I Love Transit 2012: tell us why you love transit (and win a limited edition t-shirt!)
July 16, 2012
Update: Richard W is the randomly chosen winner of the t-shirt! Congrats Richard!
For I Love Transit Week 2012, let’s kick it off with an open thread!
Share why you love transit in the comments below! And for your trouble, we’ll do a random draw on Friday, July 20, 2012 at noon, giving one of our limited-edition I Love Transit shirts to a lucky commenter!
Yes, we have new t-shirts for this year, designed by Buzzer pal Andy Dixon! (You may recall he illustrated the March 2012 Buzzer!)
We’ll also be giving away the shirts on I Love Transit Night on Wednesday —- so that’s another reason to come out and join us!
And if you’re looking for some inspiration, here’s a great I Love Transit post over at Car Free Vancouver. Yay!
I love transit because I can go to where I want to go without having to walk. For example, once I biked for an hour along the Central Valley Greenway, I got tired at Sperling so I decided to bus the rest of the way
Our transit system is a fascinating, unpredictable organism. It often forces you outside of your comfort zone, but it’s shared experiences that bind a city together. That nod understanding in a crowded train, or act of kindness on a rainy evening.
You can’t feel the soul of a city through the windows of your speeding car.
Earlier this year, I had to take my dog for an operation at the BCSPCA hospital, so I took the 340 to 22nd st, then Skytrain to Broadway, changing to VCC Clark, then I came back to over to Surrey, up to Scott rd Station, by bus over to Surrey central by train and then bus to Guildford to see a man who was going to move a piano for me. From Guildford, I went back to Scott Rd, then Skytrained to Lougheed to get some pet fish supplies, and then back to VCC to pick up my dog. After that I came back home with him to make dinner for the kids. Then I had to go back to Nanaimo station to drop off a fish for someone, the back downtown to pick up my wife so we could ride back home to Surrey together from her work.
All that travelling for a $9 day pass, is why I love Transit, and all the while, I was able to read my book.
I love transit because it’s a low-cost, easy way to get around the Lower Mainland, with routes going everywhere. Also great for taking adventures to new places!
I <3 transit because it saves having to deal with Vancouver motorists, and finding and paying for parking downtown.
I love transit because it helped me get into shape and live a healthier life. I used to start jogging from Metrotown station, and follow the tracks either to the west or the east. When I was too tired I would stop and just hitch the skytrain back. Transit helped change my life!
I love transit because it is clean, safe, easy to use and the employees (bus drivers) are very nice. It goes everywhere and really is a great value.
Love the look of Robert’s shirt! :)
I love transit because of how unique out system is. I also love the automated trains, the seabus, and how large the system is. As the system grows, I hope it will expand to the border.
I like travelling to the downtown area, and to Children’s Hospital, on one ticket. When we have time, we like to go on adventures, visiting various parts of our community. The best way to learn about where you live, is to go on adventures.
I don’t drive and so transit I have found over the decades is an affordable way to travel throughout the Greater Vancouver. Have over the years read at least a hundred books during commute time and occasionally even fallen asleep on the bus, but still 99% of the time arrived at my destination on time! Some interesting and homourous events have been witnessed that make fun stories to share.
Transit has been awesome for years. It’s cheap and fast and it serves up an intimate Vancouver experience every time. It keeps the air clean too.
I love transit because I feel like I’m helping the environment. Every time I see a packed bus I think, “Imagine how many cars we are saving from being on the road..”. Everybody should take transit.
So many things to love about transit: Seabus crossings at sunset; 50 Granville Island bus; Skytrain’s Expo line; C21 Beach mini-buses tuned into classical music stations; three minute commutes by the 26 Joyce Station bus going to Killarney Community Centre; cherry blossom trees in flower at Burrard Station in spring; not worrying about parking fees, traffic, and parking as a personal result of taking a bus or Skytrain to downtown Vancouver!
I love transit because it reduces the amount of pollution that I produce and makes my commute less stressful.
I love transit because I can get some extra sleep in all the way to work!
I love transit so many reasons but mostly for its efficiency. I can predictably be downtown within 20 minutes from Metrotown – if I’m late it was cause I spent too long deciding what shoes to wear not cause of traffic. Having lived in Greater Vancouver all my life, I’ve never felt the need for owning a car because transit just made sense. I feel connected to the people in the city as I commute with them; I’d feel like in a bubble otherwise seeing the same co-workers and friends, getting in my car home, work, repeat.
It gets me where I need to go when it’s too far to walk. And my daughter loves transit because we don’t do it very often so it’s an ‘adventure’.
I love transit because it saves me thousands of dollars over owning a car.
I love transit because it saves me from high parking fees and gives me the opportunity to sleep in the morning when heading to school.
I love transit! The sights and sounds make the rhythm of the street. The voices and the faces make the community. You know you’ll get to your destination but the journey is all the fun!
I appreciate the system is there to get people moving but sometimes it’s the ability to see and learn something new that make you want to ride that one extra stop.
I complain a lot about transit, but I love it, because mobility is a form of liberty that we need to cherish.
I remember when I *really* started using transit in 1995. It was after my grad year at Bible college. In my grad year, some of us had studied Urban Ministries. A part of it was about how city planning and transit affected church ministries. The topic truly fascinated me. For a project, we had to ride a bus in Calgary, and count people getting on and off.
When I came home, a lot of the mindset was still in me, and it still is. During my first summer, after grad, I tried transit with this new perspective, and everything seemed so magical. A bus pulls up and we can be in a new place in a matter of minutes?? Wow… [actually most trips seem to take forever, but at least we can still count the time in minutes ;^P]
By the way, don’t get me wrong. I have been riding transit since before I was 5. It just felt new and exciting to me after college.
The reason why i love transit most of all is because i have taken the bus for over 4 years and i have never had a bad driver. they are always nice and if you are lost or dont know how to get somewhere they will help you without being mean about it. I think the transit bus operators are awsome
I love transit because it brings me to where I want to go. The buses always arrive on time and they’re always clean. It’s nice to know that I’m saving on money and still be able to help the environment. =)
I love transit because it is one of my favourite methods of travelling from place to place. Not only do you get to hold conversations on the bus, but also when you’re feeling for some alone time you can simply look out the window and enjoy the scenery. This is especially true what I’m on the transit for longer commute rides, such as commuting to and fro to school!
I love transit because I can just relax and not worry about having to find parking, especially when I go downtown. I can also read or catch up on some sleep while on transit. Good luck doing either of those while driving!
I love transit because you meet interesting people, have time to relax and see sights, and occassionally take a nap during your travels.
I love transit because it is also our family bonding time while going to our place of interest. My family loves to travel locally so we took advantage of our road trip via public transit as our venue for learning by looking outside our window and discover things around us. The fact that it is stroller friendly, we were able to get around very easily. Ops, don’t forget the kindness of the drivers… especially Kam (Bus #16, Route #16:Arbutus/29th Avenue Station)!
Man, these are phenomenal! Thanks to everyone who entered. Rob did the draw last week and Richard W was our grand prize t-shirt winner. But truly, you are all winners of I Love Transit Week :)
