Exciting news for those of you who access the Nanaimo Bus Exchange on your daily commute!

The Nanaimo Bus Exchange is more than 30 years old and serves the #25, the fifth busiest bus route on the system. Approximately 4,600 customers use the Nanaimo Bus Exchange each weekday.

As part of the TransLink Maintenance and Repair Program, Nanaimo Bus Exchange is being upgraded to improve customer safety and comfort, and to help keep our growing ridership moving.

These upgrades will allow us to increase safety with improved measures for pedestrian, cyclists, and motorists; improve transfers between bus and SkyTrain; and improve amenities and lighting for more comfort at the Exchange.

Improvements include:

  • New bus shelters, benches, and landscaping to make it a more inviting environment
  • A new plaza to reduce crowding and make it easier to transfer between bus and SkyTrain
  • Enhanced lighting and sightlines to improve safety
  • A new layout to improve pedestrian, cyclist, and motorist flow

Construction will begin in January and is expected to end in fall 2019.

To accommodate construction, the stops for the #25 and #7 will move onto the street on January 2.

All buses will continue serving the Nanaimo Bus Exchange; however, bus stops will be temporarily relocated and some service may be slightly altered.

  • Throughout construction, all bus stops will move to Nanaimo and 24th Street
  • During the first half of the project, the #7 route will be served by diesel buses. It will return to a trolley route during the second half.
  • No overnight construction is anticipated.
  • Access to the SkyTrain Station will remain open and accessible.

We thank our customers and neighbours for their patience while we improve the Nanaimo Bus Exchange.

We’re also upgrading the 22nd Street Exchange! Read about all the other improvements to our bus exchanges here as part of the Mayors’ 10-Year Vision.
