6 transit-inspired New Year’s resolutions to ring in 2026

6 transit-inspired New Year’s resolutions to ring in 2026

List of new year's resolutions and a bus in the background

As we begin 2026, it’s common for people to treat the New Year as a fresh start. It’s a time to reflect on the past year, and think about what worked, and what didn’t.

You can create resolutions, a firm decision to do or not to do something, around many aspects of your life. It could be improving your health, achieving a career milestone or simply, remembering to refill the dish soap in time before you’re running frantically around the kitchen, up to your elbows in suds.

We’re passionate about improving transit for our customers, and while we’ve got a few resolutions of our own this year, we’d like to challenge you to take on a transit resolution for yourself.

Here’s a few suggestions to get you started with your list as you check in with yourself and make this year the best one yet!

1. Become an etiquette expert

Take a moment to review our etiquette guidelines, and you might resonate with a few of our etiquette videos on TikTok. Become someone who sets a great example for other riders and feel the exhilaration of doing the right thing.

It could be as small as:

  • I’m going to greet the bus driver every time I get on the bus.
  • I’m going to double check my bag for headphones whenever I head out on transit.
  • I’ll remember to put my umbrella on the floor, not the seat, whenever I have to use it.

2. Save money (without giving up blind boxes)

If you’re a transit pro, you might already know that paying with your Compass Card means you get a better fare than paying with cash or a contactless Interac Debit, Visa or Mastercard credit card. If you haven’t already gotten a Compass Card yet, the $6 deposit pays for itself in a few trips.

This is also a good time to consider getting a Monthly Pass, depending on how many regular trips you take. Review past bank statements and see if it would be worth it.

Finally, a nice resolution could be taking transit whenever it’s possible, rather than spending on pricey ride hailing and gas. There might be an easy route to your destination you don’t know about. Visit our Trip Planner to plug in trips and find convenient transit options.

3. Get healthier (without actually hiking every weekend)

Walking to and from bus stops or SkyTrain stations can really add up to a workout in itself. It’s common these days for our phones to count our steps. The next time you have walking in your commute, see how many steps it took, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Have a gym nearby? Level up and consider walking or taking the bus when you’ve got the time.

Alternatively, if you’ve got a bike, you can use it alongside transit to go further, faster. Check out our video on using the bike rack on buses and maybe resolve to trying a few trips this way.

4. Broaden your perspective

Transit is downtime disguised as travel, perhaps you could set a goal to finish a number of books or start listening to a podcast you’ve been meaning to.

What’s cool about this one, is you could designate certain books, podcasts or even television shows for transit only. It gives you something to look forward to during your commute, and we can bet you’ll finish books and podcasts faster without the distractions of home.

5. Be a local explorer

Commit to taking a day to explore your world on transit only. Grab a DayPass and a friend or have a solo adventure.

The satisfaction of independence is one of the best parts about transit, you could go anywhere! You could stop by that cafe you’ve been meaning to try but never get to during your commute. You could simply decide your day on the go, with so many transit options available to you.

You could also resolve to take a form of transit you’ve never tried before. The West Coast Express is a commuter train, that only runs during certain hours and weekdays. It’s a great, easy ride downtown if you start your day early, and can take you to SkyTrain stations home from Waterfront.

6. Level up your career (without changing your whole life)

Transit doesn’t just get you to work, it could be your next workplace! From operators and technicians to planners, communicators, and tech roles, TransLink is hiring across the region. If your New Year’s resolution includes growth, stability, and career goals, this might be your sign.
