New escalators are coming to Commercial–Broadway Station
Changes are coming to a busy Vancouver SkyTrain station!
We’re starting work to replace four aging escalators at Commercial–Broadway Station.
SkyTrain service will not be affected as a result of this project. While the work is being done, customers may notice a bit more congestion at the station during peak hours.
These escalators have been operating for over 20 years – since Millennium Line service started – and their replacement is necessary to ensure they stay reliable for years to come.
The entire project is expected to be completed in fall 2025.
Project details
Starting December 18, work begins on the two escalators connecting the street level to the Millennium Line platform.
In fall 2024, another two escalators connecting to the Expo Line platforms will also be replaced. Alternate access to all platforms will be available via stairwells and elevators.
As part of the project, two fare gates at the E. Broadway Ave. station entrance – near the stairwell and elevator to the Expo Line platforms – have been removed from service for about a year. During this time, customers will still have station access by using additional fare gates nearby.
Customer impacts
SkyTrain staff will provide extra help when it’s needed and plenty of signs will show customers alternate access.
You can also get in-person information at the SkyTrain Assistance Counter, near the Millennium Line platforms.
In case an elevator is unexpectedly out of service, staff will be at the station to assist customers with accessibility needs to get to the nearest accessible station to continue their journey.
In addition, customers can contact Customer Information at 604-953-3333 (open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.) for more information.
New escalators
The new escalators being installed at Commercial–Broadway Station will be more durable and easier to maintain.
They will also have a variable speed option to save power and have better accessibility for maintenance to reduce downtime.
The $10.5 million project is part of the Millennium Line Escalator Replacement Project. These investments in our infrastructure help ensure the SkyTrain network is safe and well-maintained. They also support our expanding services, to keep up with the rapid population growth in our region.
I hope it is for going up AND DOWN, as a lot of people have more difficulty descending stairs than just going up.
Maybe finish some of your other escalators replacements in progress first. It’s ridiculous how long some of these are taking.
While the escalators are being replaced at Commercial-Broadway Station, taking stairs to the skytrain platform is the healthy option.
