Each year, Earth Day (April 22) aims to encouraging and educating people to be more environmentally friendly!

TransLink works diligently in our day-to-day operations to protect our planet, and this year—just time for Earth Day—our efforts have been recognized with a placement among Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2018!

The Canada’s Greenest Employers designation, selected by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, recognizes employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. TransLink earned this distinction as an enterprise, which includes British Columbia Rapid Transit Company, Coast Mountain Bus Company and Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

Editors cited TransLink’s efforts reducing the transportation impacts of our operations and transportation in general, and an “impressive” waste diversion from landfill rate of 76 per cent.

Almost half of our fleet runs on cleaner technology with 262 electric trolley, 145 compressed natural gas and 255 hybrid-diesel buses. As part of the Mayors’ Council’s 10-Year Vision, even more clean-technology buses are arriving for fleet replacement and expansion.

We’re also currently developing a low-carbon fleet strategy, and evaluating low and zero emission vehicles to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and chart our path towards a zero-emissions fleet.

As part of this, TransLink tested a “slow-charge” battery-electric bus in 2017, and will be testing four “fast charge” buses from New Flyer Industries and Nova Bus next year. Testing will take place on the 100 22nd Street Station/Marpole Loop route with buses recharging within 4-7 minutes at each end of the route.

TransLink’s transportation demand management program, TravelSmart, works with a variety of groups, including businesses, newcomers, schools and seniors, to promote smarter travel options. This ranges from taking transit, cycling, walking to using ride sharing to get around.

A huge thanks goes out to our almost 7,000 hardworking, dedicated employees from across the enterprise for helping make this possible. They work together to not only support our customers, but to help us deliver on our environmental commitments.
