We’re challenging the community to ditch their personal vehicles and take transit for the planet this Earth Day on April 22.

In our second annual Transit for the Planet, we’re encouraging customers to think sustainably by reducing your carbon footprint when you get around — whether it be the walking, cycling, bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus or the West Coast Express.

How you can be a part of Transit for the Planet

Take transit

Did you know that compared to driving you can cut your carbon footprint by at least one-halfthrough simply just taking transit? That’s right!

You’re reducing your greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by 56 per cent compared to driving a gasoline car when riding our diesel-electric buses. On our fully electric buses and SkyTrain, it’s even higher at over 99 per cent!

Pick up a wildflower seed card from us!

Our Community Outreach team is at key transit stops all weeklong challenging commuters to take Transit for the Planet and handing out seed cards for wildflowers. Planting wildflowers is a great way to kick off the arrival of spring — just cover the seed card with soil, place it in a sunny spot, and water it!

Take transit to the Surrey Vaisakhi Parade

Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade this year falls on Earth Day! Our Community Outreach team’s bringing our bus wrapped in art for Vaisakhi, while handing out those seed packets.

We encourage all attendees to take transit, so you don’t have worry about finding parking for the parade! Visit translink.ca/tripplanner to plan your trip.

To accommodate the parade, the 323 Surrey Central Station / Newton Exchange, 324 Surrey Central Station / Newton Exchange, and 329 Surrey Central Station / Scottsdale routes are re-routed. Check out translink.ca/alerts for details.

The Vaisakhi bus turns onto 49th Avenue from Main Street

How TransLink is taking climate action

As a part of our Climate Action Strategy, we’re delivering projects and initiatives so we can move to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and deliver a more climate-resilient transit system by 2050. Here’s some of the initiatives we’re undertaking to achieve this goal:

  • Introducing a total of 155 battery-electric buses by 2025 (Psst…you can already ride the first few of these buses on the 100 22nd Street Station / Marpole Loop route!)
  • Shifting our compressed natural gas (CNG) bus fleet to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2024
  • Through Transport 2050, support the region in reducing personal vehicle GHGs by 65 per cent by 2030
  • Helping business in Metro Vancouver take make commuting more sustainable with programs like Transit-Friendly Employer and the brand new Commutifi Program.
