Links and tidbits for Thursday, April 29
April 29, 2010
Another week, another tidbits and links list! If you have links & tidbits to suggest, or a photo to showcase on these posts, e-mail me at thebuzzer@translink.ca.
- Zach Shaner has a great post comparing Vancouver transit against Seattle transit. His article spawned a number of discussions elsewhere: Paul Hillsdon examined Metro Vancouver’s bus frequencies after Zach’s charts, and then Seattle Transit Blog put Zach’s post up for discussion. Much to digest!
- The National Post launched a poster campaign for Toronto subway etiquette which has been making the rounds online (the nail clipper one = yes). Folks in the Vancouver Livejournal community weighed in from our side.
- Japadog will open in front of Waterfront Station at the end of April!
- The Tyee looks at the rise of bike and car sharing. Sort of related: Denver launched its bike sharing system last week.
- Edmonton launched the latest extension of its LRT system on Monday: here’s the Edmonton Journal’s coverage.
- Regarding Place has a great article from the end of March about how Vancouver became a transit city for 17 days.
- There’ll soon be one less TransLink on the west coast: if you hadn’t heard already, the TransLink card from San Francisco is changing its name to Clipper on June 16.
- Jarrett Walker from Human Transit showcases some rather beautiful real-time system maps from San Francisco.
- New York City Transit releases its annual station-by-station breakdown of subway ridership. The New York Times had a go at interpreting the results (includes a nice graph).
- From 2008: Serious Eats asked is it rude to eat on mass public transit? (The answer seems to be “Yes”.)
- The City of Vancouver’s bike department is currently asking people about which bike routes are “rough rides” — a.k.a. which ones have deteriorating pavement quality. See their Facebook page for more.
- L.A. Metro’s amazing historical library now has its own blog!
- This cyclist literally goes insane to win ultracycling races. (via Kottke.org)
- Finally, here’s a lovely shot of our SkyTrain.
I asked a question in series 1 and series 6 of fleet overhaul. Did you get them?

Yes Ric, they have been passed along for answers. As mentioned before, it would be very much appreciated if you don’t ask repeatedly whether I have seen the questions!
I read on Steve Munro’s blog, http://stevemunro.ca/ that Toronto is considering buying MK1 SkyTrain cars from us to run on the Scarborough RT to get them through until that line can be rebuilt for LRT. Can you shed any light on this. Do we really have that many extra SkyTrain cars?
I’ll send your note along to SkyTrain — I hadn’t heard anything about that!
Ugh… that doesn’t make sense… It’s not like we have any to spare cause SkyTrain is always packed + I like Mark 1 trains =D If we ever do happen to sell some to the LRT in Toronto, it’d be funny if they don’t repaint them… Vancouver trains running in Toronto hehehe
