Douglas McLeod, P.Eng., Transportation Planning Manager, City of Surrey

By Douglas McLeod, P.Eng., Transportation Planning Manager, City of Surrey

We live in a world constantly on the move. In a city like Surrey, that means 570,000 people all moving in different ways. By 2050, that’ll be about 850,000 ways.

Our best hope for a truly sustainable transportation future is a mobility evolution.

In May, we kicked off Transport 2050, our largest ever public engagement, to ask the people of the region: what kind of transportation future do you want?

With just over two weeks to go before Phase 1 engagement ends on September 22, over 26,000 surveys and 2,000 ideas have been submitted! Not only that, our outreach team has been to nearly every corner of Metro Vancouver – including at the PNE Fair at the Transport 2050 Expo!

The clock is ticking — have you had your say? Tell us about your values, priorities, and ideas for the future before the survey closes on September 22.

What are we hearing? Read on!

#Transport2050: Modo CEO Patrick Nangle sees shared, autonomous and electric vehicles on the horizon

Patrick Nangle, Modo CEO

We’ve asked thought leaders to share their vision for the future of transportation. What do you see? Shape the future of how we move and live. Visit transport2050.ca.

By Patrick Nangle, CEO, Modo

Decongested! That’s my vision for the future of transportation in our region: great public transit complemented by the availability of tens of thousands of shared vehicles that are electric and autonomous. It’s the path to affordable, convenient, inclusive and sustainable transportation.

We live in one of the best places in the world. So attractive in fact that we expect to welcome up to a million new residents over the next two decades. That could add more than 600,000 cars to the 1.6 million already in the region. Metro Vancouver could be overwhelmed by that surge in the vehicle population. If we think traffic congestion, parking availability and pollution is already bad, we haven’t seen anything yet. Read more »

Transport 2050: Why Metro Vancouver’s youth should take part in the future of transportation

Did you know TransLink hires co-op students?

It’s true! Your friendly neighbourhood transit authority has opportunities for student interns. There’s plenty of students spending their summer helping with transportation planning, data analyst, quality assurance, maintenance and communications. I’m one of those students and I’m lucky enough to be working with the Social Media team! My work covers a range from writing articles for the Buzzer Blog, creating videos, live-streaming media events and scanning social media throughout the day. One of the projects I’m helping with is supporting the Transport 2050 campaign.

What is Transport 2050?

Have you seen our posts on social media or the dark pastel-tinted posters around your neighbourhood transit hubs with ‘Transport2050’? This is TransLink’s largest campaign to engage the community of those who live and work in Metro Vancouver on what they want public transportation to look like in thirty years. Read more »
