Buzzer illustrator interview: Julie Liu
Buzzer illustrator interview: Julie Liu
One of the things that makes each issue of the Buzzer unique is the illustration on the front cover! Each month, we have a different artist illustrate it for us and for the November 2014 issue, we reached out to Julie Liu.
She illustrated a cover for us that really captured the theme of our issue with the football fans, BC Place Stadium and the SkyTrain! We had the opportunity to do a quick interview with Julie:
How did you get into illustration?
I doodle a lot, especially in class. So my friends encouraged me to build a website to showcase my artwork and that was how Jubes Comic Blog started. It was just for fun in the beginning, but I loved it so much I just kept doing it until now. What’s your favourite thing to draw?
My characters, Ja and Ju. They represent my boyfriend (monkey) and I (rabbit), where we live out the ups and downs of life together. We try not to take life too seriously all the time. What’s your favourite colour?
Pink! I was excited when I found out the November Buzzer’s color scheme was pink.Have you ever drawn transit before this gig?
Yes, I have drawn a few weekly strips featuring Vancouver’s Transit system. You can see them on my website! What’s next for you?
Other than working part time in the health field, I have recently started a custom mug business. I hand-draw and tailor your ideas as illustrations onto ceramic mugs for people. Be sure to visit my website for details! I hope to expand this business and pursue it for many years to come. Bringing everybody’s crazy ideas to life excites me.
Thanks Julie! Were you able to pick-up the November 2014 issue of the Buzzer yet? If not, you can download it here to check out Julie’s marvellous illustration!
