Tidbits and links! If you have any to suggest, or a photo to showcase on these posts, e-mail me at thebuzzer@translink.ca! I’m especially in need of good photos to showcase.
- We’ve released our data about traffic volumes on the Golden Ears Bridge during the first half of 2010. Looks like a teeny bit more people are crossing than we expected—$80,000 more came in than predicted.
- In Seattle, the King Street Station is restoring its historic ceiling! I can’t believe it got covered up in the 1960s.
- Vancouver apparently has the cheapest parking among the five big Canadian cities.
- I’m a bit late to this one, but here’s another post from Owen about a SkyTrain station that never was: Grandview Station.
- Many neat bus stop links emerged from the bus stop post two weeks ago: here’s a Flickr group of bus stops photos worldwide, a Gordon Price post about cool bus stops, and the details of Celine Rich’s 1996 Vancouver bus stop art project.
- The EnoTrans newsletter writes about the Canada Line.
- Jean Chong writes about cycling in Europe vs Vancouver, and especially about bikes on trains.
- David Byrne, musician and cyclist, describes his perfect city.
- Zow: B.C. gasoline consumption is up 10 per cent?
- The B.C. Electric Railway Transit board game! Thanks Jason Vanderhill!
- The New Westminster Public Library has a display about transportation history.
- Improv Everywhere continues its public transit performances: here’s Star Wars performed on the subway.
- This came up during the Vancouver Is Awesome transit giveaway: a story about a man with a bird on a bus.
- Last week was the 20th anniversary of the Blue Line in Los Angeles! Here’s a series of videos showing the Ninja Turtles on the Blue Line in the 1990s.
- Fixing the Red Line in Washington D.C.
- A fantastic New York Magazine article on the future of transit, focusing on bus rapid transit and bus-only lanes. (Here’s a followup from Good Magazine.)
- Toronto introduces Next Bus text message schedule updates for its streetcar service.
- And last but not least: Velibataire, hooking up single users of Paris’ bike sharing system :)

I love these links and tidbit posts. Great work.
Speaking of covering up the old to make them better? A few years ago I walked into the new Sally Ann Store in New Westminster and was amazed to find that the build was a resorted streetcar depot. I mean I walked past what I thought was an old ugly non-interesting 1970s building many times without a second look, but after the resort found great building of history. They did have pictures showing the resort and if you walked inside you can see where the building is specifically designed to support streetcars (with an angled entrance to the street) and a lounge.
That picture really looks cool. I mean wow a train set that looks like the Canada Line now, wow. ^_^
There’s an error on the link about Toronto’s next streetcar text message system.
zack: Good catch. Fixed now!
Frank: indeed, the Salvation Army was the old streetcar depot :) You might be interested in this past post, which talks about the interurbans running out to New Westminster — it doesn’t touch on the depot specifically but does provide info about the whole system and how it connected greater Vancouver together.
Funny how that blog posted the picture of a bus on a route which no longer exists! For those who are familiar the 194 Zoo Rocket route was an express route between the Scarborough Town Centre RT and the Toronto Zoo. But it was later axed due to low ridership.
I think you mean 80,000 instead of 8,000 more for the Golden Ear Bridge revenue.
Oh, whoops!
