Upgrade work continues to march forward

Construction is well underway at New Westminster Station while we upgrade the station to improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security.

Project status:

After almost a year of station upgrades, New Westminster Station upgrades will soon be complete!

Here are some highlights of the work that has taken place over the past few months:

  • The east entrance fully re-opened with an upgraded staircase and a newly replaced escalator.
  • The staircase at the south entrance reopened as work continues to reopen the escalator.
  • Work progressed on the installation of the new south entrance elevator.
  • Installation of permanent lighting in the concourse area continued; most of the ceiling is now in place.
  • Benches have been installed at the platform level.
  • Construction fencing continues to be removed.
  • Painting throughout the station is complete.

What to expect:

Our top priority is the safety of the public, passengers, employees, and contractors.

Due to the nature of construction activity, we recognize there will be impacts to the public, including noise, traffic impacts and changes to SkyTrain service and station access.

Below is a summary of the short-term work that passengers and neighbours can expect:

  • South entrance escalator to reopen.
  • Installation of the south elevator to be completed and in operation this summer.
  • Ceiling panels at the concourse and platform levels to be fully installed.
  • Permanent lighting throughout the station to be completed.
  • North entrance to fully re-open this summer with an upgraded staircase and a newly replaced escalator.
  • Noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating will continue.

Update: Commercial–Broadway station upgrades

Commercial–Broadway Station is the busiest station on the network

Upgrades to improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security at Commercial–Broadway Station, one of the busiest stations on the SkyTrain system, are well underway.

Project Status:

  • Two new columns were constructed on either side of Broadway to support the new pedestrian walkway.
  • A steel mesh wall along with the roof structure and its support columns were installed for the new Broadway platform.
  • Concrete columns were erected in the Grandview Cut to support a widened pedestrian overpass to Platforms 1 and 2.

Upcoming work means the Broadway entrance at the south stationhouse (beside CIBC) will be closed from start of service Saturday, June 18, while crews remove three fare gates to make space for construction of the expanded station entrance.

The entrance will reopen prior to start of service on Monday, June 20.

What passengers and neighbours can expect:

  • Customers can access the station from the entrance off 10th Avenue, or from the north stationhouse on the other side of Broadway.
  • SkyTrain attendants will be present on the platform, in the concourse and outside the station to help guide customers to the 10th Avenue entrance.
  • Signs will be installed to direct customers.
  • When the station entrance reopens, there will be six fare gates, two of which are accessible gates. We know that six fare gates will be more than enough for the number of passengers who use this entrance.

An update on Metrotown Station upgrade work

Have you noticed the huge steel structures being constructed outside Metrotown Station?

Over the past few weeks, crews have been constructing a massive loop truss which will be installed above the west station house – providing structural support for the station’s roof. MultivistaPhoto-2016-06-09 (1)

The loop truss is so massive, in fact, that it was shipped to the work site in four separate pieces, all of which arrived in May.

Crews have also been working on building eight columns which will support the final structure. 

Over the coming weeks, crews will continue fabricating the loop truss, and later this summer it will be hoisted into place with two separate tandem lifts.

More details to come on what this will mean for customers.

Once fully constructed, the loop truss will weigh approximately 70 tons (140,000lbs) and will be around 64.5 meters (212 feet) in length. 

A similar loop truss will be constructed and then installed in the east stationhouse.

TransLink commits more than $48 million to road and cycling projects

As you may or may not know, TransLink is much more than transit!

Did you know that TransLink is funding more than $48 million in major road and cycling projects across Metro Vancouver’s municipalities in 2016?

That’s right!

Translink has committed $9.8 million towards 16 capital improvement road and bicycle projects in 12 Metro Vancouver municipalities.

We have has also committed $38.5 million to operate, maintain and rehabilitate the regional Major Road Network (MRN).Bike infographic

The MRN is a network of more than 2,300 lane kilometres (or 600 road kilometres) of arterial roads stretching across the region that carry the bulk of the region’s commuter, transit and truck traffic.

Funds* are used by municipalities for a range of activities, from street cleaning and snow removal, maintaining streetlights, traffic signals and signs, patching potholes, and repaving.

To get the inside scoop on the MRN and other projects around the region, I spoke with one of our very own engineers, Sam Young.

What type of work do you do for TransLink?

I am a Transportation Engineer and have been with TransLink’s Infrastructure Program Management Department for about three years. We have lots of projects on the go, and I am part of a team that works closely with Metro Vancouver municipalities to fund the maintenance, operation, and upgrades to the Major Road Network, as well as upgrades to the regional cycling network. Our team also works with internal and external stakeholders to make sure that new and existing TransLink services and facilities, such as bus routes and bus exchanges, can operate safely and efficiently.

Can you tell us about how the MRN was formed?

When TransLink was formed in 1999, it became the first multi-modal transportation authority in North America responsible for not only transit within Metro Vancouver, but also cycling, roads, as well as goods movement within the region.

The MRN was born around the same time, comprising of roads across the region that were either declassified from the Province (such as Lougheed Highway and King George Highway), or uploaded from the Municipalities (such as Knight Street and Broadway). At that time, a systematic evaluation was done to assess which roads would be included as part of the MRN; but generally speaking, a Major Road would typically play a significant role in providing mobility and connectivity across our region.

If you study the MRN map closely, you’ll notice that the majority of Major Roads are important transit and goods movement corridors, link multiple municipalities and activities centers, and connect to the Provincial Highway system for travel through the region or outside the region.

What are some major projects that have been completed in years past, that readers might be able to recognize?

Some of the recently completed projects with TransLink funding include the Low Level Road Project in North Vancouver, the Powell Street Overpass Project in Vancouver, the Moody Street Overpass Upgrade Project in Port Moody, and the Fraser Highway Widening projects in Surrey and Township of Langley.

What is the benefit of these investments to each municipality?

Not many people know this, but TransLink also provides funding towards the day to day operation and maintenance of the MRN, including snow removal activities, street cleaning, pavement maintenance such as patching of potholes as well as sidewalk and bike lane maintenance.

MRN: by the numbers

  • The MRN is approximately 2,360 lane-km in length, which is long enough to stretch from Vancouver to San Diego!
  • In addition, TransLink also owns and maintains a portion of the MRN. The MRN extends through three TransLink owned bridges (Golden Ears Bridge, Knight Street Bridge, Pattullo Bridge), as well as Golden Ears Way. There are over 200,000 vehicle crossings on these TransLink bridges every day.
  • When the MRN was formed in 1999, it was only about 2,200 lane-km in length. About 30% of this original network consisted of declassified Provincial roadways. Over the years, the MRN size has increased due to additional major roads being added, road widening projects, and intersection improvement projects such as new turn lanes.
  • There are over 1,000 traffic signals on the MRN alone – the funding TransLink provides also goes towards the operation and maintenance of signals. The replacement of these signals systems occur when they reach the end of their useful lives. Same goes for street lights!

Update: Joyce–Collingwood station upgrades

If you use Joyce–Collingwood SkyTrain station as much as the rest of the region (it’s the fourth busiest station outside of downtown, you know!) you may have noticed that upgrade construction has begun!

So, what does this improved design give you?

Upgrades include a new elevator, up and down escalators in the East stationhouse, better lighting and visibility and better integration of the transit system into the Joyce–Collingwood community.

Project status

Beginning May 7, the east station entrance will close and work will begin to construct a new elevator and up and down escalators.

The east entrance will remain closed until upgrades are complete in fall 2017, when the project is expected to be complete.

What to expect

Our top priority is the safety of the public, passengers, employees and contractors.

Due to the nature of construction activity, we recognize there will be impacts to the public, including noise, traffic impacts and changes to SkyTrain service and station access.

Below is a summary of what customers can expect during this upgrade work:

  • During this time, customers can access the station through the west station entrance on the other side of Joyce Street.
  • Customers will be able to use the new temporary staircase to exit east stationhouse (exit only, no entry access permitted).
  • Signs will be in place to direct customers to appropriate entrances and exits.
  • Noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating will continue.

Significant detours on the #49 bus between West Boulevard and Dunbar Street

The #49 will detour from May 2-Sept 5 2016

The 49 will detour from Monday, May 2 to September 2016

As the warm, summery months draw near, many construction and road rehabilitation projects around the region will take place that may have an impact on your commute.

From May until September 2016, the City of Vancouver will be replacing the sewer main and rehabilitating the roadway along Southwest Marine Drive.

This project requires a full closure of Southwest Marine Drive from Granville Street to Camosun Street, which will affect service of the 49 Metrotown Station/Dunbar/UBC route between 49th Avenue and West Boulevard and 41st Avenue and Dunbar Street.

Effective Monday, May 2, the 49 will be re-routed and no longer service stops along:

  • 49th Avenue between West Boulevard and SW Marine Drive;
  • SW Marine Drive between 49thAvenue and Dunbar Street; and
  • Dunbar Street between SW Marine Drive and 41st Avenue.

The 49 will now route off 49th Avenue via West Boulevard and 41st Ave (Westbound direction) and 41st Avenue and East Boulevard (Eastbound direction).

There are no direct impacts to the 41, 43 and 480; however, there may be increased traffic congestion along the 41st Avenue, potentially causing some delays.

Stopping procedures during detour

The 49 will run express – between East Boulevard and Dunbar Street, along 41st Avenue and East and West Boulevards– not providing local service along its detour routing (no pick up/drop off) so that it stays reliable and for our customers and delays are kept to a minimum.

There will be two additional temporary stops to minimize travel distances for passengers:

  • Last Stop Westbound (prior to express section) – #51018 (Northbound West Boulevard far side W 49th Avenue)
  • Last Stop Eastbound (prior to express section) – #60745 (Eastbound W 41st Avenue far side Alma Street)

The Southwest Marine Drive Upgrades Project is estimated to be completed by September 2016.

  • Wednesday, April 20 – Vancouver 420;  bus route detours in effect from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m

Ongoing construction will continue on the City of Vancouver’s Burrard Corridor Project, so please allow extra travel time if commuting over the Burrard Bridge.

Spring into Service Changes!

You know the drill!

Four times a year (spring, summer, fall and winter), we adjust transit service across the region to make our network more efficient and provide service where it is needed most.

This spring’s service changes are extra exciting!

Why you might ask?

Because we are implementing changes that were consulted on during the 2015 Transit Network Review.

Highlights of the 2016 spring service changes include: 

  • Seasonal service changes on routes serving post-secondary institutions to reflect decreased demand following the completion of the winter semester and through the spring/summer months.
  • An additional bus service on routes 104, 340, 388 and 410 to increase service reliability and reduce congestion associated with the Pattullo Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
  • Service changes to community shuttles C3, C4, C8, C9, C19 and C20 in New Westminster and Vancouver-UBC as recommended in the 2015 Transit Network Review. These changes increase service reliability, reduce overcrowding and improve direct connections to key destinations.

After almost a year of station upgrades at New Westminster Station, we’re in the home stretch!

With summer 2016 just around the corner there are only a few more months until the New Westminster Station upgrades are complete.

The upgrades to the station will improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security.

Some of the benefits of this construction are the replacement elevator and escalators, improved lighting and signage, glass panels to improve station visibility from street level and better integration with the surrounding community to make it easier to connect to and from the SkyTrain system.

  • Mesh screens were replaced with new glass panels on platforms.

Burrard Corridor upgrades

The affected area – City of Vancouver

Over the next 18 months, the City of Vancouver will be doing major upgrades to the Burrard Corridor – from Davie Street to 16th Avenue – which includes necessary structural rehabilitation work on the Burrard Bridge.

Work has commenced between Harwood Street and Pacific Street, where they will be replacing aging water, sewer and road infrastructure and improving safety for all modes at the Burrard–Pacific intersection.

This work will impact bus routes that normally travel on and around the Burrard Bridge.

Affected routes include the 2, 4, 22, 32, 44, 258 & N22.

Please allow extra time if travelling either direction on these routes.

What to expect during construction

  • One travel lane in each direction that will stay open on Burrard Street on the north side
  • Some full road closures on weekends on the South side to allow for major roadwork and final paving
  • Access for cyclist, pedestrian, and motor vehicle over the Burrard Bridge

Throughout the course of the construction, we will monitor service reliability and make service adjustments/changes as necessary.

As you’ve probably noticed, upgrades at Commercial–Broadway Station are well underway!

Upgrades will improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security at one of the busiest stations on the SkyTrain system.

What’s happening now

Construction for the new pedestrian walkway over Broadway continues.

Since January 21, 2016 crews have relocated utilities and work to build the support columns begins in early March.

These activities require lane and sidewalk closures and will impact bus stop locations for the 9 and 99 B-Line, as well as pedestrian traffic flow.

What to expect

Our top priority is the safety of the public, passengers, employees, and contractors. Due to the nature of the construction, we recognize there will be impacts to the public, including noise, traffic impacts and changes to SkyTrain service and station access.

Beginning February 29, 2016 and continuing until the summer, the westbound 9/N9 and 99 B-Line bus stops at Commercial–Broadway Station will move while we build support columns for the new pedestrian walkway over Broadway.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • The westbound 9/N9 bus stop will move to the other side of Commercial Drive and the 99 B-Line bus stop will move to where the 9 bus stop used to be.
  • Additional signage will be installed to help direct customers to their bus stop.
  • Temporary queuing lines will be painted onto the sidewalks to help manage lineups.
  • Noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating, will continue.

Hello Buzzer Blog readers – although you may have seen a few of my posts already, I am excited to be officially introduced to all of you!

I joined the TransLink communications team in October last year, and I will hopefully be posting to the blog and interacting with all of you on a regular basis.

I hate to admit it, but prior to joining TransLink my exposure and knowledge about transit was fairly limited. The past few months have been quite exciting for me; having this opportunity to learn about all things transit has been a great experience.

I grew up in a small community in BC’s northern interior with a pretty dismal transit system (which I never used), and after moving to North Vancouver three years ago – I still drove my car a lot.

How times have changed! I live in Vancouver and take transit everywhere – I haven’t driven my car in over a year. I can now say that I fully appreciate how incredible (and complex) Metro Vancouver’s integrated transit network really is.

I am excited to share new stories with all of you and keeping you in the know on TransLink projects and initiatives.

First phase of running rail replacement work complete!

You may have noticed in the past few months that the Expo Line has been undergoing some major maintenance work!

As part of that maintenance, we have been replacing major sections of rail along the 30 year old track.

The first phase of the work began last August and has just been completed – replacing 4,550 linear metres of rail at three locations.

Here’s what has been replaced so far:

  • 700 linear metres of rail along the outbound curve east of Edmonds Station
  • 950 linear metres of rail along the inbound curve west of Edmonds Station
  • 2,900 linear metres of rail along the S-curve between Commercial–Broadway and Main Street –Science World stations.

We will be continuing the rail replacement work this summer.

This work is critical to keeping our system in a good state of repair.

We have partnered with Shaw Communications to provide strong WiFi connectivity for our SeaBus customers and – the best part is – this service improvement is being made with no cost to taxpayers!

Following the initial launch of Shaw Go WiFi in our SeaBus terminals, this partnership will also see Shaw Go WiFi installed on all TransLink SeaBuses in the coming months.

Passengers who are not Shaw customers can enjoy Shaw Go WiFi access by selecting ‘ShawGuest’ from the list of available WiFi settings, and following the on-screen instructions to connect. All Shaw Internet customers have complimentary access to all SeaBus hot spots as part of their subscription.

We understand that customers want a fast and reliable WiFi connection when they ride transit, and this is a step we are taking to improve our customers’ experience with our services.

SkyTrain turns 30 today!… (Whaaaaaat?)


Flashback Friday: a SkyTrain promo video from 1984 

Today, on a sunny winter day 30 years ago, Premier Bill Bennett proudly announced the opening of SkyTrain – forever changing the face of transit for Metro Vancouver – crazy, huh?

SkyTrain bursts through a banner on its very first day in service: Dec 11, 1985!

The inauguration of SkyTrain was huge – so huge in fact, that there were three events in one day (lucky!).

Following the opening ceremony at Waterfront Station, the first SkyTrain car was radioed to the platform, broke through a ceremonious ribbon and then continued its maiden voyage – attending two more celebrations – one at Metrotown Station and the other at New Westminster Station.

The original line – named Expo Line – was a legacy project of Expo ’86 and connected downtown Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster. Passengers then had the ability to travel from Waterfront Station to New Westminster Station in just 25 minutes – half the time it would have taken to travel by bus!

Following the December 11, 1985 inauguration, SkyTrain entered free service—the system was launched with huge fanfare and eight days of free rides, before officially going into paid service on January 3, 1986.

Over the coming decades, Metro-Vancouver’s rapid transit system would see exponential growth with extensions to the Expo Line, the creation of the Millennium Line, the addition of the Canada Line and our soon to be Evergreen Extension (an extension of the Millennium Line).

Let’s look at some of our major milestones in the last 30 years:

  • 1986 SkyTrain opens for regular revenue service
  • 1989 – 1994 – three Expo Line expansion projects built – adding service to Surrey with King George Station as the terminus station.
  • 2002 – Millennium Line officially opens – operating along the Expo Line to New Westminster Station and adding new service between Columbia Station and Commercial-Broadway.
  • 2006 – Millennium Line service is extended to its current terminus station, VCC-Clark.
  • 2009 – Canada Line opens connecting downtown Vancouver with Richmond and YVR airport.
  • 2017 – The Evergreen extension of the Millennium Line, connecting Coquitlam and Port Moody, through Burnaby, to Vancouver with a one seat ride, is scheduled to open.

From a modest 22 kilometres track carrying roughly 50,000 passengers a day to 15 stations, SkyTrain has grown to a mammoth rapid transit system. We now operate 68 kilometres of track with 47 stations and transport roughly 250, 000 passengers per day, AND when the Evergreen Extension opens, we will have the longest fully automated rapid transit network in the world – with 79  kilometres of track and 53 stations.
