TransLink is introducing Compass Glasses and with them, the next evolution in fare payment technology: Tap-With-Face.

This bold new product builds on TransLink’s growing family of Compass products, including the Compass Wristband, the Compass Mini, and a series of Compass Mini-Vehicles (the Mini-Train, the Mini-Trolley, and the Mini-West Coast Express).

Available as a limited-edition product, 5,000 Compass Glasses go on sale starting at noon today. Customers are limited to two pairs of glasses each, and you’ll need to pay a $6 refundable deposit for each pair.

“Instead of keeping your Compass product in your wallet, on your keys, or on your wrist, you can now keep it right on your face,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “We’re always looking for ways to make transit payments even more convenient, and this vision felt right on the nose. Compass Glasses will reframe the landscape for transit payments worldwide.”

Compass Glasses feature:

  • Blue and orange options for Adult or Concession fare products
  • Full compatibility with Compass Readers across the transit system
  • Prescription or non-prescription lenses, so customers can see where they’re going
  • Compass Sunglasses are also available for hot, sunny, summer commutes
  • Anti-scratch lenses and durable fare-gate-friendly frames, designed for enthusiastic tapping
  • Blue-light protection for customers staring at their phones while riding

Compass Glasses are fully compatible with Compass Readers at fare gates and onboard buses. Customers simply wear the glasses and lean their face in to tap against the Compass Reader and board with ease.

TransLink is also developing the next generation of wearable fare products: Compass Contact Lenses. A pilot launch is projected for April 1, 2027.
