TransLink breaks ground on first real estate development
TransLink has broken ground on a mixed-used development project in Vancouver, a major milestone toward a new transit-oriented community and long-term revenue stream for transit services.
Located at West Broadway and Arbutus Street across from the future Arbutus SkyTrain Station, the project will bring together rental housing, commercial space, and street-level retail with easy access to transit. The development is in partnership with PCI Developments and is TransLink’s first project under its Real Estate Development Program.
Launched in 2022, the program helps TransLink find new ways to fund essential regional transit beyond fares. It uses land TransLink already owns and works with partners to create transit-oriented communities that increase housing, support the economy, and generate long-term revenue that is reinvested into transit.
Major transit agencies in places like London and Hong Kong already have similar programs and approaches.
“Some of the world’s most successful transit agencies have shown what is possible when transit development and community building go hand in hand,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn.
“We are bringing that innovative approach to Metro Vancouver by building homes and businesses around transit, while creating a new long-term revenue stream that can be reinvested into transit to really diversify how we fund the transportation system.”
That approach is coming to life at Broadway-Arbutus by connecting homes, jobs, shops, public spaces, and reliable transit.
Here’s what the mixed-use development will include:
- A 30-storey building with rental homes, commercial space, and other mixed-use space.
- Street-level retail and more than 200 rental homes, including 20 per cent below market for moderate-income households.
- Community space for the future home of Ohel Ya’akov Community Kollel, a Jewish cultural, education, and neighbourhood centre.
The project is among other major plans already shaping the future of the region, including the City of Vancouver’s Broadway Plan, Transport 2050, and Metro 2050.
As Metro Vancouver grows, the development at Broadway and Arbutus shows how land near transit can support more housing choices, more complete communities, and easier ways to get around. Construction is expected to finish in 2029.
