • New elevators and up and down escalators to improve access for customers with disabilities.
  • Better integration with the surrounding community to make it easier to connect to and from the SkyTrain system

That’s a wrap! The Mark III enters service

What a beaut!

August 18th, 2016 “marks” another momentous day in SkyTrain history. The highly anticipated Mark III entered revenue service for the first time and it wasn’t without fanfare!

If you’re as excited as we were about its arrival, you likely followed the Mark III’s journey across the country, endeavoured to #SpotTheMarkIII during system testing, entered our contest to become a Mark III VIP, or stopped by in person to take the inaugural ride.

This Mark III is now in regular service and will be joined shortly by its sibling Mark III SkyTrains once they have completed their testing and are rail ready!

An update on Metrotown Station upgrades

***UPDATE 2:

As part of the ongoing work at Metrotown Station, construction crews will lift the second half of a massive 120 ton overhead steel structure overnight on September 10.

To give crews the time and space they need to safely install the loop truss, SkyTrain will not run between Patterson and Royal Oak stations after midnight on Saturday, September 10.

Frequent shuttle buses will run between Patterson, Metrotown and Royal Oak stations for customers who want to travel to or from Metrotown Station, eastbound beyond Patterson Station, or westbound beyond Royal Oak Station.  Eastbound train service from Royal Oak Station will also be extended to allow connections from the last train and shuttle bus.

Customers should plan for an additional 15 to 20 minutes of travel time while the work is underway. Customers may find it faster to take the Millennium Line from Commercial-Broadway.


***UPDATE:

Construction crews were successfully able to lift the first of two loop trusses into place in the early hours this morning! Therefore, Metrotown Station will remain open and shuttle buses between Patterson and Royal Oak stations will no longer be required this weekend.

The lifting of the second loop truss on September 9 and 10 will go ahead as planned and SkyTrain will not run between Patterson and Royal Oak stations after 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 and after midnight on Saturday, Sept. 10.

As you are likely aware, upgrades to Metrotown Station are well underway that will improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security at one of the busiest stations on the SkyTrain system.

What’s new

  • New escalators, stairs and elevators to improve access for all our customers.
  • More access to and from the platforms to enable the system to expand for future customers, particularly as the region grows.
  • Updated design features to improve safety and security for all our customers.
  • Better integration with the surrounding community and bus exchange to make it easier for people to connect to and from the SkyTrain system.
  • Improved bus connections.

What’s happening now

Crews have completed assembling the large loop trusses on the ground.

The loop trusses, which will be installed above the west stationhouse as the station’s structural roof, arrived in four separate pieces.

Crews have assembled them on the ground in two pieces. Once fully constructed, the loop truss will weigh approximately 120 tons (240,000lbs) and will be around 64.5 metres (212 feet) in length!

Upcoming work

Construction crews will lift the loop truss, over two weekends: August 26-28 and September 9-10.

In order to lift the 120 ton structure into place, two cranes will be used – a 250 ton crane and a 500 ton crane.

And guess what? We’re going to have a video time lapse of the installation for you!

However, this is some big time work and in order to give crews the time and space they need to safely install the loop truss, SkyTrain will not run between Patterson and Royal Oak stations during the following times:

  • After 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26
  • After midnight on Saturday, Aug. 27
  • After 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9
  • After midnight on Saturday, Sept. 10

Frequent shuttle buses will run between Patterson, Metrotown and Royal Oak stations for customers who want to travel to or from Metrotown Station, eastbound beyond Patterson Station, or westbound beyond Royal Oak Station.
