Photos from the Vancouver City Centre open house

Maybe it was the hot weather, maybe it was all the free samples of Jugo Juice, but there were thousands of people at the Vancouver City Centre open house (and Granville Showcase) on Saturday!
Check out some great photos of the station and trains below:
- Dan Udey’s Flickr set
- Josh Novosad’s gallery
- Adam’s gallery
- Ivan Chan has sent in 360-degree panoramics of the ticket concourse level and the platform level, plus a short HD video clip.
- Allen’s Flickr set of Canada Line photos — the Vancouver City Centre ones start about halfway through.
- Ron has also sent along his photos, which you can find in his Flickr stream.
- Hey, here’s a walking tour video of VCC station, from vancouverite1989 on YouTube!
If you have any more photos to share, please send me a link and I’ll add it here!
Great pictures! Just a bit curious… I thought they were going to install turnstiles at the stations and implement a smartcard type system before the olympics?
As far as I know, turnstiles & smartcards won’t be in place before the Olympics. I’m not exactly certain why that timeline was given when the faregates/smartcards announcement was made, but as of now, we haven’t even issued a request for proposals for a smartcard provider yet.
Great to finally see some progress! One quick question: why not install station entrances directly on sidewalks instead of taking up extra space? Wouldn’t that be more practical? I mean, a simple stairway and up escalator won’t take up that much space, would it? Or forgo the escalator and install an elevator directly to the sidewalk?
HEy Jhenifer any news on Middle cars for the Canadaline? are they going to be tiny little 10 meter long cars? or are they going to have to add extension to the platfroms with 20 meters in length?
also I hear that skytrain plans on lengthening the skytrain platforms. How will they achieve that especially in the tunnels? will the skytrains be out of service for a couple of months?
I have one final question are they ever going to upgrade Columbia station and giving it a major over haul?
It’s not going to be easy, but I wouldn’t call it impossible. Just really expensive, and maybe not worth it ATM. But it would be REALLY nice to have 6- and 8-car and maybe even 10-car trains.
If the middle section goes in, part of the front and back ends can hang off the platform or be hidden in the tunnel.
Because we can walk between the cars, all they need to do is ensure some of the doors are accessible on the platform.
I strongly support whatever measures are available to keep the costs down and capacity high. Perhaps the middle cars could have bench seats to maximize capacity even more space for luggage and wheelchairs.
Kerplunk: As far as I know the middle cars are definitely possible on the Canada Line. However, there aren’t any current plans to add the middle cars right now. Also, yes, to use them would require platform extension or perhaps the method suggested by ;-).
Kerplunk: I’ve asked SkyTrain about your next two questions too, and
as far as they know, there aren’t any plans to extend the platforms right now. As for Columbia, SkyTrain has done some lighting upgrades but no other plans are currently in the works for that station.
I think bench seats definitely should’ve been in all the cars. Sure, it might reduce seating capacity by a couple of seats, but it’ll be easier getting on and off. Plus there’ll be some more standing room too.
What was the original rationale behind the Skytrain being run in four-car configurations?
