Good news: we’re going to install a second elevator at Scott Road Station!

This finally addresses a longstanding issue with the Scott Road elevator situation. The current elevator connects the SkyTrain to the park and ride, but not the bus loop. So if a person with mobility concerns arrived at the bus loop and wanted to transfer to SkyTrain, they needed a taxi to get to the elevator in the Park & Ride lot across the street. And vice versa if they wanted to get over to the bus loop from SkyTrain. Yikes!

So, following the recommendation of the Access Transit Users’ Advisory Committee, we have now approved the necessary capital funds to build a new elevator going from SkyTrain to the bus loop, and we’ll make sure the elevator construction will take precedence over other renovations at Scott Road.

This whole project is part of TransLink’s commitment to make transit accessible for as many people as possible. You can find out more about this at our Access Transit page.

Plus, more station upgrades are also being completed to increase accessibility. So far, four major stations have been identified for improvements. In 2006, an elevator was installed at Granville Station making the downtown core accessible. Broadway Station is currently being upgraded. And future improvements are anticipated for Metrotown and Main Street Stations.

Jim: Here’s the response from the team managing the Scott Road project.

    1. The Request for Proposal (RFP) process for the Scott Road Elevator project was successful. We received five proposals in response to the issuance of the RFP for Contract 0901-04, Scott Road Elevator Design and Consultant Services. This Contract was awarded to the Colborne Architectural Group Pacific Inc. Colborne has completed the design of structures required to integrate the new elevator into Scott Road SkyTrain Station.

    2. We are currently coordinating with the Fare Gate project on items relating to the new facilities for the fare gates at Scott Road, and how these facilities will integrate with the elevator facilities. This will delay the issuance of tenders for the Scott Road elevator until late 2010 or early 2011. This delay is necessary to allow design teams to ensure that both the elevator project and the fare gate project designs are managed in a properly coordinated way, and to ensure the integrity of the final product.

The disappointment is that the installation of the elevator at the SR west entrance will be delayed until late 2011, while we coordinate the work of our project with that of the fare gate project. The good news is that this project is proceeding as expeditiously as possible.

Don’t forget to make nice elevator design there and do not save on safety.
