TransLink embarks on transformative SkyTrain Expansion Program
The SkyTrain network is in a period of rapid expansion with the province building Broadway Subway and Surrey Langley SkyTrain extensions. That’s why we’re getting ready with the SkyTrain Expansion Program!
What’s happening: We’re completing a multitude of infrastructure upgrades to expand the network and carry more customers. This includes:
- Adding 205 new SkyTrain cars for the Expo and Millennium Lines. The Mark V is longer and can carry 25 per cent more passengers than current trains.
- Updating the SkyTrain systems and control centres to service more and longer trains.
- Expanding maintenance and storage space for the current and future SkyTrain cars.
Catch up quick: The province is currently building extensions of the SkyTrain’s Expo and Millennium Lines.
- The Broadway Subway is an extension of the Millennium Line from VCC–Clark Station to Arbutus Street, which is currently set to open in 2026.
- The Surrey Langley SkyTrain is an extension of the Expo Line from King George Station to 203 Street in Langley, which is currently set to open in 2028.
How this affects you right now: These vital infrastructure projects will have varying impacts on customers and neighbours.
- As we work to deliver more services for the region, there will be more construction activities throughout the SkyTrain system over the next several years until 2031.
- From time to time, there will be changes to transit service to accommodate construction. We’ll communicate with you in advance.
- Stay tuned to our social media channels and sign up for Transit Alerts at translink.ca/alerts.
By the numbers:
- By 2029, we can serve about 20 per cent more customers on Expo Line and nearly 50 per cent more on Millennium Line during the busiest times of the day.

Congratulation !! for Translink
They are trying to improve and expand current services. Good Luck Translink !!!you are the best in the world certainly after Japan.
Let the users of the transit service pay fir it.
Will the station upgrades to facilitate longer Mark V trains also enable future installation of platform screen doors?
It’s a shame that the new Mark Vs are basically “standing room only” – people who have long commutes on Skytrain, which is increasingly common as users get pushed increasingly out of the core of the metro are now denied even small comforts such as sitting.
Should be fine if all those poor tired folk that sit at desks all day show some courtesy and stand for the disabled, elderly and hard working construction people.
There needs to be faster and consistent flow of skytrain cars every 3 minutes. Any longer than that and you’ll have skytrains packed without seats available by the time the skytrain arrives to certain stations. Same could be said for buses at loop exchanges.
