New tunnel technology will transform your SkyTrain trip
TransLink is transforming your SkyTrain experience, bringing new meaning to the term tunnel vision.
Thanks to an innovative partnership with Vancouver-based adtrackmedia, we’re the first in North America to launch new technology that will play full-motion videos to SkyTrain cars travelling through the Dunsmuir tunnel.
The silent videos last 10-seconds each and are projected onto SkyTrain windows as customers pass through the Dunsmuir tunnel.
Each tunnel advertisement uses 360 specialized LED lights which create smooth, dynamic videos.
The lights are mounted to parallel tracks on one side of the tunnel wall. Sensors detect incoming trains and automatically display videos as the trains enter the Dunsmuir tunnel.
TransLink is the first in North America to use video projection on moving SkyTrain windows. This type of digital advertising has seen past success in Asia, South America, and Europe.
Customers can expect to see informational videos from TransLink as well as advertising media from third-parties which will generate advertising revenue and help fund public transit in Metro Vancouver.
TELUS is adtrackmedia’s first advertising partner, so customers can expect to see a year of cute critters gracing the ad space of this new system.
Currently, videos are playing for customers travelling eastbound from Waterfront to Burrard Station. Video displays for westbound riders from Stadium–Chinatown to Granville Station will launch in the coming months.
Very cool. Will have to check it out.
Can you do the same thing for the Canada Line and the Evergreen Extension Tunnel and the Broadway-UBC Tunnel Line as well please? Thank You! :)
How about, before advertising, dealing with the weak signals in the skytrain first? I can’t even continue calls when I am near Edmonds station or Columbia Station.
This is not new, NY subway system was using these video LED advertisements in 2009 when the Canadian company SideTrack Technologies and Sub-Media were pitching the ideas to transit operations around North America.

I mentioned this article to previous Buzzer Blog editor Jhenifer Pabillano back in the day as a potential to use in Canada/Expo tunnels to generate ad revenue just in time for the 2010 Games. Her reply to me was, she’ll send it to Translink’s marketing team.
The original article from the NY Times is here (but behind a paywall now):

And it didn’t happen before in 2010 but hopefully will, it is still new for SkyTrain yesterday and I’m sure they’ll do it as part for the 2030 Winter Games once the IOC has chosen us as a host city. :) They did not install LED Advertisements in time for the 2010 Winter Games but until now.
Disgusting. We get bombarded with enough advertising as is. I wish you wouldn’t sell out and contribute to furthering the pollution of people’s visual landscape.
Get this s*** out of my eyesight. I don’t care about your ads.
