The Massey Tunnel - bikes can shuttle through it all winter!

Big news in the world of regional cycling! The Massey Tunnel bike shuttle service will be extending its weekday operation through the wintertime, as a service trial project by the B.C. Ministry of Transportation.

If you don’t know about it, Massey Tunnel is the tunnel that connects Richmond to Delta, running four lanes of traffic under the south arm of the Fraser River. The traffic doesn’t really allow bikes to get through easily, Bike traffic is prohibited through the tunnel, so the Ministry of Transportation provides a shuttle bus service from one end to the other over the summer.

However, this year, the Ministry will be providing weekday shuttle bus service in winter as well as summer. From Oct. 14 to Apr. 24, shuttle service will continue during weekday morning and afternoon peaks, as well as Remembrance Day (Nov. 11), Good Friday (Apr. 10) and Easter Monday (Apr. 13). The increased service is a test run to encourage cycling as an alternative mode of transportation. At the end of the trial, the Ministry will examine how effective the winter shuttle is and possibly continue the service in the future.

The winter weekday shuttle schedule is below — note that while summer service has 10 shuttles a day in both directions, the winter service provides only six shuttles a day in both directions.
