New washroom now open at Metrotown Station
New washroom now open at Metrotown Station
A brand-new washroom is now open at Metrotown Station, one of the busiest points on the transit network, to improve the customer experience for riders.
About the new washroom:
- Open 7 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday
- Open 8 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. on Sundays
- Four individual stalls, including an accessible stall
- Located between Metrotown Station’s western entrance and its central entrance
- Staffed by an attendant during operating hours
- Transit Security will be nearby, in addition to the washroom attendant
Adding more washrooms has been a top request from customers, and we saw this through the 2022 Customer Experience Action Plan engagement. TransLink is delivering on that feedback by expanding the number of washrooms on our system.
Metrotown Station is a convenient location for a new facility because it is centrally located, it serves as a major transfer point between SkyTrain and buses, and it sees more than 25,000 boardings on a typical weekday. It is also the second busiest SkyTrain station in the region – second to only Waterfront Station which already has a washroom in the SeaBus terminal.
Future locations
Funding through the 2022 Investment Plan supports increasing the number of washrooms across our system. Washrooms are already available at:
- Waterfront Station’s SeaBus Terminal
- The Lonsdale Exchange SeaBus Terminal
- Onboard each West Coast Express train
- At Metrotown Station [New: September 2025]
TransLink is seeking additional funding through future Investment Plans to continue expanding washrooms to more locations on the system for customers.
TransLink is planning for future washrooms to be opened in phases, starting with Phibbs Exchange, where plumbing was included during recent upgrades. Phibbs Exchange is a busy transfer point for North Shore commuters and Capilano University students, it is also the terminus of the R2 RapidBus, and it is a future transfer point for the Metrotown-North Shore Bus Rapid Transit route.
Following Phibbs Exchange, we’re doing early planning work to potentially add washrooms at Commercial–Broadway and Scott Road stations.
Commercial–Broadway Station is the next busiest station on the system after Metrotown and a washroom at this location would serve customers on both the Expo Line and Millennium Line. With two SkyTrain lines and the busiest bus in Metro Vancouver (the 99 B-Line) it is a major transfer point for customers.
Scott Road Station is also an ideal location for Surrey riders due to the connected bus loop featuring the R6 Scott Road RapidBus, and the Park and Ride. It is a common transfer point for our rapidly growing customer base in Surrey.
Local artwork
The Metrotown washroom features bright and colourful artwork designed by Vancouver artist Sandeep Johal. The design makes the space warm, welcoming, and uniquely local. Art throughout the facility also helps to deter vandalism and graffiti, lowering annual maintenance costs.

I'm just a guy who hates bios, but likes trains... and buses... and SeaBuses.

This is fantastic! The region needs many more public washrooms. Happy to see Translink leading the way.
Ok
Full heatedly agree!
I’m thrilled to see the Metrotown washrooms open and hear more are in the works! Do any other locations besides the Phibbs Exchange have existing plumbing to
build on?
Need washrooms on the fvx route 66 chilliwack to lougheed stn
I believe there will be junkies flooding it immediately!
There will be an attendant and security close by!
I would love to see public washroom at Lougheed Sky Train Station
ME TOO!
i give it less than 1 month for them to be trashed.
Seeing as it will have a full time attendant, I sincerely hope not.
About time they did this they should open washrooms in all of the sky train stations cuz people need to use the bathroom and it might be an emergency.
Now if they can put one maybe at waterfront station and either Braid or Coquitlam station. Oh and maybe at Brentwood. That way there are washrooms at each end of the lines and one in the middle. And we can’t forget King George station either. That covers my comment.
Way to go Translink/Coast Mountain!!!
We should have washrooms
(TOILETS) at every station, lake many cities in Europe and England .
How backward can we be?
Very few toilets on streets. What the hell are we scared of?
Same go for the picnic tables and chairs just outside the station which last less than a year. All gone now.
😂
The openness (glass) and idea of an attendant seems to be the best hope for this space to succeed. It’s unclear how “nearby” security would be, though, and the idea of having it open after dark seems risky. I also see baseboard heaters, which means it could become a shelter of sorts in Winter unless the attendant keeps people moving in/out.
Still, this is a positive step and I applaud Translink for trying it.
I hope that these work. We need more public washrooms – especially when travelling long distances in Transit. Only 4 stalls but I guess it’s a start
Great investment for transit riders that have to travel long distances. I hope everything works out,as they need more public washrooms
Glad to see 1 more washroom. It’s shocking to me that this is basically the first one on the entire Skytrain system – I’m not counting the SeaBus ones. I have been in many train stations in many places and Vancouver is the only place with no bathrooms. Everyone needs a bathroom!
Cleveland, Seattle and Minneapolis don’t have washrooms.
so no thought to the obvious security of cameras left in stalls
nor privacy
I think this will create more problems than it solves. Single sex bathrooms are needed
Will the attendants get hazard pay for cleaning up the blood and picking up the used syringes?
Nice! Each sky train station should have washrooms.
The Seabus washroom isn’t very convenient for travellers going between Expo line and Canda Line.
When Waterfront station was the C.P.R. station, there was a washroom on the main floor along the east corridor. I remember using it. What became of it? Does the plumbing still survive, enabling it to be restored?
Only a matter of time before the filthy junkies ruin it for the rest of us.
When will you build a new bridge from metrotown station to the mall?
I don’t like the artwork. Too many stalls need high maintenance. Wheelchair needs more room.
it’s ugly
The purpose of the artwork is to conceal any stains of poop and blood that will most likely be thrown on those walls in less than a week. It’s not art. It’s camouflage.
Very good
This is wonderful! No more having to try and find a washroom in a mall, hotel, or in desperate times, an alley or Gatorade bottle…I mean, stadium pal!
Not having to provide toilet paper in public restrooms would save Translink more money that could potentially be put into investing for more restroom locations. This is already the norm for world class cities in Asia where small packs of tissues are sold at convenience stores.
On this note, I think I’m now adding gloves along with my masking. 😖
Why don’t you just stay home and never go outside ever again?
Oh no!
For safety reasons, I prefer a female washroom and a male washroom they be separate. It’s safer, especially at the skytrain station, you know what I mean. 😉
This is a joke. Why do we need this at Metrotown Mall? Did the mall’s management say no to anyone who wanted to use the bathrooms in the mall? Why couldn’t Skytrain build these bathrooms in lonely areas like Edmonds, 22nd Street, Nanaimo…Or if they’re meant to be in busier stations, why not at Commercial & Broadway or Main?
The goal is to reduce reliance on businesses for public washrooms, since those often come with barriers like needing to buy something, dealing with codes, or simply finding the store closed. If you really had to go, you probably wouldn’t want to trek deep into Metropolis just to find a washroom. Metrotown was selected because of its high ridership and the feasibility of adding plumbing there.
Who design this? So the stalls are not from floor to ceiling? anyone can just peek over. and a glass wall that anyone walking by can just look in??
Would like to see a public washroom at Bridgeport too. For passengers transferring from longer bus services to SkyTrain.
That’s nice. I’d like to see a public washroom at Bridgeport too. For passengers transferring from longer bus services to SkyTrain.
Good idea. Let’s hope it works. Other cities have public washrooms and people do have emergencies when malls are closed. Glad you have an attendant but I hope Security makes routine rounds and the attendant has an emergency alarm. So sad that this is necessary but there are some scary folks out there.
I do not have an issue with universal washrooms – I have used them on planes, trains, buses, and many cities in Europe but the key to their success and feelings of personal safety and privacy is that they all have floor to ceiling walls and doors. I expect it will only be a matter of time until all of these have to be retrofitted to include these features and I wonder who designed these. Perhaps it was the same person who decided not to put turnstiles in the original skytrain/sea bus stations.
I don’t understand why washrooms are being put in at Metrotown, where there are washrooms in the mall across the street, and at the Waterfront Seabus terminal, where there are already washrooms. Why didn’t you prioritize stations that have no washrooms at all, and no businesses around the area where a person could use the washroom, such as 29th Ave. and Nanaimo stations?
In my opinion every station should it have restroom public that we can use as we need it at any time
I think Production Way-University 、Lougheed Town Centre、Gilmore、New Westminster Marine Drive sholud have one.
I think it’s a great idea however I’m concerned it will be a place for the homeless to congregate and addicts to use in.
I know there is an attendant but honestly what are they going to do if they get ignorant like so many of them do when they are told to move along and or to do their business and leave.
