Tidbits and links! If you have any to suggest, or a photo to showcase on these posts, e-mail me at thebuzzer@translink.ca! I’m especially in need of good photos to showcase.
- A practical use for a fake bus stop. (via Kottke)
- Slate’s Nimblest Cities series on urban transportation concluded with two really interesting articles: one on narrow cars, smart buses, and bike stations, and a look through the rest of the suggestions provided by the public.
- Longtime Buzzer reader Stefan has started his own blog tracing the history of transit routes in the region! Check out From 1 Fairview to N35 SFU: the post about the history of the 17 UBC is a great read.
- John Calimente at Regarding Place has a great item on the 1962 rail plan for Vancouver.
- Jarrett Walker asks what does transit do about traffic congestion? over at Human Transit.
- Hey, you can see the BC Electric Observation Car at 3 minutes into this video! (thanks Dave2)
- The BBC posts about manners on London transit. (thanks Ryan)
- A few posts back, Jack shared this link with old-school pictures of SkyTrain.
- It’s always interesting to look transit situations across the country (or at least how their local media is talking about them). Here’s a Star editorial suggesting ways to fund transit in Greater Toronto, an item about the TTC consultation process for expropriated property, an article about the TTC exploration of open fare technology, and an article about the TTC possibly installing cell phone access in its subway. In Ottawa, transit is apparently the top identified issue for voters. In Waterloo, the province of Ontario has provided funding for rapid transit, while Hamilton waits to hear whether they get more funding. And in Niagara Falls, they’re taking steps toward a regional transit system.
- A story on the much-lauded Curitiba bus system from CNN.
- Shopping along the new Edmonton LRT line!
- YVR Connections has a video of the airport packed full during the Olympics.
