Our new report highlights the success story of our entire region in 2019

We just released the 2019 Transit Service Performance Review (TSPR)! This is basically a report card on transit service. It provides a comprehensive review of ridership and service productivity for bus, SeaBus, SkyTrain, West Coast Express and HandyDART.

By using the data in the TSPR we can identify opportunities to reduce overcrowding, improve performance and reliability and meet the needs of our customers as the region continues to grow.

Given the significant impact of COVID-19 on our ridership in 2020, we are now facing an entirely new set of circumstances. While the data provided by the report is less relevant for immediate planning purposes, the 2019 TSPR will be instrumental as we map out our blueprint for ridership recovery in 2020 and beyond.  Read more »

Today, we released the findings of the 2017 Transit Network Performance Review (TSPR), which is like a report card on transit service!

New this year is an interactive TSPR dashboard and mapping tool! Make sure you check it out. It provides new types of data and allows users to explore it in a more intuitive way. The dashboard includes all of the route-level data reported in the previous TSPRs, and the mapping tool includes data down to individual bus stops.

Needless to say, there’s a wealth of information in the TSPR. That’s why we wanted to pull out some interesting lists for you!

Now, you’re probably thinking, “Wow, our transit system is really busy!” It sure is.

Investments in Phase One of the 10-Year Vision helped propel ridership to record heights. Not only was it a record year for Metro Vancouver transit in 2017 with 407 million boardings across the system, ridership last month smashed records. System-wide, ridership was up 9 per cent in May over the same month last year.

More improvements are already on the way as part of Phase One.

The 25, 100 and 319 routes, which are among the top 10 most-crowded routes in 2017, are receiving service increases to reduce overcrowding.

Eighty new SkyTrain cars will start arriving early next year. These new cars will increase capacity by about 10 per cent for Expo Line, 23 per cent for Millennium Line and 30 per cent for Canada Line. That equates to a total of 8,200 additional spaces per peak hour on both directions on all three SkyTrain lines!

If approved, the Phase Two Investment Plan will unlock even more new funding. Customers will see new Phase Two Plan transit services as early as 2019.

New investments making transit more frequent, comfortable and reliable

Today, we’re releasing the findings of the 2017 Transit Network Performance Review (TSPR), which is like a report card on transit service! It’s an annual comprehensive review of ridership and service productivity for bus, SeaBus, SkyTrain and West Coast Express.

What’s special about 2017’s TSPR is its the first since we began implementing improvements outlined in Phase One of the Mayors’ Council’s 10-Year Vision. These investments helped propel Metro Vancouver transit to a record year with 407 million boardings across the system, a 5.7 per cent increase over the previous year!

The TSPR gives us valuable information to plan a better transit system. The 2015 review helped TransLink develop the Phase One Investment Plan in 2016, and the 2017 review shows these changes are working:

  • Bus: Overcrowding has dropped 13 per cent on 18 overcrowded routes after additional service was added.
  • SeaBus: Increased frequency helped boost weekday evening ridership by 34 per cent and Saturday morning ridership by 35 per cent.
  • SkyTrain: Average weekday boardings were up 12.5 per cent in the fall following capacity increases. Capacity was boosted on Expo and Millennium Lines (2.5 per cent on weekdays and 12 per cent on weekends) and Canada Line (11 per cent on weekdays).

West Coast Express saw a ridership decline of 5.5 per cent. This is due to a change in customer behaviour following the opening of the Millennium Line Evergreen Extension, which prompted Port Moody and Coquitlam customers to move to SkyTrain.

The 2017 TSPR shows improvements are still needed. The 25, 100 and 319 routes, which are among the top 10 most-crowded routes in 2017, are receiving service increases made available through Phase One of the 10-Year Vision to reduce overcrowding.

Once approved, Phase 2 of the 10-Year Vision unlocks even more new funding. This report will shape how these new resources can be applied to further reduce crowding, increase frequency and expand to new areas.

2016 Transit Service Performance Review: what are the top five routes in your area?

Last week, TransLink released the 2016 Transit Service Performance Review, a comprehensive look at ridership and service productivity for bus, SeaBus, SkyTrain and West Coast Express.

We know there’s tons of information in there to wade through so we’re back this week to share with you a couple more tidbits about boardings from the report!

What is a boarding?  A boarding is considered each time a passenger enters a fare paid zone using Compass fare media or any other proof of payment.

Record numbers for the first half of 2017 puts TransLink on track for a record-breaking year!

With over 200 million boardings across the region for the first half of 2017 and more than 1.26 million average weekday boardings in the first three months of this year, it’s no surprise that TransLink is on track for record-breaking ridership!

We saw a 5.7 per cent increase this half of the year compared to the same period last year!

Ridership numbers from January 1 to June 30, 2017

  • SkyTrain: 74 million boardings (+ 11.9 per cent compared to same period in 2016)
  • Bus: 122.5 million boardings (+ 2.5 per cent compared to same period in 2016)
  • SeaBus: 2.7 million boardings (+ 5.7 per cent compared to same period in 2016)
  • West Coast Express: 1.2 million boardings (- 6.1 per cent compared to same period in 2016)

“This increase in ridership is great news, and builds on the growth we saw in 2016. It’s great to see people taking advantage of new service we started putting on the road in January,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “I’m thrilled we’re in a position to continue adding even more transit service in coming months, including in September one of our largest single increases to bus service since the run-up to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.”

10-Year Vision

The addition of new transit service in 2017 as part of delivering on the 10-Year Vision is one of the driving attributes in this year’s boost in ridership. Since the beginning of 2017, we have added 89,000 bus service hours, focusing on the region’s most congested areas. Fall service changes coming this September will include the addition of new bus routes and will be the largest expansion since 2010 when we hosted the Olympic Winter Games! The Transit Service Performance Review is one of the tools that we use to direct change.

The data collected from the TSPR gives us valuable insights on boardings, ridership, transit trends and more. This data helps us identify opportunities to reduce overcrowding, improve performance and reliability and meet the needs of our customers as the region continues to grow.

Did you know? We gather data from multiple sources such as fare gates at SkyTrain stations and SeaBus terminals, automated passenger counter units on buses and Compass Card validators.

Increasing Ridership

We had record ridership in 2016, with 384.8 million boardings. This represents a 4.5 per cent increase over the previous year!

Ridership growth in 2016 was the largest since 2010, when the region hosted the Olympic Winter Games. This growth was likely due to strong economic activity, an increase in transit service hours and the launch of Compass Card.

The annual review shows that ridership across the system continues to grow:

  • Bus ridership continued to increase throughout the day, particularly during evenings and on Saturdays
  • Bus boardings increased 4.6 per cent to 239.6 million
  • All three SkyTrain lines experienced ridership growth. Canada Line boardings grew by 5.5 per cent, while boardings on the Expo and Millennium Lines grew by 4.1 per cent
  • Evergreen Extension stations saw steady ridership over their first four weeks of service, despite record snowfall

Did you know? System-wide ridership is measured in boardings and journeys. A boarding is considered each time a passenger enters a fare paid zone using Compass fare media or any other proof of payment. A journey is a complete transit trip using Compass fare media or any other proof of payment, regardless of the number of transfers.

Other trends identified during the 2016 Transit Service Performance Review include:

  • South of Fraser led all Metro Vancouver sub-regions in ridership growth – seeing a 10 per cent increase over the previous year. Much of this growth can be attributed to increased ridership of the 96 B-Line
  • With its 4.3 million annual boardings, up 15 per cent over 2015, the 96 B-Line had the largest increase in annual boardings of any route in the system
  • SeaBus boardings declined by 2.8 per cent in 2016, due to lower summer ridership. However, if SeaBus were a bus route, it would still rank as having the 11th highest boardings in all of Metro Vancouver

The Transit Service Performance Review results are in!

Today, we released the findings of the 2015 Transit System Performance Review (TSPR), a comprehensive review of ridership and service productivity for bus, SeaBus, SkyTrain and West Coast Express.

FYI: This is the first year the review has expanded beyond bus!

The TSPR gives us valuable information on boardings, ridership, transit trends and more. By monitoring services and ridership, we can respond to changing demands with available resources.

“The Transit Service Performance Review demonstrates how we are actively monitoring the transit system across Metro Vancouver to improve our performance. We know where we need to reduce overcrowding, improve travel speed and respond to changing customer demands,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “The 2014 Mayors’ Council Vision sets out a blue print to tackle these needs and with sustainable investment, we can take action.” 

Increasing Ridership

We had record ridership across the system in 2015 with 364 million boardings – that’s our highest ever!

Boardings remained high despite decreased per-capita service hours and slower bus speeds.

The annual review shows that ridership across the system continues to grow:

  • Total system-wide boardings increased 2.1 per cent and total bus boardings increased 2.8 per cent, year-over-year. SkyTrain passenger volumes at Canada, Expo and Millennium line stations have also increased by up to 28 per cent.
  • West Coast Express and SeaBus ridership remains steady. In 2015 there were 6.1 million recorded boardings on SeaBus; if it were a bus route, it would rank tenth highest in annual boardings!

Other trends identified during the 2015 Transit Service Performance Review include:

  • Bus boardings in all sub-regions continue to grow or remain stable
  • Some bus routes have consecutive years of growth in boardings, contrary to system-wide trend
  • Almost half of bus revenue hours with chronic overcrowding occur outside weekday peak periods
  • SkyTrain passenger volumes continue to increase
  • Weekend passenger volumes on SkyTrain are similar to weekday volumes outside of peak periods

What happens next?

Knowing how our transit system performs helps to ensure that we are responding to changing customer demand with available resources and lays the foundation for future investment. The data from the TSPR shows us the need for transit investment in our region is high.

Transit ridership across the system continues to grow despite decreased service hours and service speed. The 2014 Mayors’ Council Vision sets out a blue print to tackle these needs and with sustainable investment we can take action. We are currently developing the 10-year Investment Plan which supports the 2014 Mayors’ Council Vision.

Based on the findings from the review, we’ve strategically allocated available resources to improve the experience for our customers:

  • 15,000 revenue service hours were reallocated from bus routes with low demand to routes where customers need them most
  • Service frequencies were increased to reduce overcrowding on a number of routes, including the 49, 100 and C23 in Vancouver; C28 in the Northeast Sector; 335 and 351 in the South of Fraser; and 403 and 410 in Richmond.
  • Improvements were also made to the NightBus network to provide extended service hours and increased frequency.

Did you know?

Thirty per cent of trips on the system involve a multi-modal transfer (almost all are bus to SkyTrain transfers).

SkyTrain ridership at individual stations has grown by up to 28 per cent. The stations where ridership is growing the fastest are Canada Line stations that have experienced significant redevelopment, including:

  • Olympic Village (driven by new, mixed-used development)
  • Templeton (driven by new, McArthur Glen outlet mall)
  • Marine Gateway (driven by new, mixed-use development adjacent to the station)
