I’m so excited that I finally get to share this with all of you! Back in November, I was selected as one of the artists to be a part of the Capture Photography Festival that will be taking place this spring and summer around the city with a number of different works and installations. Because the festival is a photography festival, my work needed to incorporate some element of photography or photographs within it. I am no photographer, but I wanted to do something that incorporated my family and culture. Within the salmon bodies are a bunch of collaged family fishing photos. These photos incorporate my grandfather, father, aunts, uncles, cousins and myself all fishing on the Fraser River.✨ . . We are taught that salmon are sacred and are considered to be relatives who sacrifice themselves so that we may survive. They are a symbol of abundance, prosperity and wealth. They are our livelihood and fishing season in Musqueam is a family affair for many. We have fished salmon from the Fraser River since time immemorial. This knowledge continues to be passed on through families to our future generations.✨ . . This installation is located at the Richmond Brighouse Canada Line Station, directly across the street from Richmond Centre mall. It will be up all summer and taken down in early fall. I’m so excited about this and how it has all come together since the first initial planning stages. Thank you to the Richmond Art Museum and The City of Richmond for the amazing opportunity. I’m incredibly appreciative. Photographs courtesy of: Jordan Point, Kande Point-Sparkes, Coreen and Laurence Paul, Mikey Point and ‘Miss Cyndi’ ?✨ . . . . #xwməθkwəy̓əm #musqueamartist #musqueamnation #proudtobemusqueam #cityofrichmond #richmondbrighouse #capturephotographyfestival #richmondart
