Track maintenance near Gateway means longer waits for SkyTrain in Surrey
Track maintenance near Gateway means longer waits for SkyTrain in Surrey
Do you ride the SkyTrain in Surrey? If so, this is for you!
Starting on July 12 and until the end of August, there’s reduced service at Gateway, Surrey Central, and King George stations.
You should plan an extra 15 minutes of travel time as there will be longer waits for trains.
If you ride the train from King George Station, you will have to change trains at Surrey Central Station.
If you ride the train from Surrey Central or Gateway stations, there will be a longer wait for a train.
The longer wait is because we’re closing down one side of the tracks near Gateway Station to replace a track switch. A track switch allows trains to change tracks.
This will limit the number of trains at Gateway, Surrey Central and King George stations, leading to longer waits.
If you are travelling on the Expo Line between Waterfront and Scott Road, Braid, or Production Way–University stations, there are no changes for you. There are also no changes to Millennium Line and Canada Line service.
Trains on the Expo Line are operating:
- Waterfront to Braid
- Waterfront to Production Way–University
- Waterfront to Gateway
- Waterfront to Surrey Central
- Surrey Central to King George
You will need change trains at Surrey Central Station’s Platform 1 or 2 for King George.
All customers should check next-train screens to ensure they are boarding the correct train for their destination.
We thank you for their patience while we complete this essential maintenance works to keep SkyTrain moving smoothly and safely.
Learn more about the project
This replacement project is similar to the one we completed in summer 2023.
That project replaced the switch immediately south of Gateway Station and now we’re doing the next one south of that.
Curious how it all works? Watch this behind-the-scenes video to see what we achieved during the last replacement project and what to expect this time around.
thanks for the heads up
Why cant they do it when trains aren’t running?
why does it have to be during the daytime? just do it at night and leave the working people alone. jeez.
Weren’t these switches and whole Gateway track area had major upgrades done not long ago? A year ago?
Never mind but I would have thought both directions were all done in that same year.
I’m not an expert in this, but replacing a track switch while trains aren’t running through the night just isn’t enough time to complete the work. This requires cutting rail, which is obviously dangerous for trains, and modifying the guideway to install the automatic switch equipment. Even if this work wasn’t completed during the day, it would still require single tracking, and doing so only during the night would only prolong the work for several extra months. Be happy that TransLink is keeping the system in a state of good repair and that they care about the customer service experience. All you have to do is add an extra 15 minutes to your commute.
