Alex Dawson managed to catch some shots of the Olympic torch as it ran through Aberdeen Station yesterday!

My wife Elizabeth and I are from Australia, and living in Richmond while we’re over here on a working holiday. We commute to opposite sides of town – me on the 480 to UBC, her by train or bus to New West. On Monday night, we were txting each other status updates from our commute home. There were lineups for all trains from Waterfront, so Elizabeth got on a crowded train destined for YVR, and was going to get off at Bridgeport to change to the Richmond train. I was on the 480, about to get into Bridgeport Interchange. Changing from the 480 to the train at Bridgeport can save a few minutes, so I decided to get off and meet up with her there.

After meeting up, we decided to go out to dinner near Aberdeen, and when we got to Aberdeen, we saw preparations for the torch relay. We had no idea it was going to be there until we had arrived at the station, and we don’t usually meet up either, so it was really quite a collection of co-incidences that led to us seeing it. And a lot less stressful than it would have been if we had planned to, I’m sure!

We were standing next to a lady who said she was a friend of the torchbearer inbound to Aberdeen, and said that it had been a late substitution and her friend had only found out that morning that she was going to be in the relay.

We love it here in Vancouver. All the preparations going on for the Olympics are amazing, and it’s great to see the flame in our local neighbourhood, and how excited everyone is to be around it.
