Here’s how you can get a free dance class on transit

Art Moves performer Isaac Gasangwa or Izo

You can get a free African dance class at Waterfront Station on Friday, Oct. 18! The Vancouver-renowned Isaac Gasangwa — or Izo — along with a troupe of six dancers are leading interactive workshops in the station, outside of the faregates in the station lobby. There will be four 20-minute sessions between 4 and 6 p.m..

This pop-up event is part of Art Moves, TransLink’s music and performance series. With this program, we hope to bring vibrance to transit riders’ commutes, making transit more than a place to get around, but also a place to engage with art and the community.

So come, get a quick dance class this Friday and let’s put you in high spirits for the weekend!

About Izo

Isaac Gasangwa, also known as Izo Dreamchaser, is a prominent figure in Vancouver’s dance community. He is the founder and artistic director at Afrobeats Van, which hosts African dance classes and workshops.

Dance was ingrained in Izo’s life growing up. It wasn’t something he had formal training on but is rather a part of his everyday life. His passion for the art led him to form a successful dance group in Rwanda, winning many national accolades. He also started a dance program for underprivileged children which continues to thrive today.

When Izo relocated in Vancouver in 2014, he was exposed to a diverse dance landscape. Despite the variety, Izo recognized a void in the representation of Afrobeats dance. So, he founded Afrobeats Van where individuals with African descent can connect with their cultural roots through dance, and anyone who loves to dance can get lost in the groove of this art.
