TransLink’s Mark V SkyTrain enters service

Mark V SkyTrain arrives into station

It’s not every day a brand-new SkyTrain enters service. But on Thursday, July 10, 2025, transit history was made as the first Mark V SkyTrain rolled into service. We’ve been counting down to this moment, and now it’s here. Whether you’re a lifelong SkyTrain fan, or a first-time rider, this is a big milestone for all of us.

What makes the Mark V different?

The Mark V isn’t just new, it’s purpose-built for the evolving needs of our region, the people who call it home, and those who choose to visit.

As Metro Vancouver’s population continues to grow, so does the demand for fast, reliable, and comfortable transit. We’ve designed the Mark V with these needs in mind, drawing on feedback from thousands of riders during public consultations.

From the layout to the lighting, every feature has been considered with customer experience at the forefront. Whether you’re rolling on with a stroller, heading home with your bike, or simply hoping for a bit more breathing room during rush hour, this train was built for you.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate what sets this train apart:

  • 25% more capacity than current trains
  • Five-car open gangway design: walk from end to end without leaving the train
  • Wider aisles and more standing room, plus new leaning pads for comfort
  • More space for everyone: mobility aids, strollers, bikes, and luggage
  • LCD passenger info displays with next-stop and route info
  • Improved HVAC for better heating and cooling
  • “Driver’s seat” decals at each end for kids of all ages
  • New livery in TransLink blue, grey, and yellow, with hockey stick-inspired headlights

First impressions

The launch drew hundreds of transit fans, curious riders, and families to Waterfront Station. People lined up for a first look, snapped selfies, and explored every corner of the sleek new ride.

“I’m in absolute awe,” says Trevor Bodnar, one of the first riders of the Mark V train. “I had seen the testing and was incredibly curious about the interior. Now that I’ve seen it and taken a ride I’m impressed.

“Not only is the ride smoother and quieter than any other train, The wayfinding is first class, the bike storage was well needed and the front seat is back, with “controls” for the kiddos?! Finally! I can’t wait to go for a longer ride around the system.”

Whether you’ve been riding since Expo 86 or just picked up your first Compass Card, the Mark V is ready to carry you through whatever journey is next.

It’s the train that will carry students to their first day of university.

It’s the ride to first dates, big interviews, Canucks games, and concerts.

It’s where friendships spark, quiet moments happen, and the city passes by your window.

The Mark V is more than just a train. It’s where the next generation of memories will be made.

Couldn’t make it to Waterfront Station? No worries, you can watch the full replay of the launch event here and catch all the excitement.
