Construction of the Broadway Subway project, an extension of the SkyTrain’s Millennium Line, is well underway!

The tunnel boring machine Phyllis broke through at the future South Granville Station in December and is readying to embark on its last leg towards the future Arbutus Station. Close behind is Elsie, the second boring machine, on its way to South Granville.

Elsewhere, construction is beginning on dual tunnels that will directly connect the Millennium Line platforms to the Canada Line platforms at Broadway–City Hall Station!

The tunnels, which are located behind the faregates, will allow customers to seamlessly transfer in less than three minutes between the Millennium and Canada Lines — just like between the Expo and Millennium Line platforms at Commercial–Broadway Station.

The tunnel to the southbound Canada Line platform for trains to Richmond–Brighouse and YVR–Airport stations is about 24 metres long. It passes underneath the Canada Line tracks, connecting to the existing excavation on Cambie Street, where escalators, stairs and an elevator will take passengers up to the Canada Line platform.

The other tunnel, which will take customers to the northbound Canada Line platform for trains to Waterfront Station, is about 13.5 metres long and passes directly underneath the station entrance and the Cambie Street sidewalk.

This is where escalators, stairs and an elevator will carry passengers between the future Millennium Line platform and the existing Canada Line southbound platform.

Construction impacts for pedestrians and bus customers

To build the connection to the northbound Canada Line platform, Broadway Subway Project crews are currently working on the Cambie Street east sidewalk adjacent to the Canada Line entrance.

The Bay 2 bus stop at Broadway–City Hall Station (#61027), servicing the 15 Cambie/Olympic Village Station and 17 Downtown/Oak, is temporarily moved one block south to just south of W. 10th Avenue.

Pedestrian detours along the east sidewalk on Cambie Street will also be intermittently in place between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. to accommodate that work. Pedestrian access on the east sidewalk will be maintained during the day.

This work is expected to be completed this spring.
