Flamenco trio to put on a mesmerizing show on transit
This October, Art Moves — TransLink’s music and performance residency series — brings a mesmerizing show on transit that might be hard to keep your eyes and ears off of. We’re joined by Calle Verde, a dance and music trio performing Flamenco, which is a traditional Spanish dance known for its intensity.
Professional Flamenco dancers serve up impressive tap dancing, captivating facial expressions, and fast and snappy body coordination.
Maria Avila, a Calle Verde performer, describes Flamenco as an outlet for showing strength. It’s normally performed by a soloist accompanied by a cuadro, a group of musicians which may consist of a classical guitar player, singer, palmero (handclapper), and percussionist. Often, you’ll also see dancers making percussive sounds while dancing, whether it be through tap dancing, playing with castanets, or clapping to the beat.
Calle Verde is a group with multi-talented performers. During their performance, you might see Maria switching from dancing to singing, and Michelle Harding switching from dancing to playing the cajon. Peter Mole completes the package with his flawless classical guitar playing, serving as the music bed and heartbeat of Calle Verde’s performances.
