Donated: a 1929 Buzzer and some classic tickets!
Just want to point out something I got a while back: a 1929 Buzzer! It actually describes the discovery of an old document showing the state of Vancouver in 1898, which the Buzzer considered hilarious ancient history. Download a PDF of the full Buzzer here to read all the details!
For background: Bob Hassan kindly sent this Buzzer along to me—it was part of his father’s collection, which Bob received when his father passed away.
I asked Bob if he could tell us a bit about his father, and Bob said that his dad was named Harold Hassan, and was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1906. He moved to Vancouver in 1910, and spent the rest of his life here. He was interested in everything, loved to save things, and had a fantastic memory: eventually he was president of the BC Pioneers historic association. And because Harold could never drive a car because of his eyesight, that’s why he had transit items in his collection.
Bob also sent along a couple of transit tickets his father had saved: here they are!
Thanks again to Bob for sending this along! If anyone else happens to find an old Buzzer in their holdings and you don’t know what do with it, please do send it in to TransLink: just write to the attention of the Buzzer editor, 1600 – 4720 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC V5H 4N2. We love collecting this sort of thing in our archives!
I found out that the 1995 C40 buses are reaching the end of their lease at the end of February. The buses are currently put up for sale. Hopefully they can be sold.
If they can’t find a buyer are they going to be scrapped at the end of their lease?
Ric where did you get this info about the C40’s (3258 – 3281) they just had brand new diesel engines put in to these like 4 years ago at almost $80,000 each. even though they are high floors that would be a complete waste of tax payers money as well if they were suddenly “scrapped” we need more buses not fewer. i say keep them and use them for school trippers and such.
Old guy, I found this information on the CPTDB website. Here is a link to where I got the information:

By the way there are replacements for these buses. There are currently 15 or so 1996 D40LF low floors that are currently in “storage” (not in use) at OTC. These buses will be transferred to the North Van garage when the C40s reach the end of their lease. In fact a few of these low floors have already been transferred to the North Van garage. In fat I was just on one of them yesterday.
Ah I wondered what those 96 D40LFs were doing up here in North Van! Man I hate those things. But, a crummy bus is better than no bus. :)
I was under the impression that the refurbished C40s would be in service for at least another 2 years.
Reva, Ric, oldguy: I’ve asked CMBC procurement and I’m told the buses are indeed for sale.
Bear in mind that these are also high floor buses and so not in keeping with our accessibility standards!
Hopefully, the C40s can be sold and finds a new home and owner. If they can’t be sold what is going to be the end result for them? Are they just going to be scrapped?
Ric: Yes, typically if we can’t find a buyer for our older buses, they will be scrapped after retirement so some value can be recovered.
@Jhenifer I keep hearing that CMBC is “leasing” these coaches. If I remember correctly hat BC Transit & BC Gas bought these coaches in 1995 (The Taxpayers) Then in 1999 these were all transfered over to CMBC/Translink then they sat in storage for at least 4 years then they were converted into diesels and repainted. It seems like a bit of a waste. And in Fact does CMBC/TransLink own these coaches now?
How much would these buses sell for? Would they appear on eBay? I think these vehicles would be the perfect the ultimate transit buff collectible. Although one would need to be mechanically capable to keep them on the road.
Anyone want some pieces of BC Ferry?

Jhenifer:
Thanks to your contributor for the old Buzzer.
You’ll notice on page 2 that they were soliciting a new masthead design for the Buzzer. Sounds like part of your job, only some 80 years before you!

;-), $372500/25=14900 per bus. Thats less than a toyota van. If you think about it, it is actually a good deal.
Exactly…. you just need to be mechanically inclined to keep it running. Otherwise, they would be a great shelter in the event of an earthquake having it sit on your driveway.
Did the C40 buses end up getting sold?
@Ric: Yes, 6 of them went to Alberta.
