Today is big day for transit in Metro Vancouver and all across British Columbia!
Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau and B.C. Premier Christy Clark have announced that they have signed an agreement resulting in more than $900 million being invested – by the Government of Canada, British Columbia and municipalities – in public transit projects across the province.
So, what does this mean for transit in your community?
Take a look at the plan for the first phase of investment in our region:
Metro Vancouver TransLink Phase 1 of Investing in Canada includes:
- The purchase of additional SkyTrain vehicles for the Expo, Millennium, and Canada Lines
- A new West Coast Express locomotive
- A new SeaBus
- Upgrades to SkyTrain stations
- Design and planning for Rapid Transit South of Fraser and the Millennium Line Extension along Broadway
(From the office of the B.C. Premier)
You can read the press releases from the TransLink Mayors’ Council, the province and the Federal government.

Good news! I hope overall transit and traffic improves in Metro Vancouver. Thanks, JT!
Does this mean that the Burrard Beaver is being replaced as well? Burrard Beaver II? Every 10 minutes All Day? 15 minutes on Sunday all year? A new Rapid Transit to Chilliwack? What happened to the 80% added Nightbuses? The old Olympic Line? And SkyTrain to UBC?!?!
Hi Kelly, as mentioned in the releases, the current plan with this phase one of funding mentions the UBC corridor tunnel. As for SeaBus, the logistics still need to be worked out. Don’t worry! In the coming months, we will be posting many more plans and information as they get finalized as a result of this funding agreement.
And what about HandyDart?
Why is a new WCE train being bought when surely demand for the service will decrease substantially once the Evergreen extension opens?
Excited for SkyTrain to get another 28 Bombardier Mark III cars and 22 new Canada Line cars. Will Hyundai Rotem be providing these 22 new trains for the Canada Line?
Hi Elfren! The procurement of these vehicles hasn’t been fully confirmed yet so stay tuned for that news! :)
