I Love Transit: 2018 I Love Transit Camp Winner announcement!

I Love Transit

Another I Love Transit week has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean the fun stops here. We are thrilled to announce our winners… yes, you read that right, WINNERS of this year’s I Love Transit Camp. Once again, so many amazing entries rolled in for this unique opportunity that we couldn’t choo choo choose just one!

This year, our theme was Connections—the future of transportation in Metro Vancouver. We asked teachers and students to unleash their inner explorer and take learning beyond the classroom. From solar-powered transit vehicles to automated buses, there were no shortage of creative ideas from these up-and-coming transit fans.

Once again, Bowinn Ma, Parliamentary Secretary for TransLink, helped us announce the winner! And this year, we had a dedicated team of TransLink judges to pick a winner.

*drumroll* The winners are…

Mr. Andrews’ Grade 4/5 class from Cape Horn Elementary School in Coquitlam! They rallied together to edit, direct and star in a fun video sharing what they love about transit as well as their vision for the future of transportation in Metro Vancouver. Here’s a summary of their written portion:

I Love Transit Camp Entry

Our class feels there will be great changes happening in the future. With the population increasing in the same amount of space (rezoned duplexes), there will be more frequent services, and more SeaBus. Because of the aging population there will be more services for HandyDART and more bus service during peak hours. The Millennium Line will expand to go out even further east. As more communities are connected, there will be an increase in bicycling with the rising fuel costs, so there will be more bike lanes put in. Beside the bike lanes there will be more nature planted like in New Westminster and Burquitlam. Far into the future, there will be underground tunnels like the Boring Company and people will be transported from one city to another in a matter of minutes. SeaBus will be replaced by faster catamarans that are super quiet to not disturb the whale population

And Ms. Szelagowicz’s Grade 3/4 class from Tomekichi Homma Elementary School in Richmond. They dedicated weeks of class time to work on an in-depth group project sharing their love about transit and future vision for the future of transportation in Metro Vancouver through pictures, poems, stories and more! Here’s a summary of their written portion.

I Love Transit Camp Entry

We would like to contribute to the future of transit by learning more at transit camp so that we can improve our models of speedy electric trains, hydro-powered buses that self-drive and submarines as well as looking at technology and safety improvements. With air traffic being used by transit in the future we would connect easily to the whole of the Lower Mainland. We, of course, would want transit to always be inclusive of wheelchair users and pet-friendly options. We are so very excited to be a part of the project and ideas for the future!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter our I Love Transit Camp contest! While we could only award two winners for I Love Transit Camp, we loved all of the entries and all of the creativity shared.

TransLink’s I Love Transit Week is now award winning!

The TransLink Social Media Team and their APTA AdWheel Award!

The TransLink Social Media Team and their APTA AdWheel Award!

We have some exciting news to share with our Buzzer blog readers and everyone who has been part of I Love Transit Week since it’s inception in 2009—it’s now award winning!

The 2017 edition of I Love Transit Week, our week-long celebration of all things public transit, won a First Place Award in the 2018 American Pubic Transportation Assocation (APTA) AdWheel Awards for Best Marketing and Communications Educational Effort (Special Event).

Steve Vanagas, TransLink's vice-president of customer communications and public affairs, accepted the award for TransLink at APTA’s 2018 Marketing & Communications Workshop in San Francisco earlier this week with JC Vannatta, Chair, APTA Marketing & Communications Committee.

Steve Vanagas, TransLink’s vice-president of customer communications and public affairs, accepted the award for TransLink at APTA’s 2018 Marketing & Communications Workshop in San Francisco earlier this week with JC Vannatta, Chair, APTA Marketing & Communications Committee.

The annual AdWheel Awards, arguably the most prestigious marketing and communications award program in public transportation, recognizes the outstanding efforts of APTA members. TransLink competed among “public transportation systems with more than 20 million annual passenger trips,” which means we were up against some of the largest public transit systems in North America!

The 2017 I Love Transit campaign, while still celebrating our love of transit, expanded to included a week of free transit on bus for kids. This year’s focus was to get youth excited to use transit, and enhance their positive perceptions and understanding of public transit.

Throughout the entire week, Oct. 2–6, K-12 students rode the bus for free and teachers were challenged to unleash their inner explorer and take learning beyond the classroom through field trips on transit. As well, two new contests were launched where classes could win DayPasses for field trips or a behind-the-scenes “I Love Transit Camp” field trip to TransLink’s operating facilities. We also added theme for the first time, Beyond—the future of transit in Metro Vancouver.

This is TransLink’s fourth AdWheel Award recognizing our social media initiatives, previously snagging three awards in 2012 for best social networking (Pet Peeves campaign, best blog (The Buzzer) and best Twitter account (@TransLink). The Pet Peeves campaign also won a prestigious Gold Quill Award of Excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators. Last year, TransLink won an AdWheel for its Evergreen Means Go campaign.

Putting I Love Transit together couldn’t have been done without the huge contributions of our larger TransLink Customer Communications and Public Affairs team…especially our good pals in TravelSmart! We’d also like to congratulate our colleagues from across North America on their APTAwins!

We’re starting to plan for I Love Transit 2018, so stay tuned for what we have in store!

I Love Transit Camp 2017: fun-filled (and educational!) days at TransLink’s facilities

I Love Transit Week’s theme this year was Beyond—the future of transportation in Metro Vancouver.

We wanted teachers and students to unleash their inner explorer and take learning beyond the classroom. So we challenged them to come up with their own vision for the future of transportation in Metro Vancouver to enter for a chance to attend I Love Transit Camp, a unique opportunity to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of TransLink’s operating facilities.
