Through our Local Government Funding Programs, we’ve been working with local governments to improve accessibility, comfort, and safety for active travel. Cycling can be one of the fastest ways to travel around the city, especially in more urban areas.

Tips

Plan your route with these tools

The Metro Vancouver Cycling Maps include key connections to transit hubs, locations of bike lockers and parkades, and indicate areas with steeper hills. They also show the comfort levels of each route based on how separated it is from traffic.

There’s also the Vancouver Bike Route Planner. It’s a dedicated trip planner for cycling in Metro Vancouver with the ability find routes that are “safer,” have the least hills, and more.

Register your bike with 529 Garage

529 Garage allows you to register your bike easily and securely in just minutes. Include images and all the necessary details law enforcement requires to expedite the recovery process in the event your bike is stolen.

Bike to transit to travel further

Bike to a station, lock it up at a bike parkade, locker or rack, and hop on transit.

Bike Parkades allow you to “bike and ride” for only $1/day up to $8/month to park your bike. Register your Compass Card for access to the Bike Parkades. You can also rent a Bike Locker monthly for only $10 a month.

Bring your bike on transit

You can take your bike on bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express, with some restrictions. Visit translink.ca/biketotransit for details and restrictions.

Of note, scooters that do not fold are not allowed on board and if the transit vehicle is busy, you may not be able to bring your bike or scooter on board. Bikes and scooters are not allowed on escalators at stations, please use the elevators.

Never put your bike on a bus before, or feel like you need a refresher? Check out this step-by-step tutorial to have you feeling confident in no time. Need a more hands-on experience? Try out your new skills at a practice bus bike location near you.

Use a bike or scooter share

You don’t need your own bike or scooter to bike, walk, ride and roll! There are bike and scooter shares operating in cities across Metro Vancouver. Here’s a list:
