So do I have this right, if the system errors and you are billed incorrectly you are simply SOL? That's a pretty poor business practice if you ask me.

I am a tranlink employee. Why can't some arrangement be made for translink employees to have the toll fee waived when travelling to a translink workplace?

Hi Pat, I sent your note over to the Quickpass folks and here is what they have sent me.

The Golden Ears Bridge uses the sophisticated Quickpass electronic tolling system, which allows drivers to cross the bridge and pay the toll without stopping or slowing traffic. Our system processes hundreds of thousands of transactions each month, and has an accuracy rating of over 99.5%. To ensure that our systems and equipment are in peak running order, all are monitored regularly by our team. You will note a catwalk structure spanning the north end of the bridge – this is called the tolling gantry, and is where the majority of the tolling systems’ equipment is housed. As vehicles pass beneath the gantry, electronic sensors, cameras, and lasers capture images of their license plates, and measure their dimensions to determine the vehicle class. Plate information is forwarded electronically to ICBC, which provides the name and address of the vehicle’s owner. The owner then receives a bill for their crossings in the mail; customers can also choose to register for e-billing by contacting the Quickpass customer service center. Frequent users of the bridge can choose to lease and install a Quickpass transponder in their vehicle; as vehicles equipped with a transponder pass beneath the tolling gantry, the unit emits a signal which is picked up by antennae on the bridge. These transactions are recorded and automatically posted to the customers’ account. To ensure that transponders in adjoining lanes are not being picked up in yours, the system uses the dimensions of your vehicle to determine where the transponder signal will originate from. It is for this reason that the placement guidelines are very specific for the transponder units. Failure to adhere to these guidelines can result in missed readings on your transponder. As per the Electronic Tolling Agreement, the transponder must be affixed in your vehicle according to the mounting instructions provided in the transponder guide (5.2). The Agreement also states that should the transponder not be picked up and a video image of the license plate recorded, Translink shall be entitled to charge the toll at the video registered rate (5.4). Per these guidelines, Quickpass has adopted a policy to adjust missed transponder readings only if the unit is properly affixed in the vehicle, and if it has been registered by the system in the same vehicle on the same day. Our customer service representatives are always happy to discuss with you your account and any concerns you may have; please do not hesitate to contact us should you require assistance.

I hope this helps. You can find contact information for the Quickpass office at this link if you want to speak to them further.

I noticed a few video charges on my bill even though I have a transponder (same with my friends). I complained about it to them and they said they won't change it as per their stupid policy. Even though my transponder was placed in the lower left hand side of the windshield as per their instructions. I experimented a little moving it around since then and it seems it always happens in the fast lane (far left lane) and not any of the other lanes. When looking at the sensors when driving though the sensor block you can see that they are all shifted to the right. One can only presume this is to prevent the sensors on the other side from picking up the transponders from people going in the opposite direction. Quickpass needs to change their mounting instructions so that people place the transponder on the lower right hand side (not the left)....AND REFUND THOSE THAT GOT CHARGED BECAUSE THEIR TECHNOLOGY WASN'T WORKING CORRECTLY AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Hi John W,

I sent your question over to the Quickpass team and here is what they've told me.

The transponder has a built-in radio frequency (RF) detector, RF demodulator, antenna, internal battery and microcontroller. The transponder responds to a signal from the reader by reflecting and modulating the reader’s RF signal. Once activated, the transponder returns a pre-programmed code to the overhead mounted reader system antenna.

When this connection is made successfully you get the "beep".

In regards to the Transponder. What makes it beep when it passes through the overhead toll. Is the transponder using RFID and always transmitting?. Thanks

Nigel: Here's the answer from a colleague on our GEB tolling team.

The information is not yet posted anywhere, but it will be soon on our website, within the GEB section of the website. I would suggest letting them know to check in on the website periodically for this information,
as I will be working on getting this there this month.

How do I get reports of crossing data for the Golden Ears Bridge? That is, ongoing reports of how many vehicles crossed each month?
Thanks!
