Contest: name our future electronic fare card!
Contest: name our future electronic fare card!
Edit, 1:35 p.m.: added one of the promotional videos above! There’s a second video here too.
Starting today, Tuesday, October 12, 2010, you can enter our contest to name our future electronic fare card!
As you may know, TransLink is putting an electronic fare card system in place by 2013, similar to fare payment systems in London and Hong Kong. But tomorrow’s fare card needs a name today—so we’re asking you to put your thinking caps on and get involved!
Submit your suggestions through our online form or via text message (text CONTEST, your name, and your idea to 77777).
The winner gets an iPad, and in 2013, the winner will also receive an electronic fare card loaded with a year of free transit!
For more, check out the TransLink website to learn about electronic fare cards and the project timeline. And here’s the past Buzzer blog posts on the topic:
Seattle already grabbed the “Orca Card” name last year, that would have been a good one.
Does the name really have to start with the alphabet “O” for ours too? :P Seattle ORCA, London Oyster, Hong Kong Octopus…….btw, one entry per person?
No, we are not bound to give it a name beginning with an “O,” though that certainly seems to be the trend in some cities :)
You can enter as many times as you like, too!

When this new program comes into place, how do we pay for West Coast Express fares?
I guess this works just like a Tim Horton’s card. Load it with cash, swipe it, boom!!! ;D
It will be effective and practical as well as bettement for improving and developing Transit smart.
[…] 2013, TransLink will launch a new electronic fare system that would allow it to charge riders only for the distance they actually travel, rather than by […]
Ric: You would pay your West Coast Express fare using the electronic fare card.
How will it work on buses? Will the fare box itself be changed, a smart-card sensor attached to it or some other method?
Jimbo: We haven’t picked a supplier yet, so I can’t speak with complete certainty about how the final system will work. But generally, the buses will have some kind of pad or tagging point where you’ll tap your card as you board.
This page for the Oyster Card shows the pad on the buses (scroll about halfway down) http://oystercard.110mb.com/equipment.htm
It would be nice if the entry form allowed us to give a brief argument explaining why we chose the name we chose.
Tessa: Sorry about that! Though feel free to share it here if you like :)
How about “The Flip Card.” As in “I Flip for transit”
I like GoCard (or Go Card), even if it is in use already. Sure student cards couldn’t be called that anymore, but whatever.
Sheba: Oddly enough, the GoCard is the name of the electronic fare card for TransLink in Australia! http://www.translink.com.au/go.php
I know – I looked at the Wiki link Chris posted.
I still like GoCard.
I like the westcoast card.
PRE$TO works really well for the TOronTO area. Very clever as it has TO in is, incorporates a $ sign and the action (Press your card to a scanner)

it would be nice fare card with picture.
On cold or snow day bus driver shold be more frindly with people.
Late idea: How about something like Chinook Pass? Very West-coast.
Strelagora: Sadly, as you’ve alluded to, you are beyond the deadline! I think that name did get entered into the contest though.
Hey.
Was a name for the card decided ? I tried to find any information but i couldn’t find.
Not yet, they are shortlisting the submitted names now. Stay tuned!
