Um, and what is the 19 going to do?
Hey Brooke, I just added info for the #19 reroute. Thanks!
19 Stanley Park – Regular route to Main and Pender then Main, Hastings, Richards, Pender and continue regular route
19 Metrotown – Regular route to Pender and Homer then Homer, Hastings, Main and continue regular route
The detour of the 22 adds two unnecessary turning movements in each direction. The extra turns at Howe/Hornby and Hastings/Pender will confuse riders and slow the bus down. Why not turn at Burrard and Hastings in both directions instead of making three turns? There is an advanced left-turn signal at this intersection. There is no advanced left-turn signal at Pender and Hornby.
There are some advantages to putting all bus routes (at least westbound) on Hastings Street. Customers will experience more frequent service at each stop with service on one street instead of two parallel streets. However, a collision or daily traffic congestion can disrupt an enormous number of transit trips. Without some additional prioritization, especially an exclusive transit lane, there is a risk that transit will become unreliable for a very large number of people.
Delays and reliability problems on this stretch of Hastings will propagate widely through the bus network. Routes that run on the affected part of Hastings include the list of routes below which shows the average weekday boardings for each from the 2014 Bus Service Performance Review.
3 – 17300
4 – 7750
7 – 12950
8 – 16250
14 – 15700
16 – 21250
19 – 15100
20 – 25800
22 – 20300
135 – 19600
160 – 4150
210 – 3750
211 – 2400
More than 180000 people will potentially experience delays and unreliable transit service throughout this reroute. Has TransLink asked the City of Vancouver to put a dedicated transit lane on Hastings for the length of this work?
Hi Mike0123, #22 reroute details have been updated, please see above for the revised route. As to the bus lane question, as far as I know there will be no dedicated bus lanes on Hastings.
What about the night buses that do run on pender street eg. N19, N22, N24?
Hi Kelly, good eye! The missing info has now been added. Thanks!
Why can’t this be permanent? By congregating all buses on hastings, like on granvile, the bus network is less complicated, and people wishing to travel east from downtown can simply wait on hastings street, because there are more buses. In fact, with the 3,4,7,8,19,20,22, and 135 all travelling on hastings, you can be guaranteed to get a bus in no time. Personally, I always have to make this short trip from SFU downtown to chinatown, so it will definitely benefit me. And while you’re at it, you can cut both the 8 and the 20 at Main and hastings, interlining them into one route. Their schedules are very similar, most people use the 8 & 20 in the downtown section, and people wanting to travel downtown simply need to transfer to one of the many buses at main and hastings or transfer at main street skytrain station.
Will there be new bus stops along Hastings street to accomodate the missed stops on Pender? Will they be numbered stops. That would really help especially in the first few weeks. Thanks!
Can we get a map?
Hi Joe, unfortunately there are no maps available at this time.
Ten MONTHS!? Buying a car.
Laura,
Has a dedicated bus lane been discussed with the City?
The #22 reroute details are still wrong. I fixed them for you:
#22:
Westbound – Regular route to Gore and Pender then continues along Gore, left on Hastings, left on Burrard, and then continues on regular route.
Eastbound – Regular route to Burrard and Pender then continues along Burrard, right on Hastings, right on Gore and then continues on regular route. Note: the #22 Eastbound will no longer be able to use stop #50076 and the signage will be changed accordingly.
I remember there was talk of cutting the #20 at Main and Hastings at the last Vancouver Transit area plan a decade or so ago. This would great improve reliability on the Victoria segment and eliminate the Hastings redundancy.
Honestly, the 8/3 should be truncated at Main/Alexander with a layover area on Gore (this would GREATLY improve reliability!!!) before returning on Main St via Powell. This doesn’t even require much new trolley overhead investment.
The 5/6 should then be extended to Hastings/Gore/Pender to provide better downtown connections, and would better match capacity lost by the 3/8 (and 20 if we truncate that as well).
This blog provide a cool concept of redesigning downtown busses. (Although, I’d rather keep the 5/6 as a loop and not end at Denman north of Georgia) https://voony.wordpress.com/2014/03/31/vancouver-downtown-transit-network-the-local-view/
When will the north shore busses be re routed back to pender. The water street route is longer slower and inconvenient. The pender work was completed in December however you have not routed the buses back.
Hi, can you advise when is bus 19 going to be running regular route again? Is the Pender Rd construction all competed?
Thanks,
-Zeke
