Experience your own ‘art on transit’ Jane’s Walk

The festivities and walking tours associated with the worldwide Jane’s Walk are over for another year, but that doesn’t mean we should stop discovering our communities!

With that in mind, we’d like to share the walk and talk that TransLink’s Debra Rolfe lead during the festival.

Below is a step-by-step guide to art found on and around the Expo Line with a few stops in Vancouver and New Westminster.

Stadium–Chinatown

Alinka Echeverría’s Precession of the Feminine

Located on the unused platform at the station, and visible from the main platform or from eastbound trains, temporary project 2017-18

This artwork is part of the Capture Photography Festival, a non-profit annual festival devoted to exhibiting local and international photography. Alinka Echeverría’s Precession of the Feminine is a series of three-dimensional simulations of ceramic vases fused with archival photographs of women and presented against vibrantly coloured backdrops. Echeverría shows her viewers the process behind the creation of these images in order to invite them to look at the unconscious beliefs we bring to viewing photographs, particularly of women. Within the transit context, this project demonstrates one of the goals of TransLink’s public art program to surprise and delight customers, with the layers of meaning in this artwork manifesting differently whether customers pass through the station only once or whether they pass through the station daily.

Main Street–Science World

The Watch Seller is a bronze sculpture of a watch seller that functions like a deconstructed public clock. Covered in 720 watch faces, the Watch Seller has every possible minute of a 12-hour analogue clock visible on his figure. He is always out of time, but he also always shows the correct time. These aspects of the artwork reference the shared history of train travel and standardized time, which were invented together in the 19th century. Indeed, standardized time was once called ‘railway time’ and public clocks are a ubiquitous feature of old railway stations. Set at the pedestrian level right outside the station entrance and across Thornton Park from Pacific Central Station, the Watch Seller is the size of a real person. It invites interaction and engagement with the station and the history of rail travel.

Commercial–Broadway

Intersections mural on Broadway and inside the south stationhouse, temporary project 2015-18

This series of murals was commissioned in order to improve the experience of the station during renovation and reduce graffiti on the construction hoardings. It was a partnership with the City of Vancouver’s Integrated Graffiti Management Program. Due to the complex nature of the construction process at this station and the expectation that we would have to move the construction hoarding around over time, we asked the artists to create a series of small murals that could be displayed together or separately. Although the artists all worked together and worked with a shared theme and colour palate, they each led on a 12×8 foot section of the mural. The mural’s name and the motif of the SkyTrain windows repeating throughout remind us of the nature of Commercial-Broadway Station as a place of meeting and of departure.

Joyce–Collingwood

Found on Vanness Avenue, outside the east station house, temporary project 2016-17

This project was a partnership with the City of Vancouver’s Integrated Graffiti Management Program and the Collingwood Neighbourhood House. The artists worked with youth who are newcomers to Canada, including Syrian refugee youth, to develop designs related to the concept of home. Individual children produced drawings that the artists then integrated into the overall design. The word ‘home’ in blue, like a river, binds the entire mural together.

New Westminster Station

The mural at New Westminster Station is a collage of archival photographs of New Westminster and elsewhere in BC overlaid with brightly coloured shapes. The flow of images in the artwork references the nearby Fraser River and, as the artist has described it, ‘the simple paradox that [the river] is an ever-changing yet constant presence’. The artwork examines the history of New Westminster and British Columbia as one in which ‘nature’ is transformed into ‘resources’ and how an economy, political power and culture develops from that process. It also brings a beautiful stream of multi-coloured light and images into the station, whereas before the view from this staircase was of the concrete wall next door.

I’ve had a tumultuous past with Jane’s Walk.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Jane Jacobs was an incredible woman who sparked a worldwide movement!

Unfortunately, my last Jane’s walk got a bit soggy.

But! I’ve put the pond behind me and I’m so excited to participate in this year’s festivities!

What is a Jane’s Walk?

The international festival is inspired by urbanist and author Jane Jacobs who believed in walkable neighbourhoods, urban literacy and cities planned by and for the people.

(She also would have been 101 years old TODAY!)JJ

The walks are free, citizen-led tours to get people telling stories about their communities, exploring their cities and connecting with neighbours.

Although Jacobs was not trained as a planner, she wrote one of the most influential books on city planning, The Death and Life of Great American Cities.

This year TransLink’s own Debra Rolfe will be leading a walk!

Debra is a planner specializing in public art in TransLink’s Facility Design Team. With a background in art history, urban design and transportation planning, she brings a multi-disciplinary approach to art on transit.

So, it’s only fitting that her walk and talk entitled “Getting Where You Want to Go, Beautifully” is exploring the art found on and around transit.

For this edition of Bus Route Buzz, we’ll learn more about Vancouver routes with added service and the regular seasonal changes for the summer that are part of the Spring Service Changes.

23 Main Street/Beach

  • We’ve increased capacity between the West End and Yaletown to reduce overcrowding.
  • The 23 will operate every 8 minutes during the AM and PM peaks.
  • All trips will travel between the West End and Main Street -Science World Station (no short trips between Yaletown and Main Street).

Detoured route

49 Metrotown Station

Due to City of Vancouver construction along SW Marine Drive between Granville and Camuson streets, we are temporarily routing the 49.

  • Travel to the nearest in-service 49 bus stops (#51018, #50641).
  • Travel up to 41st Avenue and take either the 41 Joyce Station/Crown/UBC, 43 Joyce Station/UBC or 480 UBC/Bridgeport Station.
  • This detour will continue until fall 2017.

Seasonal

9 Alma/Granville/Commercial-Broadway Station/Boundary (Seasonal)

  • Service between UBC and Broadway/Alma is discontinued and will resume in September.

Winter Service Changes began today, December 19, 2016.

Now that post-secondary schools are out for the holidays, some bus route schedules and frequencies will change to reflect the lower ridership.

School and university trips will return to normal during the first week of January.

Bus routes

25 Brentwood Station/UBC – Temporary

  • Service is adjusted to provide more consistent frequency during weekday morning peak service.

33 29th Ave Station/UBC – Temporary

  • Service is reduced to every 15 minutes during weekday peak periods.

43 Joyce Station/UBC – Temporary

  • Service is reduced to every 15 minutes.

49 Metrotown Station/Dunbar Loop/UBC – Temporary

  • Regular service is reduced to every 10 minutes; Peak service runs every 8 minutes.

Burnaby Transit Centre turns 30!

First bus
On November 3, 1986 at 4:35 a.m. bus #5101 was the very first to pass through the gates of the brand new Burnaby Transit Centre.

Who knew that 30 years later, BTC would still be such a hub for our bus fleet?!

This transit centre is made up of a north and south campus and holds fleet overhaul as well as the paint and fabric services for all of CMBC’s buses plus the sign, fare box and bus stop maintenance shops.

Some notable bus routes coming out of BTC are the ever-popular 99 B-line, 43 Joyce/UBC, 135 SFU/Burrard Station and 236 Grouse Mountain/Lonsdale Quay – just to name a few!

BTC is a highlight for I Love Transit week each year as transit ‘campers’ get to explore buses behind the scenes.

To BTC, we wish you a happy 30th birthday and thank all of hard working employees that keep it running and in turn, keep our buses running and serving the transit network!

Consultation begins for Phase One of the 10-Year Vision for Metro Vancouver Transit and Transportation

TransLink and the Mayors’ Council are looking to the future to meet the challenges of growth and congestion in our region.

Last month, the council agreed upon a proposed plan and presented Phase One of their 10-Year Vision to the public.

Now it’s your turn to weigh in!

From October 11 to 31, 2016, TransLink is inviting Metro Vancouver residents to provide feedback on the approximately $2 billion plan that would increase transit services and improve roads, cycling, and walking infrastructure across the entire region.

Phase One details

  • Increase bus service by 10% across the region, starting in early 2017, including five new B-Line express routes
  • Purchase 50 new SkyTrain cars for the Expo, Millennium and Canada Lines, plus five new West Coast Express cars and a new SeaBus
  • Increase SkyTrain service in early 2017, by providing more service during mid-day and early evening hours
  • Improve the region’s major road network
  • Improve and expand walking and cycling infrastructure across the region;
  • Improve access to transit stations and stops
  • Continue planning and design work for the Broadway subway and Surrey light rail
  • Continue investing in system maintenance and performance.

The Phase One Plan would be paid for through a fair and balanced funding formula – leveraging an initial federal contribution of $370 Million, a provincial government contribution of $246 Million and a regional contribution of $1.3 Billion.

The regional funding would be raised through a number of existing and new sources including modest increases to transit fares and Metro Vancouver residential and business property taxes.

Metro Vancouver festival season has begun!

This means events and community festivals are happening all over our fair region.

Due to some closures of streets for these events, there are some detours and re-routes for affected areas.

This weekend has a lot going on, take a look!

Vancouver Jazz FestivalJune 24 – 26

Closures: On Robson between Hornby and Howe and partially on Howe.
Routes: 005 service re-routed all day, all three days and all routes servicing Howe street after 9 p.m. are rerouted onto Richards southbound through downtown.

Greek Day –  June 26

Closures: Broadway between MacDonald and Waterloo is closed.
Routes: 009/014 re-routed, 099 re-routed.

Scotia Bank Half MarathonJune 26

Closures: The race will start at Thunderbird Stadium then via Wesbrook Mall, 16th to Sasamat then back to Marine Drive., 4th, Highbury, Pt. Grey, Cornwall, Burrard Bridge, Pacific, Beach to Stanley Park.
Routes: 002/022 MacDonald, 041 UBC, 041 Joyce, 84UBC, C19 Alma, C19 UBC, C21 Yaletown, C21 Beach, C23 Davie, C23 Main, C18 West Mall, and C20 Marine Drive

Main Street-Science World Station upgrades are now complete!

The finishing touches are all done at Main Street-Science World Station! Much has changed. With a growing region and the introduction of Compass we needed to lengthen the stationhouse and install fare gates. While we were at it, we improved accessibility, visibility and safety and added the secure bike parkade. Check out all the details in the video, when we blogged about it last and on the TransLink website.

Main Street-Science World Station isn’t the only transit property getting a facelift. Upgrades are also underway at Joyce-Collingwood, Commercial-Broadway, Metrotown and New Westminster Station. It’s all part of the Expo Upgrade Strategy.

During our April 2011 service changes, we brought back the 14 Hastings trolley route—an iconic former bus route that ran through Vancouver’s downtown for many years!

The 14—which even had a famous play named after it—makes its triumphant return to the streets due to optimization changes for the 10 and 17 trolley routes.

Summary of Phase 2 upgrades at Commercial-Broadway Station

TransLink is upgrading several existing stations and exchanges along the Expo Line in order to accommodate increasing passenger volumes, meet accessibility commitments and improve the customer experience.

Commercial-Broadway, Joyce-Collingwood, Main Street-Science World (over 80 per cent complete), Metrotown, New Westminster, Scott Road (completed) and Surrey Central have all been identified as priorities for upgrades.

Construction is beginning at Commercial-Broadway Station and we’d though we share some important details with you!

Phase 1 upgrades – completed in 2009

In 2009, TransLink completed Phase 1 upgrades to Commercial-Broadway Station identified in the Commercial–Broadway Transit Village Plan. These upgrades were aimed at improving the station, its immediate environment, and surrounding public areas.

A new entrance with new stairs and escalator was added at 10th Avenue, the north end elevator was relocated to the south end of the station, new glass walls, paving/tiling at the ground level and new retail spaces for future use were added.

This project was part of the Urban Transportation Showcase Project, a series of pilot projects completed in partnership with Transport Canada, TransLink, and local governments.

Phase 2 upgrades – starting now

Commercial-Broadway Station is the busiest station on the SkyTrain system and is a major transit hub for the region – serving 90,000 station trips and 60,000 bus trips per day.

The station currently lacks the capacity to accommodate current ridership, resulting in severe congestion, with long queues at key station “choke points” such as Platform 3, the pedestrian bridge over the Grandview Cut and the bottom of the Commercial Concourse stairs and escalators.

Construction for Phase 2 upgrades begins in the coming weeks and is expected to continue until spring 2017. Phase 2 upgrades will allow for increased capacity, and provide additional opportunities to make improvements to customer safety inside the station.

Project benefits:

  • An additional platform for Expo Line trains, a widened crossing over the Grandview Cut and a new walkway over Broadway to enable the system to expand for future customers as our region grows.
  • New elevators, stairs and up and down escalators to improve access and passenger flow for customers.
  • Updated design features to improve safety and security for all our customers.
  • Better integration with the surrounding community to make it easier to connect to and from the SkyTrain system.

What can I expect? 

Our top priority is the safety of the public, passengers, employees and contractors. Due to the nature of construction activity, we recognize there will be impacts to the public, including noise, traffic impacts and changes to SkyTrain service and station access.

Below is a summary of the key project phases and expected impacts. Please note that timelines are subject to change based on construction activity.

Phase 2A: Grandview Cut Crossing – spring 2015-spring 2017

The first phase of construction will begin with two distinct project sites: the Broadway east stationhouse and within the Grandview Cut where construction crews will focus on building the new Grandview Cut crossing. Upgrades will also be underway to the west staircase, behind the elevator.

Impacts:

  • Existing pedestrian overpass over the Grandview cut will be narrowed.
  • The west staircase will be closed for a portion of the construction period.

Phase 2B: Broadway Platform – spring 2015-spring 2017

While Phase 1A works are underway, a new platform will be constructed to the east of the existing Broadway guideway. Construction work will focus on building the new platform, including hoop trusses and roof mesh. Access to all station entrances, stairs, escalators and elevators will remain open during construction.

Impacts:

  • Platform widths will be reduced in some areas to allow for construction hoarding.
  • Passengers can expect minor SkyTrain service adjustments.
  • Noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating, is expected to begin in several weeks. Notifications will be sent in advance of particularly noisy work.

Phase 2C: Broadway Passerelle – spring 2015-summer 2016

During the second phase of construction, crews will build and install the new Broadway passerelle. The passerelle will be constructed off-site then lifted onto newly constructed columns on Broadway.

Impacts:

  • Passengers can expect minor SkyTrain and bus service adjustments.
  • Bus stops for the 99 B-Line and #9 will be temporarily relocated.
  • Drivers and pedestrians can expect temporary traffic impacts, road and sidewalk detours.
  • Neighbours can expect noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating. Notifications will be sent in advance of particularly noisy work.

As you know, we’re holding an Open House tomorrow at New Westminster Station to share details about the upgrades which are expected to start later this winter. Some of you have asked questions about the project, so we wanted to share some info here on the blog in case you can’t make it out tomorrow.

What’s happening at New Westminster Station?

TransLink is upgrading several existing stations and exchanges along the Expo Line in order to accommodate increasing passenger volumes, meet accessibility commitments and improve the customer experience. Commercial-Broadway, Joyce-Collingwood, Main Street-Science World (over 80 per cent complete), Metrotown, New Westminster, Scott Road (completed) and Surrey Central have all been identified as priorities for upgrades.

New Westminster Station is integrated into the mixed-use development beside and around the station. As the neighbourhood around the station continues to grow and develop, the station requires updates to better meet the needs of SkyTrain customers.

The project includes:

  • upgrades to existing escalators and stairs to increase capacity and improve accessibility
  • replacement of the original south elevator
  • improved station design with better lighting and visibility for a safer and improved customer experience

When is construction?

Construction at New Westminster Station is scheduled to begin in early 2015 and is expected to be complete in 2016.

Will the station be closed during construction? Will there be any major changes to SkyTrain service? 

The station will remain open during construction and SkyTrain service is expected to remain normal during peak periods.

However, access into the station will be restricted at certain times and passengers may find their travels plans disrupted while essential work is being done. There are also plans to single track trains outside of peak periods, creating longer wait times for SkyTrain. Service disruptions will not coincide with special events.

Will construction work require any road closures? 

There may be minor impacts to traffic during construction. Any road or sidewalk detours will be communicated well in advance.

Will there be construction work at night? 

Nighttime work with varying levels of noise is required while trains are not operating. It is necessary to perform this work at night to ensure the safety of SkyTrain passengers and contractors. TransLink’s contractor will make significant efforts to minimize the impact of this construction on the public. Notification of construction work at night will be provided to directly impacted citizens well in advance of the night construction beginning.

Allowing construction work at night also helps ensure the project progresses as scheduled while avoiding a full station shut down – something we want to avoid.

SkyTrain Station Upgrades Project

Wondering why Main Street–Science World Station and Scott Road Station are under construction right now? Well, TransLink is upgrading seven key SkyTrain stations and exchanges to ensure the rapid transit system will meet the needs of passengers and the region for years to come.

The upgrades are happening at stations along the Expo Line, and while the stations were considered state of the art when the system officially launched in January 1986 (and subsequent extensions in 1987/88 and 1995/1996), the time has come for necessary upgrades. These upgrades will allow for enhanced accessibility including new or improved escalators and elevators, increased safety and security measures, and greater platform capacity.

What stations are being upgraded? 

The following seven SkyTrain stations along the Expo Line will be upgraded:

  • Main Street–Science World
  • Commercial–Broadway (Phase 2 Upgrades)
  • Joyce–Collingwood
  • Metrotown
  • New Westminster
  • Scott Road
  • Surrey Central and Bus Exchange

What to expect 

TransLink’s number one priority is the safety of the public, passengers, employees, and contractors and we’ll do everything we can to minimize the impact of construction to passengers.

Construction work is underway at Main Street–Science World and almost complete at Scott Road Station. SkyTrain service will operate normally during construction at Main Street–Science World with the exception of early 2014 to summer 2014 when SkyTrain will operate shuttle train service to Main Street–Science World Station. During this time, two–car trains will provide service to/ from Main Street–Science World Station via Waterfront and Commercial–Broadway Stations.

Construction is expected to begin at New Westminster Station, Commercial–Broadway Station and Metrotown Station later on this year. Work at Joyce–Collingwood stations is scheduled to begin in 2015 and Surrey–Central is still in the planning phase. Work will be complete at all seven stations by the end of 2016.

Santa to keep steering the sleigh…er, bus

Santa, Mrs Claus, Sparky the elf and the Reindeer Bus!

It’s that time of the year for candy canes, ginger bread houses and Santa Claus. Speaking of the jolly old elf, he’s been the subject of some media attention of late. Santa shows up on a number of routes including the #27 Kootenay Loop/Joyce Station run which sparked media coverage.

Just to be clear, we love Santa, we love the holidays and we love our riders! We’ve heard about your love of seeing Santa on this route and we would like to let our riders and the public know that we will continue to allow our bus operator to wear his Santa suit while on duty. We recognize that we underestimated how much our riders valued his holiday spirit and it was certainly never our intent to offend the public.

Where can you see holiday cheer on the transit system?

The Reindeer Bus and Community Shuttle (November 2013 – January 2014)

The Reindeer Bus has been driving various routes across Metro Vancouver since November. Recently, the bus made a public appearance at the Christmas Wish Breakfast, hosted by the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau at the Pan Pacific Hotel on December 11. Santa, Mrs. Claus and the bus operating elf Sparky have also periodically been visiting mystery stops this week throughout Metro Vancouver. Here’s some fun facts about the program:

  • Since 1985, Coast Mountain Bus Company annually decorates one bus and one Community Shuttle to resemble a reindeer. This year it will operate from November 12 to January 1.
  • The Reindeer Bus and Community Shuttle visit a number of holiday celebrations including local agencies likethe Canuck Place and Ronald McDonald House (December 9-12).

Toys for Tots

The Reindeer Bus and shuttle are a part of the Toys for Tots campaign. Here’s some info about the program:

  • Created in 1985 by a group of BC Transit bus drivers, Toys for Tots allows TransLink employees to donate newly unwrapped toys or money to the less fortunate.
  • Last year, Toys for Tots delivered 2,709 toys to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau with the grand total of 57,968 since the launch of the program.
  • In addition, $300 cash was contributed to the donations, totaling $42, 822.86 since 1985.
  • The entire supply of donations to be delivered to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau agencies from Monday, December 9 to Thursday, December 19.

Canada Line Blanket Drive (November 22 – November 23)

We were part of the fifth annual Drive on the Line campaign -partnership between Blanket BC Society and the Canada Line – that took place along the Canada Line on November 22 – November 23.

  • This year, the two-day blanket drive collected 8500 blankets, exceeding the last year’s record of 6200 blankets.
  • All donated items are distributed evenly to shelter programs and organizations that work directly with most vulnerable individuals and families throughout Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, and this year, Vancouver Island.

West Coast Express Santa Train (December 7 and December 14)

Now in its 17th year, this is an annual toy-drive that collects toys on behalf of the Christmas bureau, serving communities in the Northeast sector including SHARE in the Tri-Cities, the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, and the Christmas Bureau in Mission.

This year on Saturday, December 7 and December 14, riders will be able to ride the special train in return for a newly unwrapped toy.
