Investing in Metro Vancouver’s transit future: The 10-Year Vision

10 Year Vision

In Metro Vancouver today there is overcrowding on the transit network, increased traffic congestion and another one million people moving here over the next 25 years.

It’s pretty clear that our transportation network needs new investment and we need it now.

That is why our local mayors created a 10-year Vision and today, the Mayor’s Council released some more information about Phase One of this vision.

This plan sets out the new services and infrastructure needs of our region now and down the road.

Phase One of the 10-Year Vision is funded through regional funding sources to match investments by the provincial and federal governments.

Phase One details:

  • Increase bus service by 10% across the region, starting in early 2017, including five new B-Line express routes
  • Purchase 50 new SkyTrain cars for the Expo, Millennium and Canada Lines, plus five new West Coast Express cars and a new SeaBus
  • Increase SkyTrain service in early 2017, by providing more service during mid-day and early evening hours
  • Improve the region’s major road network
  • Improve and expand walking and cycling infrastructure across the region;
  • Improve access to transit stations and stops
  • Continue planning and design work for the Broadway subway and Surrey light rail
  • Continue investing in system maintenance and performance.

The Phase One plan includes regional funding sources so that, if approved, we can begin rolling out new services and projects in the Vision starting in January 2017.

The goal is to reduce traffic and make transit commutes faster and more comfortable for all riders in communities across the region.

The public will get a chance to weigh in on the plan during public consultation that will take place in October.

Next Steps:

September 2016: 10-Year Vision: Phase One plan introduced

October 11–31, 2016: Public consultation on the Phase One plan

November 2016: Mayors’ Council and TransLink Board approve final plan

January 2017: Transit system improvements begin

I Love Transit: LEGO my SkyTrain!

For 80’s kids (and decades either side), LEGO was a way of life.

You’ll remember building the next Empire State Building, CN tower or the complete Star Trek Enterprise and, of course, the sound your parents made as they stepped on the extraordinarily painful blocks!

William Fong was a childhood fan as well but didn’t actually buy LEGO until he decided to make a SkyTrain!

We got a chance to ask Will some questions about this intensely detailed project.

What made you want to make a SkyTrain?

As someone who is a daily user of the transit system, and as someone who has a minor interest in design in general, I found that the 2009 Skytrain stock extremely intriguing. It’s the most modern and well designed piece of equipment in the fleet (although Xcelsiors are pretty excellent buses and the new Bombardier 300’s probably trump that claim, too).

The colour scheme of the exterior and interior, streamlined shape as well as adding user friendliness, like destination boards, updated system maps, better seat layout and air conditioning. Everything was done right on the 2009 trains!

I think the main reason I wanted to recreate some of the great design features in LEGO was because I had the passing realization that there were some new LEGO pieces that had striking resemblance to the angles on the trains. I designed the LEGO train mostly around the windscreen due to its identical curved shape to the real life train. I didn’t start building it until I was satisfied with the accuracy of the curvature of the roof as well as finding a way to have doors that could slide open. I also chose this specific train because of the number of seats. Three seats and an aisle is about as wide as you can make a train in LEGO before it starts looking too wide.

The details are so perfect, how did you get the stickers and other minature details of the actual train ON the LEGO model?

I made the stickers in Photoshop. Interior graphics like the system map and the safety and security sign were entirely drawn from scratch using photos as a reference. I didn’t want to print photos as stickers because they didn’t scale to the LEGO very well.

The exterior livery was based off of and extremely altered from the information sheet that was shown alongside the 2009 presentation of the new Mark II stock, which I found online. The corporate and government logos as well as official fonts were found on the internet. I then sent the artwork off to a printing company named Model Decal Depot at Adlion Printing to have the graphics put onto vinyl stickers. The stickers are especially important because they complete the train more than people may realize, mostly because the doors are stickers that have been applied onto LEGO window panes.

What are some of the cool features of your model?

The model is as accurate to real life as I could build it. It has an identical seat count to its real life counterpart. Curved handrails, which may not seem remarkable, but when building out of lego, it is! It has an articulated corridor joining the two cars. It has the same number of ceiling lights as in real life. Orange “Door open” lights in the door jambs that can be toggled on the left or right doors. The doors can also be slid open and are not just decorative placeholders. Directional lights, so that when the headlights are on at one end of the train, the taillights are on at the opposite end. The advertising boards are illuminated using something called electro-luminescent tape (a strip of copper that is coated with phosphorus and glows when an alternating current is applied to it).

It’s also not just a stationary model. Each train is also powered by two 9V DC motors, so it can move along track. Hopefully by next BrickCan, I’ll have built enough elevated guideway for it to run a decent length.

How long did it take you to create?

I think I finished the digital model in 2011. I wasn’t satisfied with the accuracy until late 2013 and held off building it until early 2014.

The digital model continued to go through several revisions which slowed me down, but it was mostly the cost of the model that made me build it on and off for a while. Building one car was costly enough, but when I found out that there was going to be a LEGO convention in Vancouver, I decided to spend the extra money and twin the first car and build some overhead guideway for it to sit on. It wasn’t right up until April 2016 during BrickCan that I completed both cars and the two sections of track.

Technically, I’m still not done yet. I just finished gutting and reinstalling all of the electronics this month. I want to reprint the stickers to more closely match some colours in the livery as well as correct some inaccuracies. I’m also going to install digital destination boards, although I’m running into technical issues with the hardware for that right now. Maybe later on, I’ll also install speakers inside the train, too.

How many pieces are involved?

Each train car has approximately 1900 lego pieces and 60 LEDs. 2000 pieces for the track and supports.

Have you done any other notable Metro Vancouver model recreations?

This is my first ever model, but I am planning to build others in the future. Next one might be a trolley bus from Vancouver’s not-too-distant past. I’m also trying to figure out how to recreate the new Innovia 300, but it’s been tough to get started because the angles are so different.

What is the most complicated project you’ve made out of LEGO?

This train. From trouble shooting how to cram in all the wires to trying to find workarounds for discontinued and extremely expensive pieces, it was a headache. Not to say that I won’t build something again. Maybe just something cheaper that is less technical. At least I semi-know what I’m doing now. Prior to this, I hadn’t picked up a soldering pen since grade 8.

99 bus stop at Commercial–Broadway returns to its original home

Good news, 99 users!

The bus stop for the 99 B-Line at Commercial–Broadway Station will move back to its original location, outside of Shoppers Drug Mart, on Friday, September 2.

Earlier this year, we moved the 99 stop location so construction crews could use the area to relocate utilities and build support columns for the new walkway over Broadway.

We are happy to report that this work is now complete!

Queueing lines will also be repainted, making it easier for passengers to board buses and keep sidewalk space available for pedestrians.

We recognize that bus stop moves have an impact on our customers and we thank everyone for their patience while we improve Commercial–Broadway Station.

**Please note** The 9/N9 stop will remain in its current location on the other side of Commercial Drive.

Upgrades at Commercial-Broadway Station which are expected to be complete by summer 2017 include:

  • An additional platform for Expo Line trains, a widened crossing over the Grandview Cut and a new walkway over Broadway to enable the system to expand for future customers, particularly as our region grows.
  • New elevators and up and down escalators to improve access for customers with disabilities.
  • Better integration with the surrounding community to make it easier to connect to and from the SkyTrain system

That’s a wrap! The Mark III enters service

What a beaut!

August 18th, 2016 “marks” another momentous day in SkyTrain history. The highly anticipated Mark III entered revenue service for the first time and it wasn’t without fanfare!

If you’re as excited as we were about its arrival, you likely followed the Mark III’s journey across the country, endeavoured to #SpotTheMarkIII during system testing, entered our contest to become a Mark III VIP, or stopped by in person to take the inaugural ride.

If not, don’t you worry – you can catch all that you may have missed right here!

Watch as SkyTrain President & General Manager Vivienne King and TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond welcomed the new Mark III into Waterfront station.

An update on Metrotown Station upgrades

***UPDATE 2:

As part of the ongoing work at Metrotown Station, construction crews will lift the second half of a massive 120 ton overhead steel structure overnight on September 10.

To give crews the time and space they need to safely install the loop truss, SkyTrain will not run between Patterson and Royal Oak stations after midnight on Saturday, September 10.

Frequent shuttle buses will run between Patterson, Metrotown and Royal Oak stations for customers who want to travel to or from Metrotown Station, eastbound beyond Patterson Station, or westbound beyond Royal Oak Station.  Eastbound train service from Royal Oak Station will also be extended to allow connections from the last train and shuttle bus.

Customers should plan for an additional 15 to 20 minutes of travel time while the work is underway. Customers may find it faster to take the Millennium Line from Commercial-Broadway.


***UPDATE:

Construction crews were successfully able to lift the first of two loop trusses into place in the early hours this morning! Therefore, Metrotown Station will remain open and shuttle buses between Patterson and Royal Oak stations will no longer be required this weekend.

The lifting of the second loop truss on September 9 and 10 will go ahead as planned and SkyTrain will not run between Patterson and Royal Oak stations after 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 and after midnight on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Please note single-tracking as part of regular SkyTrain maintenance will continue. For more information, visit translink.ca/alerts.


As you are likely aware, upgrades to Metrotown Station are well underway that will improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security at one of the busiest stations on the SkyTrain system.

What’s new

  • New escalators, stairs and elevators to improve access for all our customers.
  • More access to and from the platforms to enable the system to expand for future customers, particularly as the region grows.
  • Updated design features to improve safety and security for all our customers.
  • Better integration with the surrounding community and bus exchange to make it easier for people to connect to and from the SkyTrain system.
  • Improved bus connections.

What’s happening now

Crews have completed assembling the large loop trusses on the ground.

The loop trusses, which will be installed above the west stationhouse as the station’s structural roof, arrived in four separate pieces.

Crews have assembled them on the ground in two pieces. Once fully constructed, the loop truss will weigh approximately 120 tons (240,000lbs) and will be around 64.5 metres (212 feet) in length!

Upcoming work

Construction crews will lift the loop truss, over two weekends: August 26-28 and September 9-10.

In order to lift the 120 ton structure into place, two cranes will be used – a 250 ton crane and a 500 ton crane.

And guess what? We’re going to have a video time lapse of the installation for you!

However, this is some big time work and in order to give crews the time and space they need to safely install the loop truss, SkyTrain will not run between Patterson and Royal Oak stations during the following times:

  • After 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26
  • After midnight on Saturday, Aug. 27
  • After 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9
  • After midnight on Saturday, Sept. 10

Frequent shuttle buses will run between Patterson, Metrotown and Royal Oak stations for customers who want to travel to or from Metrotown Station, eastbound beyond Patterson Station, or westbound beyond Royal Oak Station.

Eastbound train service from Royal Oak Station will also be extended to allow connections from the last train and shuttle bus.

Come out and meet the Mark IIIs!

After building, shipping and extensive safety testing, our shiny new Mark III SkyTrains are ready to enter service!

These beauties are fully articulated (you can walk from one end of the train to the other), have more room for standing passengers, wheelchairs, bikes, strollers and riders with luggage, are more environmentally efficient and so much more!

If you want to see more of the new trains, come on out to our Mark III public open house this Thursday – from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

While our Mark III VIP contest winners will have some extra fun, everyone is invited to see the stationary train on the inbound platform at Waterfront Station before it heads into service.

Remember! This event takes place on the SkyTrain platform so, if you plan to attend, you will need to have proof of valid fare while in the Fare Paid Zone.

We are so lucky to be treated to the Honda Celebration of Light again this year!composite_14690452769840

Here are the dates for these sparkling displays:

Saturday, July 23 – Netherlands

Wednesday, July 27 – Australia

Saturday July 30 – U.S. A. (DISNEY!!)

All shows begin at 10 p.m.

To make sure everyone can get to and from these spectacular events, TransLink has added more service for all three nights to accommodate the fireworks at English Bay.

West Vancouver Transit

West Vancouver Transit will operate additional service go to and from Downtown Vancouver before and after each event. There will be additional 255 Service to Lynn Valley from Dundarave.

SkyTrain Expo/Millennium/Canada Lines will run additional trains beginning mid-afternoon, at near-peak service levels lasting well past the end of the events.

Expo Line: Last train will leave Waterfront for King George at 1:16am, with connections to the Millennium Line at Commercial-Broadway.

Millennium Line: Last train to Lougheed will leave Waterfront Station at 1:11am

Canada Line: Last train will leave Waterfront for Richmond-Brighouse at 1:15am

West Coast Express: WCE will offer a special train on July 30 only, leaving Mission City at 7 p.m., arriving at Waterfront Station at 8:15pm The return train departs Waterfront Station at midnight, arriving back at Mission City approximately 1:15am.

SeaBus will provide extra and extended service for each of the Celebration of Light events.

  • July 23, 27 and 30: We’re extending our 15-minute service until 12 a.m., and then every 30 minutes until the last sailing at 1:22 a.m. from the South Terminal.

Some downtown and West End buses are also re-routing during these times. Full details can be found online here.

Station access

Before, during and after the events, transit stations will be open, but some will have modified access to ensure customer comfort and safety.

Waterfront Station: After 10:30 p.m., Expo and Millennium line customers who do not require an elevator may only access the station from the Howe Street entrance, north of Cordova. All Canada Line and SeaBus customers, and Expo and Millennium line customers who need an elevator, can access Waterfront Station through the Cordova Street entrance. The Canada Line Granville and Hastings entrance will remain fully accessible for Canada Line customers.

Granville Station: Customers can enter the station from Dunsmuir Street only after 10:30 p.m. until crowds have cleared. Also, there will be no access to Expo and Millennium trains heading towards Waterfront Station after this time.

Burrard Station: Bikes cannot be locked at the station entrance from 9 p.m. and should be removed by 10:30 p.m. onwards, until the expected crowds have cleared. Customers will not be able to access Expo and Millennium trains towards Waterfront Station after 10:30 p.m.

**Passengers will not be permitted to board SkyTrain
with bikes after the events until crowds are clear**

Rogers and Fido customers you are now connected at downtown Expo Line stations

Exciting news! Today, Rogers announced it has turned on LTE wireless service in the SkyTrain Dunsmuir Tunnel.

TransLink has partnered with Rogers to provide strong LTE connectivity while on the SkyTrain and – the best part is this service improvement is being made with no cost to taxpayers.

Now, Rogers and Fido customers can surf the web, make/receive calls or texts, stream video and music and catch Pokemon all while travelling through the Dunsmuir Tunnel; including Stadium–Chinatown, Granville, Burrard and Waterfront stations.

Here are all the details on the enhanced connectivity on the SkyTrain!

How do you get wireless service in a tunnel?

This type of install is referred to as a DAS or a Distributed Antenna System. Rogers worked tirelessly over many nights to install equipment in the stations and throughout the Dunsmuir Tunnel.

Non-revenue night work was necessary to ensure passenger service would not be disrupted in any way.  SkyTrain staff also provided great support during this installation.

What are the benefits?

Increased access to cellular data and connectivity is important to our customers!

TransLink has engaged industry experts to ensure that we have a reliable and sustainable network in place.

Rogers and Fido customers now have uninterrupted LTE connectivity while travelling along the Dunsmuir tunnel and can browse the web and make calls.  This improves the safety, security and convenience and is part of our continued effort to improve customer experience.

Are there any plans to expand LTE service to other areas or other carriers?

We are finding innovative ways to expand and diversify revenue sources while delivering a service that customers have requested.

Rogers will continue to expand LTE service along the SkyTrain, specifically, the Edmonds, Columbia, New Westminster and Evergreen tunnels. The DAS system has been configured to support additional carriers so we look forward to other carriers also taking advantage of this opportunity to improve LTE connectivity to the public.

Is LTE the same as Wi-Fi?

The two major categories of wireless internet access for mobile devices are cellular wide area networks and Wi-Fi local area networks.

The biggest difference and reason why we are pursuing cellular access is that Wi-Fi is tied to a router and has a limited range to a confined area, approximately 50 to 100 feet, whereas a cellular network provides access anywhere, through your data plan when you’re out of Wi-Fi range.

Station upgrade news from Joyce–Collingwood

As you may well know, upgrades to Joyce–Collingwood Station are underway!

The upgrades will improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security at the fourth busiest Expo Line Station outside of Downtown Vancouver.

Project benefits

  • New elevator and up and down escalators in the east stationhouse
  • Improved station design with better lighting and visibility
  • Better integration with the community for easier SkyTrain connections

Project update

  • The majority of ground-level demolition work is now complete.
  • Installation of concrete columns and footings to support the new east stationhouse is ongoing.
  • Painting work has begun.

Upcoming work

On July 24, 2016, construction crews are switching out the power source at the station. During this time, several bus stops will be relocated from 5:30 p.m. to end of service to in order to give crews the space they need to work. Signs will be installed at the bus loop to direct customers to their stop. Escalators and elevators will also be out of service during this time.

Below is a summary of what customers can expect at the station over the coming months:

  • The east entrance will remain closed until upgrades are complete in fall 2017, when the project is expected to be complete.
  • Steel and roofing work is expected to begin later this summer.
  • Noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating will continue.

Spot the Mark III – testing continues this weekend!

So shiny and new!

Get ready transit fans because the Mark IIIs are almost here!!!

This weekend you may see them being tested in regular service on the Expo and Millennium Lines.

YES! It’s true!

You won’t be able to actually ride the one, four-car test train just yet and there will be STAs on the trains at the doors just to make sure no eager beavers jump on.

Why the testing?

Think of the trains as pilots. They have to complete a certain amount of hours in a variety of different service situations and testing scenarios before they are given the green light to be used in service.

We do this testing to ensure that the new trains are safe for all passengers and staff.

The third and final phase of testing allows actual SkyTrain passengers to ride the Mark IIIs when they are put into regular service.

Stay tuned for details on that exciting day!

What’s different about the Mark IIIs?

Let me tell you!

  • The cars are all connected – meaning you can walk from one end to the other and move about freely within the train.
  • These cars also have more room for standing passengers, wheelchairs, bikes, strollers and riders with luggage.
  • Seats are an inch lower, which helps people like me whose feet dangle on the Mark IIs!

  • These trains are green. No, not the colour. They are more energy efficient! They have improved LED lighting and longer lasting battery system – lasting 25 years compared to the 10 year life span in our existing fleet.

The latest news from the New Westminster Station upgrades

New West east station entrance

Upgrade work continues to march forward

Construction is well underway at New Westminster Station while we upgrade the station to improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security.

Project status:

After almost a year of station upgrades, New Westminster Station upgrades will soon be complete!

Here are some highlights of the work that has taken place over the past few months:

  • The east entrance fully re-opened with an upgraded staircase and a newly replaced escalator.
  • The staircase at the south entrance reopened as work continues to reopen the escalator.
  • Work progressed on the installation of the new south entrance elevator.
  • Installation of permanent lighting in the concourse area continued; most of the ceiling is now in place.
  • Benches have been installed at the platform level.
  • Construction fencing continues to be removed.
  • Painting throughout the station is complete.

What to expect:

Our top priority is the safety of the public, passengers, employees, and contractors.

Due to the nature of construction activity, we recognize there will be impacts to the public, including noise, traffic impacts and changes to SkyTrain service and station access.

Below is a summary of the short-term work that passengers and neighbours can expect:

  • South entrance escalator to reopen.
  • Installation of the south elevator to be completed and in operation this summer.
  • Ceiling panels at the concourse and platform levels to be fully installed.
  • Permanent lighting throughout the station to be completed.
  • North entrance to fully re-open this summer with an upgraded staircase and a newly replaced escalator.
  • Noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating will continue.

Transit funding announcement for B.C.

Today is big day for transit in Metro Vancouver and all across British Columbia!

Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau and B.C. Premier Christy Clark have announced that they have signed an agreement resulting in more than $900 million being invested – by the Government of Canada, British Columbia and municipalities – in public transit projects across the province.

So, what does this mean for transit in your community?

Take a look at the plan for the first phase of investment in our region:

Metro Vancouver TransLink Phase 1 of Investing in Canada includes:

  • The purchase of additional SkyTrain vehicles for the Expo, Millennium, and Canada Lines
  • A new West Coast Express locomotive
  • A new SeaBus
  • Upgrades to SkyTrain stations
  • Design and planning for Rapid Transit South of Fraser and the Millennium Line Extension along Broadway

Update: Commercial–Broadway station upgrades

Broadway Commercial track and train

Commercial–Broadway Station is the busiest station on the network

Upgrades to improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security at Commercial–Broadway Station, one of the busiest stations on the SkyTrain system, are well underway.

Project Status:

  • Two new columns were constructed on either side of Broadway to support the new pedestrian walkway.
  • A steel mesh wall along with the roof structure and its support columns were installed for the new Broadway platform.
  • Concrete columns were erected in the Grandview Cut to support a widened pedestrian overpass to Platforms 1 and 2.

Upcoming work means the Broadway entrance at the south stationhouse (beside CIBC) will be closed from start of service Saturday, June 18, while crews remove three fare gates to make space for construction of the expanded station entrance.

The entrance will reopen prior to start of service on Monday, June 20.

What passengers and neighbours can expect:

  • Customers can access the station from the entrance off 10th Avenue, or from the north stationhouse on the other side of Broadway.
  • SkyTrain attendants will be present on the platform, in the concourse and outside the station to help guide customers to the 10th Avenue entrance.
  • Signs will be installed to direct customers.
  • When the station entrance reopens, there will be six fare gates, two of which are accessible gates. We know that six fare gates will be more than enough for the number of passengers who use this entrance.

An update on Metrotown Station upgrade work

West Stationhouse loop truss

West station house loop truss

Have you noticed the huge steel structures being constructed outside Metrotown Station?

Over the past few weeks, crews have been constructing a massive loop truss which will be installed above the west station house – providing structural support for the station’s roof. MultivistaPhoto-2016-06-09 (1)

The loop truss is so massive, in fact, that it was shipped to the work site in four separate pieces, all of which arrived in May.

Crews have also been working on building eight columns which will support the final structure. 

Over the coming weeks, crews will continue fabricating the loop truss, and later this summer it will be hoisted into place with two separate tandem lifts.

More details to come on what this will mean for customers.

Once fully constructed, the loop truss will weigh approximately 70 tons (140,000lbs) and will be around 64.5 meters (212 feet) in length. 

A similar loop truss will be constructed and then installed in the east stationhouse.
