Temporary closure of the east side of Main Street-Science World Station
February 26, 2013
This is a quick update of the Phase 1 of the Main Street-Science World Station upgrades. The east side of station (park side) will be temporarily closed. Passengers are being re-directed to the west side of the station (Science World side) via a covered walkway and temporary fencing.
A permanent extension to the east side platform and new east side station house featuring a new elevator, escalators and bike storage will be built. Of note, some of the work will be done at night due to safety concerns and traffic regulations.
SkyTrain service will remain normal during this time. For more info on the upgrades, please check the Main Street-Science World Station upgrades page on the TransLink website.
When will we to hear any news about Metrotown Station upgrades?

Hi Sheba: We’ll report on Metrotown as soon as we have specific datest. Hopefully in a few months time.
While “east” may avoid the confusion, I think it would be a lot better to be announcing this as an “east END” closure of the station rather than the “east SIDE” of it. When I hear “side” the first thing I think is that one of the platforms (either inbound or outbound) has been closed. The picture you’ve included in the blog post makes things very clear, but I’m sure a lot of media in which this is announced won’t carry the photo.
@Sheba
I wonder if the Station Square redevelopment be taken into consideration for the rebuild at Metrotown.
Both of those things have been in the planning for awhile Cliff. I have a pdf dated 2007 that talks about Metrotown Station upgrades and already shows (in a different color to show they weren’t currently there) a lot of the construction that’s happening now.
Admittedly the Station Square section isn’t drawn in like the renders show now, but I think that hadn’t been decided on yet. Still it was a given that it would be redeveloped.
Sure moving the bus loop to Beresford will be handy for all the people who will move into the Station Square towers. It also makes sense if you want to divide up all the people transferring to a bus vs the people heading into the mall. The way it is now is a headache.
On a side note, I wouldn’t be too crabby if Metrotown Station was closed during part of it’s upgrades as Patterson Station is so close.
