The Burrard Station Escalator Replacement Project begins Oct. 17
We’re replacing the five aging escalators at Burrard Station. Work begins October 17 and is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
The escalators will be replaced with new, heavier-duty models to ensure their safe and reliable operation for years to come. These modern transit-grade escalators are much more durable and feature:
- smoother operation and braking for passenger safety
- LED step lighting for better visibility in dimly lit areas
- a variable speed option for power savings
- improved accessibility for maintenance, to minimize down time and keep passengers moving
Burrard Station will continue to operate normally throughout construction; however, it may be busier than usual.
Elevator access on all levels, as well as access to Royal Centre and Bentall Centre will not be affected by construction. Signage and SkyTrain Attendants will help direct passengers during any in-station detours, as required.
Expo Line traffic has increased exponentially since these escalators began operation more than 35 years ago.
Replacement is critical to ensure growing passenger volumes are supported today and well into the future. These are the oldest escalators on the SkyTrain system and the last original Expo Line escalators to be replaced.
Is this a rethink on closing the station altogether for a couple of years? I was not looking forward to that because #2 Macdonald bus only takes us to that station to connect to Skytrain from Kitsilano. Thanks.
Why aren’t you adding down escalators from Street to ticket vending level and from Inbound to outbound level? (and for that matter both up and down escalators on both staircases to Outbound platform. Down escalators are far more needed as the elderly fall easily on stairs compared to escalators. Adding 4 additional escalators will drastically improve flow through the station and safety.
