Recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day with transit
Recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day with transit

June is National Indigenous History Month — a time to honour the stories, traditional knowledge, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada. It’s a chance to acknowledge the truths of our shared history, celebrate the vibrancy of Indigenous cultures, and commit to walking forward together in a spirit of respect and reconciliation.
Art on the move: recognizing with Rose Tashoots
This year, TransLink is pleased to collaborate once again with Indigenous artist Rose Tashoots, who has created an art wrap for one of our buses to commemorate National Indigenous Peoples Day and National Indigenous History Month.
Rose, a Tahltan and Tlingit artist from the Wolf Clan and a residential school Survivor, brings deep personal meaning to her work. Rose previously designed TransLink’s Orange Shirt Day t-shirt in her ongoing contribution to amplifying Indigenous stories through art.
The art-wrapped bus will be in service for the next eight weeks around Metro Vancouver. It will also operate as a free shuttle on June 21 to the Bill Reid Millenium Amphitheatre in Surrey. Look out for the bus on your street!
Honouring and revitalizing Indigenous languages on transit
If you take the 33 29th Avenue/UBC to get around, you’ll hear a new street name. What used to be called Trutch Street is now officially šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmasəm Street. An audio guide to the pronunciation is available here. The English translation is Musqueamview Street; this name will be on display onboard buses until our systems can display text in Indigenous languages. The new name is a welcome opportunity to recognize and honour Indigenous languages and names on transit.
Take transit to National Indigenous Peoples Day events
June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. It is also the summer solstice – the longest day of the year. For many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, this day holds deep spiritual and cultural significance. It is a time to honour Indigenous heritage, celebrate the strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, and recognize their enduring contributions to communities across Canada.
