Post-secondary students get in free to the APTA rail conference, June 6-9
Post-secondary students get in free to the APTA rail conference, June 6-9
We’re hosting the American Public Transportation Association’s rail conference at the Hyatt in downtown Vancouver from June 6-9, and this year, post-secondary students can attend for free!
Why you should attend if you can (seriously)
This conference is a huge opportunity if you’re into transit or planning. Why?
- You’ll meet hundreds of transit professionals from North America and beyond
- You can attend educational and technical sessions about the latest rail issues and technologies, plus updates from tons of agencies on how their rail systems are developing, including our own (here’s the full program and the schedule at a glance)
- You can go on behind-the-scenes tours of our own transit system (tours are planned for SeaBus, SkyTrain, Canada Line, and more)
- You can attend the International Rail Rodeo from June 3-6
- The last time this conference was held in Vancouver was over 10 years ago (ie: this doesn’t come here very often!)
- Non-APTA members pay a fee of $1125 US to attend — but you’ll get in free!
Seriously: I went to the conference in Chicago last year, and it was a huge learning opportunity as well as a great way to get to know people in the industry. See my conference posts from last year — I got to try a train simulator and more!
How to register (and a call for submissions :)
To register, all you need to do is fill out a registration form, attach a valid student ID and fax it to 202-496-4331. Never mind that, the pre-registration deadline was actually May 27!
So just come to the APTA registration desk at the conference on the day you want to attend (it’s the Balmoral Room on the third floor of the Hyatt Regency) and bring your completed registration form and your valid student I.D. The registration desk is open at the following times:
Saturday, June 5 – 1 – 5 p.m.
Sunday, June 6 – 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Monday, June 7 – 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tuesday, June 8 – 7 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, June 9 – 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
To register for the rail rodeo, bring your form & valid student ID to the rodeo registration room (the Garibaldi Room in the Fairmont, 900 West Georgia Street). Registration is open on Wed June 2 (7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and on Thu June 3 (6:45 a.m. – 7:45 a.m.). See the rail rodeo schedule and handbook for more about the rodeo.
If you plan to attend, let me know! I’d love to say hello. Also, if you’re attending a session and have some good notes and pictures, I would love to share them on the Buzzer blog for all to enjoy. Let me know and we can coordinate!
What time is the event?
What I wanted to say was what time is the behind-the-scenes tours of Skytrain, Canada Line and Seabus?
Hmm, this looks rather interesting, actually… I’ll look into scheduling this in (I’m a post-secondary student so i won’t be out 1.1k), and I’ll let you know, Jhen! When is the registration deadline?
Ric: Looks like Monday the 7th and Tuesday the 8th from 2-5 pm.
Hmm… no one mentioned a registration deadline. I’ll send a note over and ask.
Lucky students! Too bad I’m not one! Kinda interesting that APTA only has American (i.e. from USA) in the official title. Perhaps they should change it to North American Public Transit Association(NAPTA) since from their website it seems that there are Canadian members, too!
I’m a student, and would this qualify for this event.
Does this mean I might be able to attend the SkyTrain rodeo after all?
I just graduated high school so… does that mean I get in for free? Awesome, count me in!
I’m a post-secondary student but since I’m not taking summer classes does this mean I cannot attend for free?
Getting in free is there any restrictions to which events students can attend or are we allowed to attend what ever we are interested in? If so I am sure going to be in! Oh and is there a limit on the number of students they are giving these free passes to?
I don’t attend post second…..so looks like ill b sneaking in in the backdoor :p lol
Aw man. Too much $$$.
Dan T: Garrr—well, the APTA folks have told me that the pre-registration deadline is May 27, which was in fact yesterday. But all this means is that you have to register in person at the registration room on the day you want to attend the conference. Bring a completed conference form and your valid student ID! I’ll amend the post to reflect this.
Cliff, Bryan, Mark, Jim: here’s the full description of the post-secondary student access to the conference, from page 11 of the conference program.
So, as long as you have a valid post-secondary student ID, and you have completed the registration form, you are allowed to attend the conference. There is no limit on the number of students who can attend.
As for restrictions on what you can attend: the description lists that you can only go to “educational/technical sessions, the Rail Rodeo, and technical tours.” This likely excludes APTA committee meetings and the meal functions.
Btw, to register for the rail rodeo, come in-person with your form & valid student ID to the registration room at the Fairmont in Garibaldi Room. Here’s the rail rodeo schedule, which shows the times that registration is open.
Are students allowed to go on the behind-the-scenes tour for skytrain, canada line and seabus?
What is the definition of local with regard to the conference? I attend UAlberta – certainly post secondary, questionably local though.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say it probably doesn’t matter.
I’m willing to bet students from all over including Seattle and Portland will probably be attending.
Acco: I’m going to get someone from APTA to get me an answer, but in the meantime, unofficially, I think Cliff is on the right track there.
Wow, if I’m able to take Monday or Tuesday off I’d definitely go to either the SkyTrain or Canada Line tours…
@Jhen, so basically all of these tours run a single session simultaneously for 3 hours, so it’s not possible to complete one tour and then go on another in the same day?
Tsushima: doesn’t look like it. Seems like there’s 5 simultaneous tours on Mon & Tue, so you can only do one and then another the next day.
Acco: Confirmed—all university students are allowed to attend!
Is there any chance that another one of these events is going to be held in Vancouver? I’ve always wanted to see how the Skytrains worked!
Anton: as mentioned, the last APTA rail conference was held in Vancouver over 10 years ago… so I don’t think we’ll be holding it here in the near future :(
