Vivienne King – BCRTC President & CEO wants to answer your SkyTrain questions online and in person (Sept 7 & 8)!
Have you ever had burning questions about Metro Vancouver’s SkyTrain? How safe are SkyTrains? What exactly do SkyTrain attendants do? Why are different SkyTrains painted different colours?
Well, on Wednesday September 7th, from 12pm – 1pm, we’ll have Vivienne King, President and CEO of BCRTC, live on Reddit for an AMA! (Ask Me Anything).
Busy for lunch tomorrow? Well, maybe you wanna ask Vivienne your question in person. Vivienne will take your questions in person on Thursday September 8th, from approximately 7:30-9a.m. at Waterfront station at the entrance of SeaBus/West Coast Express and SkyTrain (just inside the fare paid zone and not far from Starbucks).
So, mark your calendars transit fans! Here is the link that will be live at noon.
Can’t make either one, but still have a question to ask? Just post your question in the comments section or on Twitter or Facebook and we’ll do our best to ask Vivienne for you! See you soon!

Hi there
I have a few questions actually:
1. How are the insides of the skytrains cleaned?
2. What if i see a liquid spill of some kind inside one of the skytrains, how do i notify someone?
3. I seen this at the canada line stations where the fire alarm is tested, does that also happen at Skytrain stations?
4. If someone holds open the door of the skytrain, what happens?
5. If someone got stuck on a skytrain in the middle of the track like away from a station, then how would they be rescued by a skytrain attendant?
6. Why are skytrains painted different colours?
7. What is Skytrain doing about people scratching the windows?
i have many more.
8. Why are some of the skytrains on the line instead of being in the OMC.
9. Are the insides only cleaned at night?
Are the questions just about the trains, or are the lines and stations included too? Such as:
How long in advance does TransLink start planning and then building ‘parts’ for new Skytrain lines before we start seeing construction happening?
How is a station built after the line is built and in operation? Is it harder to build an above or an underground station at that point?
How many of the Expo Line stations will have to be extended in the future to accommodate longer trains, and which stations are they?
Would it be possible to single track trains later at night (after 1:30am), say every 30 minutes, and not affect the track maintenance that happens overnight.
Hello President King,
I was on the SkyTrain system a few days ago riding on the Millennium Line and I was wondering why are Braid and Sapperton stations being converted to the Expo Line rather than being left as Millennium Line stations.
Hey Elfren!
We’re doing a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ prep for the opening of the Evergreen Extension. This includes some 500 signs that need to be changed out well before opening day so that there is a seamless transition for riders. They should be covered up so if you do notice any more like that at Braid, please let us know! Thanks :)
Hi Sheba,
Vivienne answered part of your question on Reddit, however here it is too: Like all transport agencies, we work with the municipalities, who have long term plans that often cover a 30-year period and are based on forward projections. A good example of when you will see construction start after the planning is complete are the various extensions to the SkyTrain system. Exactly what those periods are I don’t have them on hand.
Hi,
What is that ticking noise in some of the older trains that sounds like it’s coming from the fan above? It doesn’t seem to stop either, just continues the whole time.
Thanks.
Any chance of a post that includes the questions and answers (don’t know if the in-person at Waterfront was recorded, but everything else would already be in text) for all of us who don’t want to go hunting around online looking for it.
Hi Sheba!
We don’t have typed out questions and answers BUT! we do have the live stream you can watch here: https://www.facebook.com/Translink/videos/1251870551522206/
And the Reddit AMA with comments and answers here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/51lwzo/i_am_president_of_skytrain_one_of_the_longest/
Hope that helps!
Any idea when Vivienne will answer the questions that were posted to this blog?
Hi Raymond, questions are out and we’ll post answers as soon as we get them! Thanks!
