Our colleagues over at the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service sent along a note about two of their officers, who had their heads shaved for charity this weekend.

Cst. Keith Grace and Bernard Florido went down to an event called the Baldy Bash in Las Vegas, participating to raise money for PEP, an organization of professionals helping parents and families of very sick children.

The call to help out the PEP effort came from Blue Dreams, a national group of emergency service personnel who draw on police officers, firemen, correction officers and paramedics to assist in raising money for families of children who are facing life threatening illnesses.

The event happened to fall on part of our officers’ four days off so they quickly organized air and accommodation for the three day head shaving event. Both had their thick heads of hair shaved and assisted in raising $31,500 dollars for the group.

It’s very common for law enforcement officers and firemen in Canada and the U.S. to cross the border to honor a fallen comrade–and that shared sense of duty and commitment to community also extends to raising money for charities.

Both officers are relatively new to policing and have been amazed at the bond between those men and women in emergency services, no matter what side of the border they come from!
